Title: Daughter swears she didn't run over anything
Post by: Perazzimx14 on January 09, 2020, 04:57:58 PM
So I come home to this. Daughter went to p/u some takeout food a 1/2 mile away and when she pulled back in the driveway a few minutes later her wheel/tire were in the condition with no idea how they got this way.

Exhibit 1:

Front right wheel. Dented (notice the yellow paint at the dent) and a hole in the tire with a trail of rubber bits coming up the driveway like a trail of breadrumbs. The bits and hole were from her driving on a flat tire. Not the 1st time thats happened. Last time it was "dad I thinks somethings wrong. The whole way home from work (5 miles) the car felt funny"

For the record when I say Junior in his resting place the tires was off the bead.

Exhibit 2:

(https://i.ibb.co/HCcnstc/J3.jpg) (https://ibb.co/HCcnstc)

Rear right wheel of the same automobile. As you'll notice the same yellow paint and you can see where the tire was pushed inwards like say running over a speed bump at the speed of light or a giant pothole???

I asked several time and she denies running over anything so I guess this will remain a cold case. Fortunately $124 for a new tire and rim and she'll be on her way.

I'm glad she's fine and if I didn't love her so much I'd be mad.

done and done.  She probably isn't lying to you, just didn't notice.  Either way, it's done.

It's not like she did it on purpose.

Well having raised and still loving two daughters - I’m thinking since it’s not the first time maybe she should share in the cost of repair.  Not saying the entire bill but owning some of it....

I'd be out with a flashlight looking down the road for a curb with road rash.  Sounds more like a line my sons would use before my daughter tho..

I'm glad your daughter is OK,but come on this is the typical female response. My wife has a excuse for everything and nothing is her fault. It's in their genes lol.

Start saving up for the next incident! For sure there will be one - why should she be bothered worrying about car stuff??? She probably was more concerned about which CD to install or the text she just got. If you continually bail her out, there's no incentive to take care of the car - and that's a shame because it's people like her who run over people like us.

Sorry, but it's my feeling that if she can't take responsibility for her vehicle, she shouldn't be driving. She should ride the bus, take a taxi or ride a bicycle. Or walk.

I remember a story about the boss's wife at a place my wife worked 40 years ago. The woman drove a new Porsche and came into work one day wondering what the red oil light meant. It had been on the whole way to work. They had loads of money - just an engine.

FWIW, a friend of mine bought his wife a brand new Lincoln navigator. My buddy bragged that it was the first suv that Ford made with an MSRP of over $100K. It was one week old when he showed it to me,and all 4 wheels were severely curb rashed, and the sidewalls of some of the very low profile tires were scraped up as well.
Of course his wife stated that she never went up on a curb or  hit anything, and doesnt have a clue how it happened.

So why did it cost YOU $1900 ?

Your last two posts tell me that you and I were raised in very similar cultures.

Cultures were personal responsibility were not just a couple meaningless words.

".... and another thing.  If you ever find yourself in jail, don't call me, cause I won't know you.  If you can figure out a way to get yourself into jail, you can figure out a way to get yourself out of jail!"

I used to tell an older friend what my father told us whenever he had a tale of bailing out his daughter.  His reply was "I totally agree with your father.  But when I talked to my lawyer he said buying another car for your daughter is a lot cheaper than getting a divorce!"

Mother in law always used her cars bumpers to feel her way into parking spots.  Always swore other people were hitting her and leaving.  We were so concerned we went to the parking lots to verify the curbs and posts she had scrubbed and bumped.  Last year we were able to convince her to give up the car and use other transportation. For any kids just learning to drive, I always take them to a parking lot and bring a couple of sticks I can stand up.  I have them drive up to and next to them. They always tell me they know where the car is and they are always wrong.  They learn quickly where the car really is when the stick gets bumped.  It just takes a few tries and they will be much better at judging distances.  I also taught them when they back up they have to look back too.  Both my kids tell me I did them right by drilling the basics into them.

I like seeing the road rashes on my Volvo where my daughter learned to drive 15 years ago.

During a three point turn, she popped over a curb and hooked the support cable of the telephone pole. It took 3 hours, AAA, the power company and two work crews to get it all untangled, just to unhook the car from the cable and lift the car two feet back onto the road without having the pole fall on the car, or the line of poles fall over.

She figured it all out on her own. I was just there for moral support. Really good looking scar.

She is either lying to you or she is too ignorant to know when she has a flat tire.  Neither is good.  The lying part is something she will have to fix.  You can help fix the ignorance part (if that is the case).

In any event, the damage happened on her watch so she pays for the repair.

Unfortunately, having had 7 wives I've been exposed to way too much "helping out" even when they are in their 50"s. One wife filed for divorce because I told her sonny boy at 50 had a full set of teeth and it was time you weaned him. I told another that the only thing her kid was good for would be a poster "for retroactive abortions."

I told my daughters they could call me in the middle of the night if their man was drunk or whatever. I'd come get them and the only thing I'd say, is "thank you"

There is a line between helping and hindering. It is a tough choice that every parent and husband must make.

So here's a little more about my daughter.

