Well it was bound to happen. The speedometer on my 02 Stone is on the way out. The odometer has quit and the needle is jumpy. Trip still works.
Anyone have experience with GPS speedometers. Looks like a good way to go.
Thanks in advance..

Check out Speedhut, quite a few of us have gone that route
You can even get them to put the Guzzi logo on the dial
Design your own look
GPS or simple pulse sensor
You need to tell them its for a bike and they go to extra trouble sealing up the glass
DONT go for the thru the glass reset option, they have a reset button that plugs into the rear, much better way to go

OK, thanks I will check it out.
I see Amazon also has some. Anyone tried those??
Thanks

Will they give you any combination of colour, font, and match the odometer to your old speedo, if so go for it
Made in USA vs made in China
The Speedhut is based on a stepper motor the pulse input model is as accurate as you care to calibrate it, The GPS should be dead accurate but you have to find a spot for the antenna. I made a simple reed switch based pulser that fitted in the old cable drive.
Have a play with the configuration, I guarantee you will like what you see. https://www.speedhut.com
In this link I have added a filter to narrow down the option https://www.speedhut.com/gauges/
Start at the top of the filter, select Individual gauge APPLY then Speedometer Apply etc etc
You need to start with a 3-3/8 Speedo, NOT Canbus
Once you get to CUSTOMIZE then the fun starts, experiment with the dial, needle colour, font and all the other options, don't forget the Moto Guzzi Eagle You will have to ask for that.
Before you order one post your specs up here and we will check it for you.
The only problem is you will kick yourself for not ordering a Tach at the same time lol
Heres a 15 page thread on the other forum the first page has been a victim of fotobucket but further on you will see what can be achieved

Earl let me know how you fix this. Both my Ev and Mary’s Stone speedos are currently nonfunctional. We’ve been getting by with the bicycle digital fix for several years, They work but it could be better. It’s frustrating that our late 70s Yamahas still work, one would think the technology of bikes 30+ years newer would be more reliable.

www.speedhut.com +1. Based in Orem, UT. I've used them 3x. Excellent workmanship, instructions, not expensive and on time. R3~

This is my plan if [errrr when] the speedo goes on my 02 stone, I was thinking of this.. I haven't dug yet, but do they offer that size guage with a tach built in?

All good info here. I will do some looking and get back to the board.
Thanks.

Speedhut has worked great on mine for the last few years. no complaints.

I don't think so, you might have to go up to 4" for a dual Speedo & Tach but don't take my word, ask them.
https://www.speedhut.com/gauges/3-3-8-inch/Duals/?catid=f12
They do 3-3/8 dual in other simpler gauges like Temperature & Voltage. The gauges are only 1" deep so you can cut down on the depth of the enclosure.

OK, the red suspenders kicked in and I went the less expensive way and got a speedo from Amazon.
ELING Universal MPH GPS Speedometer Odometer 160MPH for Car Motorcycle Tractor Truck with Backlight 85mm 12V/24V
by ELING.
The cost was under $80. Time will tell if I made a good choice or not.
Thanks to all who responded to the post.

Earl will it fit in the original housing? And if possible include pictures of what final looks like?
-
It was stated to be a 3 3/8 diameter which should work. I will try to post some pictures when I get it in.

I can't argue with the price Speedhut would be double that.
More options though.

I Put a VDO Electronic Speedo on my '03 Stone. Initially tried the sender which drove off the tranny but that didn't work out so I ended up putting a GPS sender on.
If you go GPS, you have the option to wire it to the battery OR have it switched; I chose switched but every time you start up it takes a while for the GPS sender to find itself. If you're impatient, you may want to spend a bit more money for a GPS sender that syncs up faster - I was looking at buying the VDO sender, but that was almost as expensive as the Speedo itself; I bought my speedo from Summit for about $185, and it looked GREAT on the Stone.

Did it not work?
I went speedhut because the cable and drive on my VII Sport was prone to failing.
I figured the gearbox portion of the cable drive was pretty much bullet proof so I added a magnet to it and a reed switch to pulse the speedo, no bearings and no mechanical coupling to wear out.

It worked great with the GPS Sender, just not the Analog to Digital sender that was the first thing I tried; that thing was so big it interfered with the airbox, and I ground the case down to get it to fit and I think the heat from the grinding process toasted it.
The GPS sending unit was much more elegant so that was the end solution. I'd do it again and obviously VDO makes great instruments!

OK, got the GPS speedo installed on my Stone. The existing mount is a perfect fit so far so good.
The instructions are a bit sparse but workable. I used the remote reset button because I could not get at the button on the speedo because the faring was to close.
There were about five choices for the background color but chose the plain white in the end.
So far I only have about 80 miles on it and the only draw is that if you have Polarized glasses the screen has a rainbow effect but is still readable.
It dose take about 30 seconds to get connected on the initial start up but was ready to go as soon as I turned the key on the rest of the day.
I used the hot and ground wires for the old speedo light to energize the unit so no extra wiring was involved.
So far this has been an affordable venture but time will tell. I remain optimistic.
Finally instead of leaving the back of the speedo open to the elements I cut off Ovaltine container which is a good fit over the unit with a little trimming. I kept it in place with a dryer hose clamp. A little camo duct tape over the Ovaltine container and I'm ready to go.
The antenna is a stick in unit that is easy to install.
Hope this helps if you are considering this for your bike..

Well done Earl. After 2 broken speedo cables on my 98 EV I ride W/o one .I can tell my speed from the tach but the problem is I forget to add gas since the idiot light quit working. The good news is my fix was free .

Nice to know. Will it fit into the stock speedo "can" that the stones come with?
-
I used a VDO electronic speedo and ran a tach cable from the transmission to the pulse generator that fit under the tank on a Cal2. It worked well but in those days the gauge was not moisture resistant so for that reason it didn’t work out. The tach cable being shorter worked well and fit the transmission easily
-
I did not try the stock can for size because I did not see an easy way to attach it and it rubbed against the Swanee faring.
