Title: Waterproof Motorcycle Duffel Bags?
Post by: Cam3512 on September 05, 2019, 11:04:50 AM
Looking for a new waterproof duffel bag for the bike.  Either for use on the passenger seat, or to replace the top case on my new V85.

I prefer a top-opening one, and it would be used to take my clothes in and out of a hotel or tent.   What are you guys using, and what size?

Check out Mosko Moto.  I don't have any but saw these at a show.  Really good quality.

Hefty. Also can be used as upholstery.

Aerostich sells a variety of waterproof bags as I recall.

Thanks Harry.  I like the "Scout", but think 25L would be too small and 60L too massive.  30-40L would be just right.

Walmart use to sell a set (2) of "canoe" bags for about $12. Orange or yellow. I have the orange set; work great with large one holding my tent, sleeping bag and a lot more camp gear. Makes a great back rest also!!

My GF got me one of these for christmas. Dead simple, water proof and cheap. Included mounting straps (pictured with the brown leather seat). Used it several times without fail. Probably not quite as robust as Ortlieb or Wolfman, but a fraction of the price. If something happens to it, I'll look to replace it with the same.

Being a cheap-ass, I have a nylon duffel and keep a 30 gallon garbage bag in it just in case I get caught in a drizzle. So far, so good

I  picked this one up from Amazon over 3 years ago and it's still holding up.

Attach it to the rear seat of the Griso via ROK Straps:

I only use a large duffel when I go camping, I fit my tent a a few other thing that can't fit in my panniers.
My duffel is an inexpensive nylon not water proof, but I carry a large heavy-duty garbage bag if I get caught in a drizzle.

We've been using an Ortlieb one from Aerostich for a decade or two if you ever want to borrow it to check it out.

I've used the Ortlieb (I think they call them rack packs) for the last decade. I've found both small & medium useful sizes. And they are still going strong after serious use and abuse. There's now a lot of cheaper versions/alternatives available, some astoundingly cheap - can't see why the cheap ones shouldn't last either - popular with the canoeing/kayaking fraternity - Ortlieb have a solid rep in bicycling circles. Givi make a version (45L ?) with convenient hooks, rings & straps, works well, perhaps not quite so robust, and in a boring grey.

This is the medium Ortlieb.

I've used my Ortlieb for 25 years and it's still like new. Thousands and thousands of miles on it. I'll never have to buy another bag.

I too was interested in the Scout, here is a buddy holding the 60L.

I have Ortlieb rear roller dry bags for my bicycle. They are 35 years old and should last another 35. Great quality.

Surprised no one has mentioned Cascade Designs.
Ortlieb is a stronger/lighter product but doesn't (or didn't while I was in the business) offer a waterproof zippered duffle.
Sealine zip duffle in 40 or 78 liter sizes. The 78 fits exactly across my bike from pannier to pannier.

SW Motech 35 liter for camping or long journeys. Ortlieb 19 liter for shorter trips or off-road. Both also perform duties in my canoe. They cost more, but work well and last a long time. The 35 liter bag shown below...

An alternative lower priced (Guzzi content) source...Jannd Mountaineering.

Lots of bicycle stuff, but stuff stacks, duffle bags, etc...regular clearance sales. This is just one sample under duffle bags...lots more useful stuff....like a 3M reflective strap to hang from your gear, works like a scarecrow..reflecti ve self adhesive tape...think handy bicycle stuff

A LOT cheaper than BMW World prices, but well made for the purpose

I have used this one for two fly and rides. For the two trips I packed all my stuff and checked it on the airlines and then strapped it on the bike for the rides home. Both trips were in the 1500-2000 mile range.
I got rained on very heavily on one of the trips and moderately on the other.
My stuff stayed dry. I think the only potential leak point would be the zipper. It is covered with a flap and I made sure to have it facing back.
75 liters for $25. other sizes are available.
