Title: Wrench Icon reset for V9 Bobber?
Post by: John in PA on August 30, 2019, 10:53:16 AM
Helping a young friend maintain his V9 Bobber. How is reset of the wrench icon done on these, OBD menu, or GuzziDiag?  And, what is the reset code for these models?

It's done via PADS only I believe. I don't think the Guzzidiag crew have cracked it yet. There is no code or clearing it through the dash to the best of my knowledge.

Thanks, Pete. Why the heck would they make it so tough to DIY a simple thing like an oil change?  Stupid.

Well it doesn't stop you doing the work. What it does do is try and make you go to the dealer where, if they are like most here, they will charge you $150 to plug in a dongle and press three or four buttons. If you don't? If you have any warranty issues they can point at the dash and say "Look! It hasn't been maintained! Warranty denied!

Yup. Bullshit. Although you do have to realise from reading this and other boards that there are a lot of people who think they know how to maintain their vehicles who don't! Just look at the number of folks here who decide to set their valves and screw it up!

The other side to that coin is are many shops a lot better? Look at the ridiculous saga of Kev's demand sensor on his Cali 14! He's lost most of a riding season to something a handful of blokes here had diagnosed and put to bed in 2 days of posts on an obscure internet discussion board.......

A partial answer to the question of “why?” is that buyers are less resistant to this kind of manufacturer manipulation in continental Europe, where Piaggio sells most of their production.  People there don’t have space or home workshops, many live in apartments, and it is unusual for an average buyer to do his own service.  I doubt that the manufacturer realizes how deeply offensive and impractical this is for the average US buyer, Piaggio is culturally insular, and I’m not sure they would care if they did.  The aftermarket will have to fix it, I hope quickly because it’s a no-go for me in selecting a bike.

Some good points.  Coming from the auto world, I know there were more then a few "pro" shops I would not trust to change a wheel on a kids tricycle!!  And frankly I had a few tecs in the dealership I worked at that I wouldn't let check my tire pressure.!!!   But really.. in the US anyways, it comes down to the fact that Guzzi is in a bit of a bind...  If they only want dealer serviced bikes... they are largely restricting sales to people that live in a small circle around a VARY sparse dealer network. So lock people into dealer service....  but lose out in sales to 90% of the US..

Well said, and sadly, true.

Though I do 95% of my own maintenance and service, the lack of a competent, reasonably local dealer keeps me from any serious consideration of the otherwise dandy looking V85.
(That and the fact that I feel I've been an unpaid Beta tester for enough new Guzzis in  past years. I'll at least wait till enough are on the road for time to reveal the, umm,  "character" issues...)   :undecided:  :clock:

I am new the Guzzi's, I just bought an Audace a bit over a month ago, so I have a lot to learn. When does the wrench come on. I did my first service at 1,200 miles. I was on the road a lot so I got to it late. The wrench is not lit but at what intervals does it appear? I do all my own work or at least what I am capable of. Electronics is about the only area I won't go. I just don't have the capability for some reason to understand it very well. My dad was an electronic engineer and he would get so frustrated with me.

Not sure when the service icon first comes on? It might be as late as 1,500 miles but it's usually about 500 or so I thought. After the first time though it will default to 10,000 km/6,250 mile intervals from the last re-set. On the Cali series it can be re-set through the dash.

Mine came on around 925 miles (1500 km) on the V85. It's very small and unobtrusive.   You could still do your own service then just leave it until it's convenient or possible to turn it off.  That's a ridiculous reason NOT to buy a new Guzzi.

Will it be small and unobtrusive to the guy who is interested in buying the bike from you in five years, or will it be a bargaining point?  If you live 500 miles from a dealer you trust, would you make a 1000 mile round trip to avoid that discussion before selling the bike, would you bet on explaining successfully there is nothing wrong with the bike that requires a price reduction, or would you lower the price under pressure from what may the only guy who will show up with cash in hand to buy a used Guzzi?

BTW, I might just be the guy on the other end in a transaction like that, after the aftermarket fixes this issue but while a lot of current owners remain uninformed and a long way for a dealer. At that point it will be a good buying opportunity.

So I've got approximately 1500 miles on the bike now.  Service has been done, and meticulous records of that have been kept.  Would you hesitate to buy my bike TODAY just because that little wrench is lit?  Or expect a low-ball price because of the light?  I'd laugh you out the door.

Some would look at a 500 mile round trip as another opportunity for a nice ride.

Obviously the bargaining point will be nothing to do with oil changes and service, it will be the perception that the icon represents an existing fault with the bike.  No amount of talking and presentation of service records is going to erase that perceived weakness in the bike, and it will affect value.

Equally obviously, Piaggio makes the symbol a wrench, not (for example) a notification for ‘Scheduled Service’ to create exactly that perception, creating a greater need to pay them to turn the light off.

That is helpful, but inconclusive.  That linked discussion is centered on the 1400 cruisers, which as per an earlier post in this thread “can be re-set through the dash”. It is not clear to me if this applies to newer bikes, so far i understand it does not.

There is always a lot of thrashing around like this before the aftermarket works around Piaggio/BMW/Whomever’s obstruction, but hopefully in the end they will be successfully defeated.

AFAIK the option of turning off the service icon via a code has been removed from the V9's on.

When first released we were told "There is no code for the California 1400's. You need PADS to clear it." This was an outright lie. With the V9 series I don't think the dash has a code option.

I know it sounds a little dramatic, but I totally had what Tusa is saying. It may not mean jack to us as the first owner who knows the history of the bike and how it has been serviced. But to a stranger looking at a used bike it could be a huge red flag. And frankly as an owner who probably gives more care to a bike than the average dealer service dept it's a full on annoying slap in the face.

The same thing has been a pia on Jenn's Duc. I think the aftermarket has a solution now.

I'm not running a Beetle Map on the Stone or Dark, but I'd be happy to contribute to the monetary incentive to crack this code on the V7III JUST to reset the damn light after I service it

Amusing related rant. The F'rs at least let me do a key and dash button dance to reset the one on the 13' Stone. But the sad part is they couldn't even be bothered to reprogram the dash to the CORRECT MILEAGE INTERVALS between the V7C and the early 1TB Stone. So the light is truly meaningless on my 13 Stone. I can't even depend on it to track valve adjustments.

At some point the aftermarket will devise a plug-in that can turn off the wrench icon. Years ago a simple paper clip performed that function on my old mid 1980’s BMW cars. Because truthfully, next to no one will be interested in an obscure motorcycle for sale at a shop that has that dreaded wrench light lit.

A forum member? Perhaps, but in the entire motorcycle buying spectrum, that’s a tiny fraction of possible buyers.

Cars at most lots that get traded in with idiot lights ablaze often go straight to the auction. Their Trade-In price typically reflecting the lit idiot lights.

This advertisement from one of the BMW dealers in California is in current circulation. Remember, “it doesn’t get any simpler than this”:  ride in after you finish servicing your own bike, give us $20, wait no more than an hour and you’ll be on your way with your dealer non-service tax paid.

The “it doesn’t get any simpler than this” thing is hilariously Orwellian, 1984-style ‘doublethink’ given that they know, and we know, that most modern vehicles have a simple service light reset feature useable by anybody in a few seconds.

i use a Texa diag kit , ( industry standard in europe ) i can't turn off the service reset . i'm sure it will be able to , we just have to wait for warranty to expire , then it should be available to after market people.

It's such a tiny icon on the v9 dash, someone has to be pretty ocd to let it bother them.
