Title: Drilling holes in windscreen
Post by: Gusable on May 27, 2019, 08:58:07 AM
I’m having buffeting issues on my 98 ev.  In another thread here about helmets someone mentioned drilling hole in the big hard door screen I have.  Does anyone have a picture of said holes? I’m thinking of doing a series of like 1 inch holes right under my guzzi sticker.. thoughts?

If possible, get some spacers or standoffs and try yo move the screen away from the bike/mounting areas a bit.  Most issues are from the low pressure being created behind the screen being filled in.  The result creates a vortex and is noisy.  Controlled fill of this low pressure area goes a long way toward rider comfort.  Not to mention different helmets create different results.

I've done this on a stock windshield on a Kawasaki Concours. Helps, but doesn't eliminate the issues.  It's a bit of magic to get it right. Looking at your shield, that's gonna be a tough one.

There was a certain faring that was popularized by Frank Wedge (MGNOC) that I know alot of folks really liked on the cali's. Can't recall the name of it as I was out of the Cali business by then. (I had a windjammer on a CAL II).

Good luck!

The faring I think you are thinking about is a Swanee. The H&H from Harper's is the reproduction of the original.

Thanks for all the suggestions.  I too had a concours 1000 with a  cee baileys windscreen that the PO had drilled holes in the base and it was perfect!!  im a big believer in windscreen holes and clamp on type visors. I had a honda nc 700x that buffeted BADLY. the puig clamp on visor  totally transformed the bike!   I don't mind drilling holes in this screen as it has a crack previously that I repaired... so its not pristine    im thinking about a flat piece of lexan double sided taped to the screen top as a test.

I have that bike here in Lansdale, PA Working here for another month or so. It is amazingly nice to be behind, no buffeting or anything. At 70 you feel a slight breeze on your face. Quiet too.

Michael D cut a couple of holes in his factory windshield.   He said it helped quite a bit.

They are probably 3 inches or so in diameter and between the grips, maybe a little higher up IIRC.  I don't know if Michael follows the forum but you might PM him?  Or just experiment.

I had a similar issue with my Breva 1100.

I fixed it (to my liking) by lifting the screen 1/2" clear of the headlamp bucket.

You never know, but might work for you if you have the option

I tried several things to eliminate buffering and in the end the BEST setup was the OEM sport shield however....you might try shims on the bottom of your shield like I did once in the photo attached. You can also try to raising the shield above your headlight. Also try tilting it back or forward...perhaps a Laminar Lip might help. No one thing will work for everyone but I will say most folks trying to use a barn door shield like the one you have will get buffering.

Question: are you trying to have no air direct to your face?

Best thing is to get %100 fresh/clean air to your face.

I like short shields just big enough keep air pressure off my upper torso while leaving direct clean air to my head thus no buffering.

this is gonna sound silly but the main reason I want to keep the screen is I love the way it looks on the bike!  what gets me is manufacturers make products like this that they now is gonna buffet MOST people and they still go ahead and make it that way.  they should have done a vent slit or something, lil turn up at the top etc.  and the seats!  ricky ricardo would be goin off in heavy Spanish describing this ev seat!!!  GUZZZI!!! you gotta' lotta splaining' to do!!!! lol

I fabbed up a lexan visor that I double sided taped on. I figured out that I can shim out the top windscreen mounts about 5/8ths of an inch.  Also going to probably do a single 3 inch hole dead center above the headlight

I bought an EV last fall that has the touring fairing on it that is enormous. I am looking through the screen. I would rather look over the screen, but the air behind it now is really calm and I worry that if I tinker with it I will never again get it as happy as it is now, although I am tempted. It is a reasonable trade-off for me at this point. What creates one person's buffet is another persons quiet comfort solution.
On a Nevada that I sold I was battered behind the windscreen. A laminar lip didn't help. I tried moving the windscreen to lots of angles and heights with no success. I tried drilling a couple holes about the size of Vetter's vents on either side of the windshield. I tried a Dart Marlin. The only way I got significant improvement was to remove the windscreen altogether.
It is more art than science. You just have to play with it.

