Title: Tell me about the bmw r1200r custom
Post by: harrytief on June 16, 2019, 07:09:18 PM
One popped up nearby just as I was thinking about getting down to a couple of bikes. Typical.
I was planning on keeping the ambo and griso 1100 but the griso tho' getting much love from me is not an all day ride for a 73 year old.
The tube type wire wheels on the bmw trouble me but look great otherwise. I've owned a 2007 r1200r and a 2004 r1100s and the griso is the better bike.
Has the 2011bmw r1200r custom advanced enough to thrill an old "f" like me but be MUCH easier on the knees. My griso already has the Knight pegs but I need more.
Thoughts?
Harry

My 2011 R1200R is the best bike I've ever owned.  I have the regular version, so alloy wheels and tubeless tires.

Relatively light weight, well-balanced, decent suspension, decent gas mileage (about 50) and range (200+), good aftermarket windshield.

My old codger knees are OK with the footpegs -- but just barely.  There are aftermarket options available to lower the pegs a bit, but then there are always attendant compromises.  For now, I'm OK with the peg position.  Other than that, the stock ergos fit me just fine.

As for thrills?  It has enough power for me (I think 110hp), and spools up quickly enough to have me banging into the rev limiter more than I'd like when passing :)   No rough spots in the rev range, though I do avoid any rpms below 3 to 3.5K.  Handles well enough for me.

For me it pairs nicely with my '75 T3.  Two roadsters with vastly different characters that keep me a happy camper.

Best,

Carlo

I test rode one of those before I bought the Griso. Farely light I think about 210kg. I'm only 5'7'' so fitted me ok, comfortable ride position, but for a 1200 it seemed to run out of go real quick and like a lot of BMW's sounded like it was powered by a thousand tweety birds.

I have a 2014 R1200R with the 4V DOHC motor. Wonderful machine. Better in every way than my 1200S or my 2V G11.  Plenty of low down power, shift points seem just right, weight centered low- does not feel top heavy. I did the valve adjustment (actually, valve check- they were perfect) in no time flat. My bike came with an Akrapovic slip on and sounds just fine.

It’s a BMW, comes with all the baggage.   I wouldn’t want one.
