Title: FWIW: 1999 V11EV Rear Fender Bolts
Post by: n3303j on July 04, 2019, 09:41:52 PM
I'm putting new rubber on the old girl and she's on her knees to make rear tire removal a breeze.

Go to reinstall the rear tire and the fender feels a bit loose. Poke a hand inside the fender and feel an odd protrusion at top left side. Flashlight shows it to be an odd hex drive screw with a head only 2 mm thick. It's backed out about 4 mm. Look over to the corresponding area on the right side and there is nothing but a hole.

Long story short  (SCREW #03439000) the specialty bolt passes through the fender, frame and luggage rack to hold them all together. One fell out! A second one was getting ready to follow it's mate. 58K miles on the bike.

Probably this is a good item to check on occasion. (Or maybe mine is a fluke?)

I don't think the 2mm head is that important. I'd just use a regular bolt and look to see if it could ever touch the tire. I doubt it could. I did just that once..

I mentioned the 2 mm head as a point of identification. Rather small Allen hole for a fastener of its diameter so I guess extreme tightness isn't a requirement.

I faced a standard hex head high tensile bolt head to 2 mm on the lathe. Plenty enough hex head for a good open end wrench to tighten it securely.

I can't get mine loose to get the rack off to replace the shocks!!   But being 19 years old and 161,000 miles doesn't help matters!

That bolt on ea side been a PIA since Cal2 on, WTF were they thinking except cheap. Same w/cheap button head BS on shocks, soft at best. Plenty of clearance for hex.
On my LM3 not so much, specially w/160 on the back.
I was just looking at sockets for stripped allens, pricey!