When we bought the car she agreed to pay me back the $3,000 I loaned her over 24 months. At the time April 2018 she was a junior in HS working part time at a pet shop making barely over minimum wage. Part time was 30+ hours a week. The 1st month she handed me $300 and said she like to pay "junior" off faster if that was okay. 9 month later her debt was paid + she also covers her insurance payment. After junior was paid off she's continued to give me at least $300 per month to hold for her so when it comes time for a new car she'll have a nice down payment.

After she graduated HS in June of 2019 she got a full time job working 6pm to 6am as a nurses aide in a dementia unit of a local retirement home. Her job tasks include cleaning, diapering, bathing, feeding and moving patients twice her weight. She works 12 hour shifts 3 nights on 2 nights off 2 nights on 3 nights off. She works overtime when available, covers shifts when others call in sick. Did I mention she has 22 screws in her back and is about 5'-2" and skinny as a rail and has other afflictions that most people would beg to be on disability for. She loves caring for "her people" and is the least selfish person you'd ever meet. I also asked her that since she's working full time its time to start a retirement fund and asked what she'd like to contribute per month. She said would $500 be enough or should I put in more. I know adults with good paying job who think they are doing good socking away $40 per pay into retirement. Not many 19 year olds even know what retirement is.

Around home she cleans up around the house, does laundry, buys some groceries and regularly mows our lawn as well as the neighbors that his lawn is 10x as big as ours. If she uses my truck and it has less than 1/2 tank of gas she'll fill it up with her money even if she only drove 15 miles round trip to work. She has a credit card that if she uses it will immediately come home and transfer money from her savings and pay it off. She hates owing people money and has never asked me for a penny in her entire 19 years 3 weeks she's be around.

As for her paying for the damage to her car  the only reason I cannot is she would not let me.

We did talk to her about not running over motorcyclists. She said don't worry Guzzi riders are like skunks. Too fat, slow and the smell is hard to wash off!

Many tears ago my older son took my wife's car out, a cheep little Cavalier that served us well for over a decade. Next day I notice a dent on the left front fender, yellow paint, son has no idea how it got there. I asked if head anyone else in the car the other day, yes his girlfriend was the response. Yes was his response, I asked if went to the local mall, it has a yellow painted bollards along one curb line, yes again he answered, and did be back out reversing to the left, yes again, and he was looking right as he backed up, uh huh, and that's when his face dropped, .... so that was the nudge he had felt.

It wasn't the first time nor the last something had miraculously happened to the car while he was out driving.

I laugh about it now. I was not laughing at the time.

My wife drives a Fiat 500  5 speed, 2 dr; which she insisted on. She's never in the correct gear and often makes U-turns on streets too narrow that have full size, square edged curbing. It's violent & scary as a passenger. I don't buy replacement tires or wheels (cast aluminum).
100K+ miles. How that little bugger has stayed together is beyond me. It's 'Olive' in name and color. It looks and drives like new.
She complains about the poor mileage.
Try changing up more often?   R3~

I bet if she's as nice as you say, she'd never say anything like that, must be one of your old jokes.

Sounds like an outstanding young lady!  You should be proud of her.  Daughter of a Moto Guzzi rider who enjoys caring for elderly people with dementia?  That sounds like part of god's plan to me.

I wonder if one of the questions during the job interview was "What do you know about caring for people with dementia?"
Perhaps the answer than got her the job was "Well, my dad rides a Moto Guzzi..... so I'm used to dealing with some of that already!"

Proud is not the word. She is my idol!  I can only hope someday I am 1/2 the person she is! The world is a better place having her in it!

She is kinda my hero already and I don't even know her!

At that age, I like to get the young people in my life a copy of Meditations by Marcus Aurelius, the translation by Maxwell Staniforth speaks best to me.  IMSMO, the greatest how-to book for living life I have yet to come across.  Others such as As a Man Thinketh by James Allen come close.

If you ever want to get her a gift she will remember for the rest of her life, get her a consult with Patty Summers where Patty talks to one or more of her animals.  Website: psanimal.com.  It will blow her away.  Patty's book Talking with the Animals is one of the greatest chick books/animal lover books I have ever read.  She will love it.  After she reads it, I have a question for her.

You tell that little gem that she has more fans than just you.  You are absolutely right, people like her make the world a better place.  Most of us are just along for the ride.

I am always amazed what young people with excellent parents can accomplish.  She is a reflection of you and her mother, whether your collective modesty allows either of you to  admit it or not.

Best wishes to you and yours!

New wheel and tire were installed and took it for a test ride to find unsurprisingly that it was out of alignment. Instructed daughter yesterday morning not to drive Junior until he got fixed up.

In short order since the local Hyundai dealership was not open yet she took it upon herself to text the 24/7 line asking them to call her to check availability. After several hours she did not get a call so she called them back. I called her about noontime to she how she made out with Hyundai and she said they were  booked for 2 weeks so she called around to other shops and found one that could get he in the same day. Her appointment was at 1:30pm and by 2:15pm she was back on road. When I got home there was $140 waiting for me to cover the cost of her wheel & tire and she paid for the alignment when she was there.

I'm in with this. My 32 year old daughter now sits around with me and laughs at the shit she tried to lie about. She learned quick though, because for events like this, I just handed her the phone and told her to figure out how to deal with it. It the events where I fixed something, I charged her the standard shop rate of $100/hr.

To mitigate the dickhead factor, I'll acknowledge that she drove my cars on my insurance. Once she owned her own stuff, the damage magically disappeared.
