A lot of us here are old, lets just face it, we are. We should eat healthy and most of the time I try to lean in that direction, as much as I can, honest I do try, ok maybe I think about going in that direction often. Of course this time of year the temptation from Holiday feasting is unbearable and that is a given. However I think nearly everyone has that one item, sweet or otherwise, that just calls your name and you just cannot resist knowing fully it fattening, loaded with useless calories, and will send the cholesterol count off the charts.
Mine is plain as simple, birthday cake, not just any old plain store bought, lard based/sugar icing cake, (although I won't walk away from those either), it has to come from my local bakery, Pauls. It is a family business that has been in town for years and it is the best damn cake I have ever tasted. The icing is so sweet it almost hurts your teeth and the cake I am sure is made by the Gods and delivered via UPS to the back door of the business. My Step-Daughter just celebrated her 46th birthday and they made the mistake of leaving half of a huge cake at my home. I finished the last piece for breakfast this morning with a hot cup of coffee much to my Wife's total disgust. I don't care, I am totally able to resist until the next birthday rolls around, unless, I think the cat was born sometime around this time of year.............

Cake is a very acceptable breakfast. Not as good as pie or cheesecake but just as admirable. Carry on!

"great cakes!" could become the next awesome.????
Sounds like you met temptation and handled it well.

Just got my blood work back from the lab. Sadly, my cholesterol numbers were staggering. A real let-down. Not bad enough that I have to watch my calorie intake, now I have to lay off the bacon and eggs. Is there no end to this sh*t? (yes, I know the answer, so don't remind me!)

I learned just this week that a lifetime of eating whatever I wanted has resulted in me having gallstones. Having my gallbladder removed next week. Oh boy! Nice Christmas present. Thanks Santa!
Getting old sure ain't for sissies!

There's different kinds of cholesterol. My grandma was skinny and active and ate right all the time, but her bad cholesterol stayed over 400 until the day she died at age 86. Fay's cholesterol is high, medication high, even though she eats right and stays in shape and exercises. Her cholesterol levels are not affected by what she eats.
Doctor had me on Simvistatin for years, until we realized that my cholesterol went up and down with my weight. When I stay below 240 pounds, my cholesterol numbers all stay in the healthy range no matter what I eat.
I had leftover rumaki for breakfast this morning (bacon, chicken livers, water chestnuts) .....

Steel cut oats are only one factor in the search for healthy old-manitude!

Bad news guys. Cholesterol numbers are total BS! They indicate nothing. Cholesterol numbers and the "resultant health effects" are based much more on genetics, than diet. True, they can be modified by diet, but most of the time, they are nothing to be concerned about.
But if you want to lower those pesky numbers, put a tablespoon of vinegar in about 4-8 ounces of water and drink that each day.
You have all heard about the Mediterranean diet, to summarize, party until you puke, just don't wimp out when it comes to the puking part!
That's my Christmas gift to all y'all. Don't ever say I never gave you nothing!

Chocolate Cake has EVERYTHING you need..... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N202TC00IHM

You really should have ice cream with that cake.
-
Cake. I am one of those that scrapes all the frosting off the top and will munch it if it isn't too sweet, gooey or fruity. I do like chocolate but please don't block the bathroom once I eat it.
White and Carrot cake are OK too. No yellow, banana or angel food please. No nuts, no fruit. A very small piece of German Choc but I'll be trottin' fast.

Pavlova is a Kiwi desert made from egg white, sugar and a layer of whipped cream, topped off with kiwi fruit slices or passion fruit, it was named in honour a famous Russian ballerina Anna Pavlova who toured the world back around WWI, its to die for.
This time of year my Wife makes Pavlova or a big bowl of Trifle soaked in sherry in a good year we get both.

