One of the two best motorbike adventure books ever written , the other being Jupiter's Travels . Basic stripped down motorbike adventure , none of the celebrity nonsense surrounding some of the modern stuff .

Didn't Fulton develop the air retrieval system to save downed airman.
I think it was at the Danbury Airport in Ct. And he lived in Newtown Ct. And had his own landing strip at his house where he kept his Stinson Gullwing.

I have a 1939 Travel Book Club edition of the book, which I came across by chance in the 90s.

In mid-life he had a P-51, now restored and still flying. I think Kermit Weeks or somebody similar has it. Fulton’s story has a Wiki page:

TOMB! You may have read a post or two of mine. I lived in Newtown, CT from '72 until '84. Got to know Bob Fulton rather well.
Sleepy village when I moved there. I traveled big miles by car and was OOT a lot. PO lobby was open on Sundays. I'd collect my mail. Saw a Douglas when I walked out. I had not seen a real one b4. Fulton snuck up behind me asking If I knew what it was. We became good friends. Wonderful guy. Accomplished in many ways. We lost track of one another, 'til late one night he called. I was then living in Brookline, MA. The story doesn't end there, but for me an absolute treasure I enjoy remembering.
BTW: Women of all ages swooned over that guy w/out knowing who he is. He dressed like a well to do Brit. White hair poking out from his snap brimmed cap, mandatory white silk scarf, wool waist coat and corduroys. R3~

He must have been one tough dude because he’s wearing heavy winter gear and shorts with high boots!

iirc: There were 4 of his Airphibians (flying car). One of them is at the Smithsonian in DC. Currently not on display, but occasionally displayed at other muse'. Years ago I had a need to find it for a proposed program @ Larz Anderson auto muse`. The Airphibian was in Dallas, crated to go back to DC. I saw it up close in their DC restoration facility. A non-runner, it needed some cosmetics.
Bob, if I may?, was also a devoted HAM radio operator; carefully watching the planets weather, trying learn the best timing to bounce his signal to far away places. He had cool stories about all the things he accomplished.
He consulted for maybe 60 yrs. with various branches of the US military and Federal Gov't.
Exploring Newtown, CT w/ my son (9yrs.old), mostly by mc, we passed Fulton's home and saw the P51 and the Luscombe. I was really excited due to my service in the USAF. Meeting Fulton, as I did and expecting a long chat (British mc), I was shocked when that Duggy lit-off on the second kick. Finding out who this guy was is another story. R3~
He could land and take off his P51, along with a Stinson Reliant and Luscombe Silvaire in his back yard, grass field; mimicking earlier times in rural areas.
