I have also troubles with buffeting with the original California Vintage windshield.
After a loft of research it seems that adding "Lowers" (wind deflectors) is the best option to get rid of this.
Danny (Ncdan) once did a great job with this solution:
https://wildguzzi.com/forum/index.php?topic=86847
At the moment I am not willing to drill holes in my windshield holders :azn: so I was searching for other options and found Memphis Shades Lowers.
Unfortunately nobody at Memphis Shades was able to tell me if there is a mounting kit for 45 mm forks available. :violent1:
Meanwhile I found out that there is a kit - the code number is MEM9889 it looks like this:
https://www.dragspecialties.com/products/?productId=482603&partNumber=MEM9889
Instructions: https://img.jpcycles.com/staticwebfiles/instructions/pdf/750-583.pdf
Has sombody here ever tried this?

I've never tried lower wind deflectors on my 2009 Cal-Vin but I've tried everything else :) Adjusting windshield angle didn't do anything, tried Wunderlich Wind Deflector with zero improvements, Laminar Lip turned out to be waste of money as well. In pursuit for solution I bought bigger windshield with couple 'vents' and this didn't work, slightly better but too far from being perfect:
(https://i.ibb.co/pnvMgM9/20180315-144903.jpg) (https://ibb.co/pnvMgM9)
With the windshield shown above I purchase H&H fairing:
(https://i.ibb.co/JkRXnh3/20171223-114557.jpg) (https://ibb.co/JkRXnh3)
but I've never tried it because I didn't like the look and the estimated cost to paint it black was $500.00 per each side. I sold the bike at the beginning of this year and new owner installed the H&H fairing despite the fact the bike is white. I have to admit it looks very good but more importantly there is no more buffeting.
(https://i.ibb.co/Xxn3dw0/Norm-Cal-Vin.jpg) (https://ibb.co/Xxn3dw0)
Based on this I believe that lower wind deflectors are the right solution and only reason I haven't tried them is the fact I didn't know such things exists :(
Buffeting is crazy problem and I hope I don't have to deal with it again. Couple months ago I purchased 2016 Eldorado, it has OEM windshield from California Touring installed and there is zero buffeting even when riding 150 - 160 kph. Now, I'm very happy I solved the buffeting problem and love the solution :)

So my big barn door 98 EV factory screen buffeting issue im having is common? sounds like a lot of people are having issues
-
For older Californias you can also get Lowers at Rifle.

@ j.r.r.: You can even buy deflectors for a Cali 1400 Touring screen

and thanks for posting your "Vintage experience". :thumb:

I had Memphis Shades And lowers on my 97 Cal and the worked great. When I removed the lowers I got a lot of wind coming up.
-
I still did not decide what to do ... like a woman
- The buffeting is annoying
- I do not like large screens or look through a screen
- I do not like the looks of vents
- I do not like the looks of deflectors/lowers
In the German Guzzi Forum someone even drives withouth the windshield
(https://i.ibb.co/KVV2s7X/p1000613wnjs4.jpg) (https://ibb.co/KVV2s7X)
Has somebody tried to reduce the size of the screen?

Jan, with the things you listed that you don’t like, they are All the things you MUST INCORPORATE to achieve a calm air space on a motorcycle. The Conclusion is a simple deduction, get use to the wind and learn to enjoy the experience.

Hi Danny,
do you think a stock screen will also work with your solution?
-
Hi Danny,
do you think a stock screen will also work with your solution?
No sir. Air will come over the stock shield and hit the top of your helmet causing buffering. You can get a shield from CLEARVIEW Shields that you can look over and still get calm air. Near the top edge of the shield will have an up turn, thus forcing the air flow higher and possibly over ones head if the shield is still high enough. I’m sorry but I can’t understand why anyone would want wind, rain, rocks and insects to strike them in the face when they could be protected by a windshield. However, not criticizing ones choice in the matter, “free will” is fair and balanced:)

A member of the German Guzzi Forum has a friend in Norway who created those:

For me this the best looking solution. The guy ist still experimenting with the setup but so far the buffeting problem is already solved.
-
They look like they will work as does the OEM from Guzzi. My first set was OEM which were much smaller than the clear ones in the picture that I fabricated from polycarbonate material (in the photo) however, the chrome Harley ones pictured here work much better and I think look better on the bike than the clear. Either way for the Calvin those should definitely help wind control.

