Excuse me from starting an oil thread. :violent1:
It seems to me that the gearbox on my V7 Special makes quite a lot of gear noise, (high pitch whine) I don't think there is anything actually wrong.
When I did the first service I replaced the fluids with what the dealer provided.
Rear - Amsoil Severe Gear Oil SAE 75W140
Gearbox - Motul Gear 300 SAE 75W90 100% Syn
Engine - Motul 4T 7100 10W60 100% Syn
The whine seems to be coming mainly from the gearbox, I don't think it's excessive but it would be nice to quit it down a bit. Anyone have similar experience and what did you do to solve it?
The original oil I took out of the rear drive was quite dark like it had Molly additive, any thoughts on that?
Since it's under warrantee I would like to use something Guzzi approved.

I'm noticing a slight whine at certain speeds on my new V85 TT which I picked up yesterday. Weather and time restraints meant that I haven't had a chance to ride the bike very far.
There's every possibility that it will just disappear with time. Well, that's what I'm hoping.

At this stage of MG motorcycle design-build business that racket shows a total disregard for the market in which Guzzi plays. I have 4 Guzzi's. The only one that howls (like a freekin' banshee in all gears), is the 2017 7 III racer. I've always ridden with ear plugs, even on short jaunts. Today, a 260mi. round trip included a quick short scoot with others, to lunch. If anything the howl is worse than when the bike was new! (currently 6000 mi.)
When I bought the bike, from Hamlin's, I questioned Jim about the noise. He acknowledged the noise & polled the staff. 3 other staff persons agreed to the 'noise; "they all do that". "I have to listen for it". Jim offered 3 different V7 models to explore local streets. I did. They all do that. I took the bike in for 600 mi. service early, cause I was afraid something would go bang. Plus, the only way to check oil level is to drain it into a measuring container. The correct amount was on board. I'm waiting for my current Amsoil order. There will be a bottle trans. oil here soon. I've used it on my other bikes, including 3 MG. Sorry to say, but, betting on the loser, wins here.
How do you say finesse in Italian? Perhaps it means character? R3~

I have a 15 & 17 V7 and they are quiet.

Yo Roy. I have had two gearboxes now in the Breva.
The original one was quiet until at 12,500 miles it shat 5th and the shaft it runs on. Sadly, it was in the middle of a tour and the rest of the gears ran in hardening dust for over 1000 miles.
Rebuilt with new bearing, 5th gears and new shaft. Quiet until it did the same thing at the same mileage, again in the middle of a tour. :rolleyes: A different case, new bearings for the helical transfer gears and running the first four gears; amazingly still pretty quiet although 4th a bit whiney due to damage inflicted.
I imported a 2nd hand box from the States. They couldn't give the mileage as the gauges had been smashed, but from the rest of the bike they estimated 30,000 miles. The transfer gears are noisier right through the whole range, with the lower 4 gears a bit whinier. 5th is dead quiet. I have come to the conclusion that the straight cut gears have enough variation in them that sometimes they whine and sometimes they don't. Probably, a new set of bearings on the transfer gears would help in my case, but I will put about 2000 miles on it and then check the oil. If it is metallic I might do the bearings and check it out, if not I will continue to run it.
With the back end, the Breva book said to run 20ml of Moly in it. (I do, as I use dino oil in mine) Previous posters have said that for some reason the rear ends seem to leak more when using synthetic.
My view of the noise re warranty; see them and get it lodged at least. In the meantime check the gearbox oil for an iridescent tinge whenever you change it.

As Muzz said, some whine some don't.
From what I've heard, they can whine as loud as a cop's siren, and be good for years. Or be quieter, and still be a can be a sign of impending failure.
No way to tell.
My '09 V7 classic has been quiet.

Hi Roy. I don’t know about the V7lll but I have a 2013 V7 Stone. Gear box was as noisy as hell when new but everything seemed to be working ok so I did no concern myself overly with it. Now, 25000km later things seem to have settled down a bit. At least I have not found myself thinking how loud the whine is and it continues to run just fine.

Back in the early days of the V7C, I had a whistling noise from the gearbox at 17,000km, followed by a gear whine by 18,000km. Took it to a Guzzi dealer down in Melbourne - "all Guzzis whine, but your whine is excessive", and advised me to ride it home (2,000km the long way - "it won't make it any worse" & have it attended to back there. It turned out that there had been a bad batch of gearbox bearings in the 750s, and there were a number of Brevas & V7s in various shops getting the same treatment.
It's unlikely that there would be another bad batch, but you never know. Report it, and make sure they know youve done so, just in case it turns out to be serious.

I don't think the whine is that serious, you can hear it over the engine but barely, i was just hoping someone might know of a magic fluid to quiet it somewhat.
I certainly will mention it to the dealer to have it on record.

My first 2014 Norge had gear whine, but only in third gear, and only at certain throttle settings. Otherwise it was quiet. But when it was not quiet, it was irritating.

Straight cut boxes will whine.