Every holiday season the wife begs for my home made egg nog, I call it death in a jar.
Separate 12 eggs, beat yolks, add in 2 1/2 cups white sugar, alternately beat in a quart of good brandy and a pint o rum. Stir in 3 quarts of heavy cream. Beat egg whites until stiff, fold into another quart of heavy cream, and blend in a cup of powdered sugar. Add that to original mix and let stand in a cool place overnight.
-
That sounds like a medication of some sort.

Hey! Pat80flh. That looks like my recipe; if it weren't for a chosen amount of ginger, cinnamon, all spice or cloves.
Many years ago, young hardy, risk taker, non drinker, long haul motorcyclist/truck driver I was a bonafide member of the NYC cheese cake judging group. All 5 boroughs. A social outlet. You cannot be idle the rest of the year. Keep your skills up. R3~

Well I think I'd take that medicine!
I'm not that fond of the really high-calory stuff.
I usually eat more than I ought to when lutefisk or mutton stew is served, though.
It's hard to stop eating langoustine (nephrops norvegicus), though. And it's low-fat, protein-rich, and super tasty!

Today's "ANTI-OXIDANT" tip - - eat more Blueberries, Raspberries, and drink Pomegranate juice.

My later father's advice: "Moderation in all things consumed" - and he lived to be 93...
But the Bumper Sticker of 2019 sums it all up: "EAT HEALTHY - STAY FIT - DIE ANYWAY!!"
-
How hard is it to eat in moderation, more of the good than bad.
Much of the year, moderation isn't too hard, but THIS time of year, when traditions handed down by our grandmothers put us in positions where we are part of a festive group of 20 or so people surrounded by enough high-fat, high-calorie, high-sugar, absolutely DELICIOUS food to feed 100 people ...
... not only does 10,000 years of instinct ("LOOK! CALORIES! Eat them while you can get them, it's gonna be cold soon!") kick in, but 60 years of saying "Oh, what the hey, it's just once (well three or four times ... well, maybe 10 times) a year, I'll just enjoy myself" takes hold of you, and before you know it, moderation is out the window.
Followed by the "morning after", a grossly upset digestion, a stretched-out stomach, and a perverse GI system that craves more of what you just had, regardless of how sick and guilty you are. And then, to prevent it taking hold long term, you almost have to do violence to yourself to get back into the "Moderation Makes Me Feel Good" mode ....
It's just not fair.

Always eat of the three main food groups, Burgers, shakes, and fries.

Might have to go and search them out... I get my K serviced over at Morton’s.
Anything else of theirs I need to try?

I've always been trim and got exercise...last 20 years of eating no processed food, plently of raw veggies and meat in moderation got me my reward...A life threatening cancer...Your results may differ.....

Real men don't say, "veggies".....

Beer!
Always eat of the three main food groups, Burgers, shakes, and fries.
I try to eat chicken 3 times a week and pleant of grains everyday. Wings, livers, hearts and gizzards followed by lots of beer.
Might not live until I'm in my 80's or 90's but I not gonna be miserable eating air fryer kale and quinoa pretending its delicious and flavorful.

A 'treat was just that as a kid.
The buck starts and stops here, your liver controls your life without going into the full story, this book probably saved my life back in 2003/4.
Don't choke on that cake.

I believe it was the late, great John Belushi who once said: "The liver is a muscle...and you must exercise it!!"

Being a retired Cop I hate to say it, but try their donuts. In the area, known as the best around. Show up at any social occasion locally with a dozen Paul's Bakery donuts and you will be the hit of the party. There is one particular one they do have a surcharge on, a glazed donut covered with crumbled bacon. Kind of covers all of the food groups.......
-
There is a brewery in AL that brews a fantastic coffee chocolate beer with glazed doughnuts as an ingredient.
If you have ever tasted Sam Adams Utopia, that's what it tastes like.
Darn if I can remember the name.
That's killing a few birds with one stone.

Steamed kale isn't bad, but quinoa is awful, and I wanted to like it, too.
Quinoa, brussels sprouts, cilantro, and chitlins just taste awful to me. No way I'd eat them unless I had to eat them to stay alive.
