Thanks for that.  I’m grateful the aviation guy’s brain drain landed here, rather than say France for instance.

Dan Aykroyd (Canadian)  did a movie about AVRO.  Not only did they prototype that flying disk, for a while they built the Arrow, the fastest jet fighter in the world IIRC- their Iroquois jet engine was considered the best fighter engine.   They got done in by the American Defense industry and sellout Canadian politicians.

OTOH, despite being a great aircraft company, how could a little country like Canada ever compete with the USA military?

Truth be known, AVRO Canada ( A. V. Roe) was a wholly owned subsidiary of Hawker Siddeley, a British company.

The Arrow is a great Canadian legend, more myth than fact, that just will not die in Canada. The project was wildly over budget by the time the conservative government came to power and Canada could not sign up any significant international sales other than a strong interest from the Belgian government. It was an advanced interceptor for the time but hardly the only one on offer. National pride aside it was the right decision to cancel the program and purchase off the shelf American designs.

Best transportation design to come out of Canada? the Ski Do of course!

The world owes Canada a huge thank you for all the air training in the second world war, Commonwealth air crews were able to train in relative safety all across Canada, there's a good museum in Brandon Manatoba.
Of course we also owe the United States for all the equipment they "loaned" us before they entered the war.

Great little museum south of Calgary

www.bombercommandmu seum.ca/

They proudly display a Lancaster, I love that plane and have crawled through it a couple times.

My wife's uncle was a side gunner in one, survived 25 missions over Germany.

The Chipmunk (DHC-1, C = Canada) was a very nice flying Canadian design (led by an expatriate Pole), hamstrung only by the parent companies insistence on using an antique boat anchor engine produced in England.  The DHC-2 Beaver was likewise a wonderful plane with a more rational engine selection.

Yeah, the Chipmunk is one of the finest flyers ever..
