Hi All
Here is a pic of my V9 roamer which now looks more like a v7 carbon. I've made a lot of changes including the whole front end for a V7iii version so I could run the V7 racer wheels, replaced the frame rails for v7iii versions, fitted old rebuilt Marzocchi shocks, and a few other bits and pieces.
One other thing I would like to change are the header pipes but I can't find any aftermarket versions available. There are a few available for the v7iii. Looking up the parts the v7 and v9 share an exhaust gasket part no., so I was wondering if v7iii's might fit. Anyone know the port dimensions for the v7iii exhaust? Anyone changed out the v9 header pipes for something else? I've tried v7 Classic headers and they do not fit.

Yes mate. It's a pretty common thing now with plenty of folks having done it. I've gone a couple of steps further than most. It doesn't take a lot of effort.

Because I've changed everything else :wink: Actually I had a V7 Classic that I changed the full system on and thought it gave a bit better performance but mostly its the massive weight savings. The V9 has very heavy double lined headers. I find it easier for the bike to lose weight than me.

Fair enough, though I will say I do like the double-walled headers on our Dark... and I thought the performance of the BS (Bobber Sport) was just fine as it was. You've already addressed my cosmetic concerns. Hmmmmmm, again NICE.

That is the point Lars. This was all done with very little effort. I had a V7 classic now I have a V9 'racer', and the difference between the 2 bikes is huge. As I said, it required very little effort but maybe a hit to the wallet. In that regard I tried to be shrewd.

When the Roamer and the Bobber came out Lars I thought both of them missed the mark, sad because the base had the makings of a nice bike. To me, what Crashcraddock has done is turn an ugly bike in to a nice looking one.
I yhink that if piaggio put the new V85tt motor into a beast like Crashcraddock has done they would have a real winner.

Looks like a person could have the best of both bikes with a little effort ! :azn:

Beauty lies in the eye of the beholder. For me the V7 is a nice but very conventionally designed motorcycle, while the V9 is for me personally one of the most beautiful motorcycles MG has ever built. Just look at this breathtaking design of the fuel tank... :laugh: And also the conversion of Crashcraddock is not very convincing for me. The front with the headlight I do not find successful. :cool: Nevertheless, it is not necessary to convert a V9 into a V7 for aesthetic reasons. You can simply buy a V7 and drive it, why convert a V9? I don't know if the 3 hp and the 5 NM you get are worth it. But well, it's a nice pastime and shows what the V7 drivers really want: A V7 with more power (an not a V9 that looks like a V7).

Minor correction. I believe MG revised their "capacity" specification downward to 5.5g sometime after the first year or two. Took me a while to catch up with that one.
Nevertheless, it is not necessary to convert a V9 into a V7 for aesthetic reasons. You can simply buy a V7 and drive it, why convert a V9? I don't know if the 3 hp and the 5 NM you get are worth it.
Personal taste aside, I am the VERY HAPPY owner of two V7s (Mk1 and Mk3). This summer I rode and fell in love with a V9 BS (Bobber Sport) and I don't know what the dynos say but the difference between my V7III (the more powerful of the two) and the V9 os more significant than 3 hp/5Nm, definitely a bigger (subjective) difference to me. Hell the V9 reminded me as much of a Guzzi big block as it did a smallblock.
I would totally do this.

V-9 not only feels powerful , it is geared different. There is not a RPM counter , but : after setting the shift blinker to 4000 rpm I'm guessing 6th gear red-line would be north of 130 mph. The V-7 6th gear red-line (has RPM counter) would be about 115 mph.
Plus:
The V-9 feels more powerful in each gear.
The V-7 reminds me (power wise) of the 4 inline old 750 Honda (1976 or 77 ?) , I used to have in days gone past.
Yea , the V-9 feels a lot more powerful.. :wink: And .... I'm averaging 63.5 mpg with it (without even trying to be good) . :wink: :wink:

I don't like the V85 motor as much as I like the V9 motor.

Don't be too upset with me Lars :wink: I also think the v9 tank is gorgeous, but the reason I headed down this track is because I prefer the v7 and had most of the bits for the conversion and stumbled across a cheap V9 to put them on. I owned a V7 classic and the power difference between the 2 is huge. As Kev said the V9 is more like a big block, which makes sense considering the capacity.

Its not the colour. I want to take off the original headers as I think they look 'heavy' on the bike. Having done so on my V7 I know there is a large weight saving to be had by swapping out to single wall headers like mistral do for the V7, but its more the look, like most things I've done. Also, I've already got a pair of slip ons that work for me.

I spent the weekend ridding around with a bunch of folks on Big Harleys and Gold Wings . They were all about power take-offs and speed-up just to slow-down to speed-up again stuff.
So while ridding with them my mpg dropped to 55 ish mpg. I also highly suspect none of them were getting more than 42 mpg ish and more than likely in the 35-38 mpg neighborhood.
Keeping - up was never a problem , just the opposite might have been the case.