I worked on the buffeting problem with various degrees of success for years. Rifle makes a taller/wider screen. That helped, but came up short. I tried Vetter Pop-Vents, which made a slight positive difference, but not enough. The best solution so far is a taller than stock Rifle shield that is raked down low enough for me to see a clear view of the road. This has yielded the least buffeting, and if set up carefully is pretty stable at higher speeds. It looks pretty good to my eyes...

When I had my Calvin I found that regardless of windshield heights, I still got wind, on my face and up my nose effect, until I added the fork lowers. As I posted here a couple years ago, the addition of the Harley wind deflectors ended ALL buffering and unwanted wind to the face.

Beautiful Calvin! Well done
-
I am working on this again.
So far i did not add lowers because I want to keep the original look of the CalVin.
My first idea was to shorten the windscreen (I bought an used one for testing).
This did not work at all. Wind noise and buffeting got worse.
I cut off 11 cm at the top so the shield top was approx. on the height of my neck.
Maybe this solution works for tall guys but I doubt that.
(https://i.postimg.cc/WF5S4zHP/20200617-204924.jpg) (https://postimg.cc/WF5S4zHP) (https://i.postimg.cc/0KrnKvTK/20200617-212145.jpg) (https://postimg.cc/0KrnKvTK)

Then I added the piece I cut off to my original windshield:
(https://i.postimg.cc/njxBtxVf/20200618-205715.jpg) (https://postimg.cc/njxBtxVf) (https://i.postimg.cc/1gwwTXQK/20200618-212143.jpg) (https://postimg.cc/1gwwTXQK)
(https://i.postimg.cc/Bjd2MDd6/20200618-212149.jpg) (https://postimg.cc/Bjd2MDd6) (https://i.postimg.cc/hfZLQNsV/20200618-212203.jpg) (https://postimg.cc/hfZLQNsV)
I adjusted the height (+3,5 cm) so that it was still possible for me to look over the shield.
Result: Better than the original windshield.
The easiest solution is to bring the original shield in the most upright position.
I had to cut off a bit of the shield above the headlight and I had to enlarge the upper holes of the holders (12,5 instead of 11,5 mm)

With this procedure I have no buffeting up to 120 Km/h.
You still have wind noise but a bit less than before.
Next step: Homemade Laminar Lip

I had a National Cycle Plexi Faring 3 on my EV. It was great. Unfortunately it was dropped by the tech working on it and broke in two. And to make it worse, National Cycle didn't offer a replacement for my EV. So I got one the didn't quite fit but was able to bend it and force it on but unfortunately a few months later I dropped that one and broke it myself when I was cleaning it.
So I got a Plexi Fairing 2 which has no lower section and it was awful. I've compensated by repositioning the fairing until it's acceptable but no where near as good as the original. I've also considered adding some lower deflectors to determine if it will eliminate buffeting.
I think if I were do it again, I'd purchase a Plexi Fairing 3 and take a hacksaw and hairdryer to it and make it fit better.
But don't let it fall from your bench or drop it.

Hey All,
Fascinating reading and very timely. I just bought an '03 EV touring and I know going in that the fairing is horrible and had pretty much planned on replacing it with an H&H, and, as but ugly as they are, they work. Now I'm seriously wondering if lower deflectors might allow me to work with the stock fairing. Maybe the combination of Vetter vents or a vent cut in the lower portion of the shield like Cal Sci uses to reduce back pressure, and some lowers like Dan showed us (Thanks Dan!) would solve the problem, I know this is a Cal Vin thread but anyone here have experience with the EV touring as well?
Thanks,
Steve M

I really don't see it as a big problem, I'm probably not going to ride the Iron Butt on the thing. That motor in the twisties in 3rd gear is so fun, buffeting never crosses my mind :thumb:

Steve, I had an 03 EV, great bike. I did a mess of research until I was able to fit a plexifairing 3 on my EV and it worked great, offering maximum air and element control. The fairing that fit mine was for a Honda shadow 750. I can’t remember which size clamps it took to fit the forks but plexifairing worked with me until we got it right.
-
I tried trimming the one on my 03 a couple of times added vents, adjusted thr angle, nothing worked.
In frustration I took it off and left it off. Looks a lot better too. Just take it off and throw it away

Look at the 110% propsal. I think the different shape (radius at the top) could cure this problem.
In the US windshield are quite popular on touring bikes. There must be a solution.
I think Danny (NcDan) found it but I do not want to look through a shield.

