God speed Captain America 👍

Holy crap, terrible news.
So many, including myself loved the Easyrider movie, except for the end.

Had a very brief conversation with him at the store located near Devil's Tower . Really seemed a normal bloke , no entourage , just a guy on a motorbike . RIP Mr Fonda .

Finally free, and no more hassles by "the man". I hope somebody does an image of him and Hopper together in Motorcycle Heaven. Corny, but I would buy one. RIP!

Lousy loss. Some how I figured he live way long. He was cool.

It's kinda weird , don't think I've ever actually watched Easyriders from beginning to end , just bits and pieces a few times . Really no idea what it was about other than a couple of dudes were riding choppers across the country . Maybe watching it in one chunk would be fun , any advice ? Funny , I've read about the making of the movie , there was an interesting story re it in the large book about the Art of the Motorcycle , apparently Hopper wanted nothing to do with it , and there was a problem with the money after it was finished , Hopper and Fonda basically never spoke again . Also know the movie was filmed in reverse , shooting started in New Orleans in Winter and moved West thru Spring .

That movie had a cool soundtrack and cinematography.
I'm not certain but this scene looks like it was filmed around the San Francisco Peaks near Flagstaff.

Yep. You're correct.

I've always loved it when he throws his watch away. And people post here about the best way to attach a satnav or charge a phone!

Certainly some of it was Monument Valley. It's one of my favourite places on earth. At least the bits I've been lucky enough to see.

i watched the movie when it was new and saw it again a few years ago.... Not all that impressive, probably just me..

It’s actually weak as piss, but some of us are reminded of simpler times by watching it.
In the same vein.
We had a horrible movie called Stone, here in Oz in the early seventies. It coincided with the Australian release of the Kawasaki Z900 more or less and I was physically and some say noticeably aroused by it at the time.
Watching it now reminds me of some of Linda Lovelace’s acting in THAT movie, the acting is no better and plot wise, her offering was superior.
But both were good at the time and struck a chord...
However, like meeting your first girlfriend or riding one of your early bikes again (if you’ll accept the metaphor), some things are better left in the past.
I’m reminded of this when I get off my Norge and take the Mk 2 out..

Jane Fonda told Variety that she was “very sad” about the death of her younger brother.
“He was my sweet-hearted baby brother. The talker of the family. I have had beautiful alone time with him these last days. He went out laughing,” she said.
-
Good call regarding the soundtrack- like another character in the movie, Steppenwolf left their mark with some of the most memorable music associated with the open road and motorcycle travel. I know after watching Easy Rider in the early nineties, all I wanted to do was escape the burbs of the Jersey Shore, explore, and create some "heavy metal thunder". Tool at hand was a 1976 KZ400.
-
Insofar as critiquing the movie. The music and vista scenes were great, perhaps inspired by Hopper's experience in Westerns? The dumbest scene is when those stupid hippies are throwing seeds in the rocky desert to grow food. But there was also funny stuff with the Ace Trucking Co. The best were all the Nicholson scenes, particularly the one around the campfire. Jack's break out.

Huzo,
Your post made me look up the Aussie film "Stone." It's got a mixed reception, but Quentin Tarantino is quoted as saying that he admired it, and on Rotten Tomatoes it has an audience score of 65%. Not great, but much above a bad film. Some people say that Stone is a "true" biker film, and Easy Rider was ... something softer, for Hollywood.
Idk, but I'll seek out Stone. It'll be interesting.
Getting back to Easy Rider, I saw it again a few months ago. It has value when viewed for the time it came out, and as a look on the actors' early roles. I enjoyed it, but mainly as a nostalgic trip.

Frame crabbing and watching old biker movies bring about the same question: "Why did I once enjoy this?"

Arizona, but yeah. Beautiful!

The dumbest scene is when those stupid hippies are throwing seeds in the rocky desert to grow food.
They were really doing that, at the time, in the Taos New Mexico area. Several hippie communes. The kids didn't know how hard it is to grow anything on Taos Mesa. Hopper wanted to film at Wavy Gravy's real-deal commune, but Wavy wasn't interested, so they had to improvise.

R.I.P. "Captain America"...and Godspeed...

Back in 1969, after returning home from watching the movie "Easy Rider", my buddy Mike and I, (we were 15 years old), we took the exhaust pipes off our Honda S-90's, and blasted around neighborhood, making noise, in memory of both Captain America and Billy...for what happened to them at the end of the movie!

Legend has it the original script was different than the ending that made the final cut . Remember , this was really Dennis Hopper's movie , he had control over the day to day filming and script changes . Apparently they filmed at least two separate endings , maybe more . During editing Hopper went with the death scene , mostly because he was so upset with Fonda that he decided that killing the two characters would make damn sure no sequel was possible .

Makes me think about retiring earlier than later. Sure would be nice to know the day the music dies.

Well the money you make by working a few extra years won't do you much good after the reaper knocks. I took early retirement a while back and while I've questioned it at times, we don't live a high lifestyle, so don't really miss the extra money it'd brought.
As far as the movie goes, saw it in college, most everybody watching was high, one way or another, and it was pretty cool until the end. Everybody was getting off on it, laughing and joking, until suddenly it was dead quiet. That ending was something nobody expected and really brought you down. But that's what made it the movie it was. Haven't seen it since, so no idea how I'd react now. but it certainly left an impression on me back then.

I'd like to know Hopper's alternative ending? Perhaps riding into the dawn at Key West?

Dunno , where were they headed ? Once again , haven't ever watched the movie from beginning to end , tried renting a copy some years ago and about 15 minutes in it stopped playing . Most of what I do know has come from reading about the movie , the still somewhat baffling nonsense about the bike that Fonda rode , did the first one get stolen as legend has it requiring a 2nd bike ? Who really built the 1st bike , who built the 2nd bike if it existed ? Did that sorta famous actor really own one of the bikes ? The only certain bit of info is that Hopper and Fonda had a huge falling out over the money .
One thing I did notice watching some video , the pair was riding very slow all of the time , one of you experts can probably do an analysis based on time to distance , but it looks like about 30 MPH .

Karen Black looked great in "Easy Rider," but Jack Nicholson stole the show.
-
The original bikes were built by Cliff Vaugh, a black LA biker and civil rights activist. His backstory is probably more interesting than anything in the movie. Somewhere in the Vintagent archives is his full story and his contributions to the movie.

I think in the beginning they said they were going to retire in Florida. Very middle class.
So far as the riding, after the first couple of days on the chopper, Fonda was so stiff he couldn't move.

Yeah, that guy had first hand experience riding a chopper in Ala-bam.

Honestly, if Henry hadn't been his daddy, Pete never would have had a chance in Hollyweird.
His dad was one helluva actor. Him... not so much. Sorry, but I always thought his acting was rather wooden, he always seemed to be just a guy reading a script, and that he was riding on Dennis Hoppers' talent in Easy Rider. JMHO, YMMV.
