someone, can't remember who, recommended anti seize on both sides for oil pan gaskets. I've done both dry and light coat of oil in the past. is anti seize better, worse? what's recommended?
thx

Wet.
I just dip a finger in the motor oil and dampen the gaskets.

Keep it dry, use a little grease to tack it in place. Make sure it isn't upside down.
I oiled it down once and it kept oozing.

Yup, I use a smear of grease. keeps it in place, and prevents it from welding itself to the pan/block.

I use to use oil, now I paint them with anti-seize.

Grease,
non stick, reusable

 Good point. Maybe it's not that important.

Yup !
I've done it all different ways, but after having the gasket shift out of alignment on me a couple of times; I like to put grease on the top of the gasket so it will stick into place a little bit as I line the sump cover up, and rarely, if I later drop the sump, the gasket sticks to the cover in one piece and can be reused,,,guzzi content :thumb:

I’m a grease guy. I also start the install by screwing two headless 6mm bolts into the block. This, plus the grease, holds the gasket in alignment so the pan can just be pressed on. Make the headless bolts extra long so you don’t forget to replace them before you start tightening.

this is so funny, what a cluster.

We have a winner! Great tip with the index pins, Thanks.

Grease.
It's like finger painting, so it adds a bit of fun to the project.

A film of your favorite grease on both sides and let it decide if it comes off with the pan or stays on the block. Should be reuseable for a few filter changes.