Did you have to do any cutting or reshaping on the windshield itself or only to get the right positioned mounts?
Attachments are hose clamps that will fit most fork tubes and clamps on the handle bars.
-
I put a California Sport windscreen on my CalVin (on my 04 EVT as well). Make sure you leave two finger widths between the top of the headlight and the bottom of the screen to allow air to flow under the screen. Without this gap the air being sucked into the vacuum left by the windshield pushes the rider's helmet around.
I had zero issues with buffeting with the Sport windscreen on either machine.
YMMV but it worked for me.

No mods needed. Most bikes with round headlights the same windshield will fit regardless of brand, year or make. The shield is attached to the handle bars with brackets and same with the mounts on the forks.

Swanee Aerofoil. Ugly as a sh!t sandwich, works marvelously.
-
I did acknowledge in my post that the H&H, is "butt ugly", but, SHIT Sandwich??? I've ridden behind one of those fairings and I guess I should appreciate the decline in my sensory perception as I age. I would say that it would be nice if "form following function" could have come out a little, no, a lot, more aesthetically pleasing. We shouldn't hold our breath though (pun intended).

It wasn't a California Sport windshield, it was a California - Sport Windshield. I bought it 'used' off fleabay and had always thought it was OEM Guzzi.

I use one on my red/black Cali and me thinks it looks good. to be honest if someone is wanting the most wind protection they can get on a Cali bike the Swanee or H & H from Harper's is the best! now if you are looking for that "Hog" look well.....

I spent many hours on the slab at 85+ miles an hour. The only thing that worked was this H&H fairing. If you are going to put some miles on one of these bikes, just spend the money and get it over with. I'm riding a Norge now but still miss the CalVin for long haul comfort.

Not true for my bike. The replacement PF3 didn't fit around the turn signals and other controls. I forced it on and bent the plastic. But it did work.
I decided to take it off and modify it for a better fit when I dropped it and broke in two. I replaced it with the PF2 (the next smaller one) and it buffeted terribly. I was able to reposition it and made acceptable. There is thread here about that.
If I knew the Honda Shadow model PF3 fit my bike, I would've ordered that one.
-
One thing I found out after installing the H&H fairing was that the fuel tank is too small for long distance riding.
I was never ready to stop when the low fuel light came on so an additional three gallons made 1000 mile days much more doable.
I don't push that hard anymore and I'm mostly ready to stop when the Norge is empty.

From the piece I have cutt off of my second windshield I have created my homemade "Laminar Lip".

I will test this solution next week. The 3M Duo Lock pads should stay untouched for 48h if possible.
I must admit this looks ... strange...
-
Could you make a California Sport windshield by cutting down the stocker? Harpers wants big money for theirs.
-
I am just doing this for my own stuff. I can understand why they charge much. It took me approx 2-3 hours to cut the screen and grind it.
Aren´t there other options in the US? E.g. Rifle?
-
Jan my friend, you are killing me.
I had A perfectly calm pocket of air on my Calvin With two simple add-On’s, a taller shield and a simple pair of 70.00 lowers for an 03 FLH Harley and simple to add on. Lol, you need me to hop on a boat and come fix it for you?👍😄😄
-
@ Danny  ... I just had to do all this ...it was floating around in my head for two years now.
A new (wider at the the top ) windshield and maybe lowers (I do not like the looks) are the next options.
You are always welcome.
-
I just test rode the CalVin with my "homemade Laminar Lip" yesterday. The buffeting and the wind noise is a bit less but I could not feel a difference to my test-setup with tape.

My previous '98 V11 Cali had the OEM "Barndoor" screen. As most of you already know, it is basically a big buffeting windpusher, I was never satisfied with it. I now have another '98 that is fitted with a Wixom fairing. Happy to report that it works pretty darn good, minimal buffeting and very little turbulence behind the screen.
(https://i.ibb.co/0Fb0Ltk/100-2828.jpg) (https://ibb.co/0Fb0Ltk)
It is a bit taller than I would like, but I am reluctant to possibly screw it up by cutting it down.
-
I did it ... I just testrode the "Danny Solution". :thumb:
You still have some wind noise comming from the upper part of the windshield
BUT the buffeting is now completely gone. No headshaking even at high speed.
My shield is in the most upright position and my "homemade Laminar Lip" is not mounted.
For the first time I drove the CalVin at 130-140 km/h ... nothing! :thumb:
You can even drive w/o glasses wearing an open face helmet.
You need HD OEM 58121-85B deflectors or replicas of that type.

