Title: Need Electrical Advice
Post by: britman on January 21, 2020, 02:35:55 PM
First I must issue an apology, I need help from an electrical genius concerning a "Japanese" motorcycle.  I am in the process of updating the entire ignition and charging system on a 1973 Honda CL450 which I have decided to keep in my small herd.  I have ordered a new rectifier/regulator combo to replace the old style set up, an electronic ignition system to say goodbye to the points and condenser, and heavy duty 5 ohm coils which is suggested by the maker of the EI system.  My dilemma is the coils arrived with no polarity listed, there is not a + or - to be found and wire leads are the screw on type so they are interchangable.  They were advertised as having polarity listed so I have emailed the supplier, but so far nothing.  I have heard varying opinions on coils being reserved with little or no effect but I damn sure don't want to take a chance of messing up a very expensive EI system.  Any suggestions or imput would be greatly appreciated.  I have also posted on the vintage Honda Twin site but so far nothing substantial, I have have heard Moto Guzzi guys are smarter anyway......

Nevermind, I heard from the vendor.  Apparently the supplier had a couple of batches where he forgot to mark polarity.  They were able to tell which post is what.....

They were able to tell me which lead was + and - , like I said I have heard different theories that it does not matter, but I am going to connect to known poles....

I did the same mod on my son's 110cc (supposed to be 50cc) mini chopper bike.

Just got really cheap Chinese made stuff off our local NZ Trademe site. 4 pole regulator/rectifier $10NZ.  Even put a new rotor and Hall effect trigger in ($22), and a new 6 segment stator ($12). The $45 new electric starter was the big bux.

Puts out a really fat spark and the battery charge is exactly right.