I have Victory Cross Roads that I have buffeting.  I have tried adding fork leg lowers (helped a little), then added a lower triple tree deflector (also helped a little) and now going to try a Chinese knock off of a lamar lip.   Last resort I am going to install a Goldwing style vent in the windshield above the headlight.  Don't like cutting a hole in it but want to get clean air for a peaceful ride.

I had terrible buffeting from a large "Barn Door" style windscreen on my HD Superglide, not too dissimilar from your windscreen.  I drilled a couple of holes in the screen thinking I would add some Vetter vents.  What I discovered was simply leaving the holes open solved the issue.  The holes allowed the air pressure to equalize on both sides of the screen enough to stop the majority of buffeting.  At some point prior to that, I added some fork mounted deflectors, but their effect on the buffeting was much, much less than the holes.

If you look close you can see where I drilled the holes.

Big holes work to stop buffeting but won't stop rain. Vetter solved this problem decades ago using pop vents. You can spend a lot of money on pop vents or buy them cheap from aircraft supply houses. See https://www.univair.com/categories/miscellaneous/snap-vents.html

Very clever Testarossa!
So, start with 2 and go from there? Large or small?
Attach by glue then?
Sorry, just a brand new idea for me.

I bought a California Scientific screen and they use large holes. Seems to work well.  I'd recommend looking at some of their screens for inspiration. I also bought an MRA screen for the top- which is highly adjustable.  There is some wind noise, but it really helps with buffeting on your torso.

Vetter's late-model Windjammer used two pop vents. In this photo I'd guess the vents are about three inches, assuming that's a 7-inch headlamp.

The Vetter vents didn't fix my buffeting problem unfortunately, leaving them out did.  They just didn't allow enough air through to equalize the air pressure.

Just my experience in one case.  Hope they work better for you --

I known these vetter vents have been added by members here who swears by them and I’m not questioning their assessment, That being made clear. In 1983 our 12 member motor unit utilized 1982 and 81 Honda 900CB customs with the vetter fairing as shown in the picture I offered. We all was in agreement that we Could not tell any  difference one way or another, if the vents were

Little update and a question.   I cut the hump out of my neds seat and took off the airhawk pad. That put my at eye level with the top of the barn door.  One of the best rides I’ve had on the bike!! Like 97.52% fixed! BUT the lower seating position isn’t great.  I’m acquiring a Corbin seat which will put me up higher in the turbulent air.  Should fix seat/tailbone/ergo issues but now back to buffering issues.  I’m thinking about trying a puig clip on visor.  I had one on a Honda nc700x that absolutely transformed that bike!  It would give me a “ taller “ windscreen and the two panels of airflow.  Anyone here tried a puig visor or Mra visor?

I had bad buffeting from my R100R BMW windscreen - I experimented with tapeing a piece of cardboard along the top to raise the screen height.  I expected it to maybe flap or blow off but it stayed there and showed me that an extension would work.  I then trimmed it down to find the best size and copied it in polycarbonate.  The final version is held in place with 2 plastic number plate screws - so in the event of a crash it will break off - and it has edge trim.  Been in use around 80,000 miles.
So before buying anything it may be worth experimenting with tape and cardboard.

I tried the Vetter Pop-Vents on a Rifle 22" windshield. It was a pretty good solution, too. However, I tried a 23" shield that was raised about 1" above the headlight and raked back to just under my sight line (I'm 5'11"). I look over the windshield, but the buffeting is negligible. It's the best solution yet.

I bought aviation pop vents and with the appropriate size hole saw added them to a few of my bikes.

You can go from closed, vent popped open, to removed for more air flow.

Well... I finally got a Corbin seat.  It fixes the leg ergo problems! It looks pretty good! It seems to be ok on the tailbone issue! But now my lower back is killin me. Real bad too... I do have the backrest but not tried it yet.  But this is about windscreens and not my seat lol.  It did put way up higher in the air so the turbulence is at its worst. Bikes virtually unridable.  I get to work, take off screen completely and ride home.  Not too bad... I’m digging it. Heavy winds kick in.  Tries to literally pull me off the bike BY THE HELMET!!! Worst motorcycle experience if I’ve ever had. So my lower back is shot now and I’m back to fixing issues. No screen and backrest next.  Then puig clamp on large visor set to high. Thanks for all the help.  Now I need a drink...