You do realize this issue could have been fixed nearly 2 years ago, right😂😂😂
You can’t hardly even notice they are on the bike, blends in beautifully.
Glad you got her fixed. The first time I test rode mine after the installation of the HD wind deflectors I simply could not get the $#|+ eating grin off my face👍👍

What should I say ... Yes I was an idiot.
I wasn´t willing to drill the holes but I got hold of a pair of used holders as a backup and I wasn´t sure if I like the look.
I must admit that I like the look and it fits to the design of the vintage.
I have used curved stainless steal washers with neoprene rubber and nylon washers to mount the deflectors (refer to the photos).

I saw that with the rubber backed washers and that was I great idea. I had some rubber washers on hand when I mounted mine as it definitely reduces the vibration therefore reducing the chance of the shield cracking. Your end results are great, very professional looking 👍

Wind buffet - low pressure area behind the windscreen and air flowing up from the bottom of the windscreen hitting the fuel tank. Eliminate the low pressure area and redirect the lower airflow.
I made some lower wind deflectors for my Jackal that had a barn door windscreen for about ten dollars. The opening for the headlight was enlarged above the light to allow air up the back of the windscreen. The lowers directed airflow around the tank and up behind the windscreen. I could ride at 70 with my face shield open and with just enough airflow to keep me cool on a hot day. Easy and simple.

I’m not sure about the CalVin but the Plex3 for the Honda shadow fit like a string Bikini on a chubby girl on my 2004 cal EV🤣

Swanee Aerofoil. Ugly as a sh!t sandwich, works marvelously.
What Chuck said. It doesn't look all that ugly to me, but that's just my opinion.

Right sized and placed lowers can make a world of difference for any "tombstone" shield!!

I first used a large Rifle screen and after that I used a Wixom fairing. The Wixom made my CalVin the most stable at high speed.

I really like that fairing Mac!!
How does the mounting system work for it, handlebar, frame, stock mounts???

I just put the H&H fairing on my California Touring. I ordered the tall windscreen.
I'm 6'3", and maybe I need to trim that. (No sense pushing more through the
wind than I need to.) But I could read the newspaper behind it now. At 70+ there IS a moaning noise, though.
Gotta figure that out - it's mildly annoying, but not in the same league as the
buffeting. That felt like I was a human speed bag......
The only buffeting now is way down low when my feet are on the highway pegs. Everything
is fine with the stock foot boards.
Now I have to take it all off and paint the fairing to match the bike.
The Corbin seat is a big improvement over stock, too.

It wasn't a California Sport windshield, it was a California - Sport Windshield. I bought it 'used' off fleabay and had always thought it was OEM Guzzi.

I have the same one on my 02 Stone Metal, and it buffets BAD. Ive been messing around with different angles a bit, and "kinda" got it useable now. Might be just a different mix of seat/bar/rider height that makes it work better for you.

Make sure you leave two finger widths between the top of the headlight and the bottom of the screen to allow air to flow under the screen. Without this gap the air being sucked into the vacuum left by the windshield pushes the rider's helmet around.

After years of me fiddling with the stock shield in an attempt to stop the buffeting, Jim Barron at Rose Farm set me up with a California Sport Shield on the CalVin and I couldn't be happier. I get no buffeting for the speeds I typically run the bike at 45-70+ mph.
I also added Memphis Shades lowers to the fork which cut the upwind draft significantly.
This bike is my favorite goto for taking relaxed day rides.
My Norge is still my go to for any long distance touring.

I would like to chime in and say that I installed the HD / Replica's Wind Deflectors on my Calvin today. Ordered them from Lion Parts.com - a couple of days ago, and they were delivered this AM. $75.
Did not have any issues or surprises on the install.
Raining today, and have a ride planned for tomorrow. Let you know how they work, with the original windshield.
Thank You Dan

I’m sure you’ll love the calm pocket of air, it took the better part of an hour to get the grin off my face when I returned from the test ride after I installed mine.
Be mindful in that I also had the larger tourer windshield on mine also.
I helped with the design of that shield for CLEARVIEW Shields also to add the Calvin to the their models application.
