Really like the looks of the two pics on the bottom of your post. Thanks, JJ. Just looking at those 'tiddlers' gives me confidence that life can always be made simpler!

This was my first bike... at an age of about 14 years old. One exactly the same, that is to say.... Suzuki TS90J, model year 1972...

Rose coloured glasses? I don't know. That bike would do 65mph on level ground, two-up!

I have a recompiled pdf version of this following book. It is the "Bible" with regard to two strokes...

This was my first bike, age 14, that started all the two-wheeled insanity for me...1965 Yamaha YG1-K, 80cc Rotary Jet, 2-stroke, 4-speed Back in 1968, I paid $125 for an example just like the one in these photos.
This "nut & bolt" restored example below was in Ontario, CA about 7 years ago, and the guy wanted $6,000 for it.     Needless to say I passed...but it was a lovely example...black, silver, and chrome....and just like the one I had as a kid! :thumb:

Nice Yamaha!
My Suzuki was a rotary valve 90cc. Lotsa power for a 90... at least for those years.
Would NOT run on Champion plugs, despite being supposedly the right heat range. Would demand an NGK or a Nippon Denso. It simply would miss on the Champion, even when warmed up.
Nothing like the off-throttle sound of a 2 stroke.
Also, I remember the two-stroke "spooge" / smell of having gone for a ride. You could smell that oil in the exhaust - on your clothing, despite not being in the stream of the exhaust. My Suzuki had crankshaft bearing- and in-mixture oil injection. The former would obviously help with downhill sections... when the throttle is well-nigh closed but the revs are up (it would continue to properly lubricate.... at least the crankcase / bottom end). I suppose the latter would also help, as the oil pump is engine-rpm-correlated.
Lovely, simple machine.

Many, many decades ago I spent several years doing some road-racing. That is, 'closed circuit' road-racing. My factory race bike was a screaming Yamaha TZ125....but my pit bike was a Honda MB5. Pretty pricey today.
When I was in high school (60's) we could rent 80cc Yamaha street bikes from the local sporting goods store. $5 a day (with $20 deposit).

My father had a Kreidler Florette when I was a kid in the 70’s. A widow had three left over when her husband died and his dealership closed. They were brand new and had been sitting in her basement for years. My father bought two for a song, sold one that recouped his money on both and he rode it for years. They were beautiful machines.
At one point Kreidler had a ton of Grand Prix and land speed records with their small displacement bikes.

I agree that Hodaka was quite a legend. I am told that they are very high quality.
