Title: Gasket scrapers.
Post by: pete roper on June 20, 2019, 05:01:31 PM
In another thread recently I was extolling the virtues of my Toyota scraper and promised a pic. Well things got busy and then I had to go in for a cardio angiogram and forgot about it BUT.....

Now I have no idea why it's so good, it doesn't look like anything special but it really works like a charm and is easy to keep an edge on. I thought it had a part number on it but alas no.

It be a joke ... it even says "Toyota" on it, and I'm pretty sure they don't run mushroom farms in addition to cars and heavy industrial equipment!

I'm not so sure, it may be part of the Toyota Robotic Pizza Pickup.

The Japs still know how to make seriously good knives and saws....and scrapers too by the look of it. It would seem like craftsmanship is still highly rated and recompensed  over there.

Looks like a nice tool. I just saw this on Amazon.  Carbide tip means it's durable, but certainly could nick an aluminum gasket face. It looks like your Toyota scraper must be a 400 stainless- which would make it easier to sharpen.

Wait... Angiogram? Hoping it didn't reveal any major problems.

Wait... Angiogram? Hoping it didn't reveal any major problems.

It revealed a whole load of shit but the good news is it wasn't as bad as I thought it would be.

Whether my cardiologist agrees is obviously a matter of doubtful conjecture.

The one 'Golden Thread' that runs through my interactions with anybody involved in medicine is that I'm a fat bastard who lives a life of 'High living and low thinking'. Consensus is I should try to do something about that!

I'm trying.... in more ways than one. Jude's in the UK and Ireland for three weeks though so it's hard for me to try and be sensible......

Soft metals like aluminum or alloys I use plastic scrapers

The real big heavy duty plastic bag ties that come on big bags of carrots, beets etc,,, are great for no damage plastic scrapers,,, they also make great pots and pan scrubbers and they are free,,, guzzi content

Pete, nice tool! Hope all goes well for you!!

Tempting to find a tool like that. I have been using an Exacto wide flat tip blade for years, fit's in the large or plastic handle. Works great, but you do have to be careful, don't slip with your finger in the way, oouch!

i opted for the lithium ion version. sure its more money initially but it saves the nuisance of constantly swapping batteries while you're in the midst of a scraping project.

I received a LI powered scraper as a gift when ordering a new Turbo Encabulator for a Ford 7.3 tractor .

yeah, they're great. the newer ones have LED flashlights near the nose. This is a real boon if you working underneath a vehicle - say, scraping the accumulated crap off of of your oil pan mating surfaces.

Listen to the sawbones, Pete. Take care of you!

I used a version of this  tool countless times in the hangar. Gasket removal, separating bonded surfaces, shearing small rivets, spreading sealant, opening packages of parts. Kept sharp (you can sharpen any of the surfaces), it'll cut hose, open/close cans of paint, dig munt out of crevices.

Does yours have the built in vacuum that sucks up all the gunk ? It appears to be an option that didn't come with mine .

Oh , Pete , do what ya gotta do brother , we aren't done with ya yet

no, i didn't get that version. i tried one once and didn't like it. the hose and the electrical cable kept getting wound up around my arm. it was a nuisance. maybe i wasn't using it right.  i have heard that there is li-on version with a pouch for the swarf but it seems like that would add to much weight to the tool. as it stands now i have a micro-focal vacuum adapter for my millerweld evacuation fan unit and that seems to work pretty well.

Pete , mate , it is very timely and useful , we are merely amusing ourselves a bit . It is after very hot and humid here at the moment , we needed a distraction , not any kind of disrespect intended .

Sorry Pete for my failed attempt at humor.  Obviously a quality made piece.   It's kind of amazing how special tools like that seem to find there way into the right hands.

That Toyota scraper looks good and controllable to me.
Forefinger on the blade would give you a lot of feel for the angles of the slice.
I'm gonna make one cut down a cheap kitchen knife with a dremel then sharpen on a stone.
Thanks Pete!
