Title: Replacing fork seals

I need to replace the fork seals on my Bassa and it looks straight forward. How difficult is it to pull them out of the brackets?

Taking them off is very easy.       Getting the bolt out of the bottom that holds the rod in is the tough part, at least on mine.

OK I have my forks drained. I'm looking at the seal. Upon inspection it looks good. I have cleaned the tube well with a clean room cloth. I'm wondering if I should leave well enough alone and put fresh fluid in it and put it back together.

How difficult is it to insert a new seal?

Easy, pop off wiper, remove clip, pop out seal.  You are there now, just do it.

My concern is getting it started squarely and working it into place without damaging the seal. The manual mentions using "special tool Z". I don't have this tool.

Nealwp,

I did my Metal Stone years ago.  I made the mistake of using after-market seals instead of Guzzi ones and had to redo the job a year later.

My seals are from Harper's. Failing to get them in squarely could bite me too. Did you use a tool or did you just  press them in.

Special tool consists of getting an appropriate size of piece of PVC from home depot. Been doing it this way for years without any problems.

If you pull out the tubes, I use a big socket and seat them firmly on shim & you're done. If you don't pull tubes, I have a 2' PVC tube ripped down the center that I squeeze against tube and keep outside the lip area on seal & inside the leg. They seat firmly with 1 big wack.

 :thumb:OK I pulled the seal. There is no turning back. As it turn out the vacuum attachment on my shop vac is the perfect fit for the inner rim of the seal. The old seal really did need to be pulled so I could clean everything out. There was gunk built up around the edge of the seal. It would have leaked if I put it back in service that way.

One good whack huh? I'm going for it.

That is w/syn 80w90 smeared on outside of seal and this on the lip

I use this stuff alot, it makes leaks disappear.
