Title: Stelvio octane requirements
Post by: Bisbee on February 01, 2020, 06:12:07 PM
Been watching Itchy Boots go into some remote areas. Gas is sketchy but the RE Himalayan keeps chugging along. My Stelvio NTX says premium gas. The Exxon station at the Datil , NM rally has 86 octane. I think my EV would run on peanut oil but how finicky is the NTX? Will the computer adjust accordingly so this “adventure” bike can go anywhere or will I trash the engine?

I always ran the cheapest crappy gas available and my NTX loved it.  Seriously, just see what happens when you put the 'regular' stuff in the tank.  You won't see any difference.  It is much more important to use non ethanol fuel if possible so the tank does not warp.

I think all Guzzi for at least the last 25 tears have called for 90 octane.  But I agree try it and see what happens.  However if you can get 90 plus that’s what you should use normally.

If it’s like mine it’ll ping any time you roll into the throttle with any intent. Premium grade is required.

It's hard for me to hear if the bike is starting to "complain" when wearing ear plugs and in high wind, so I carry octane booster when I travel on the bikes that call for premium. I think the price about equals out between octane booster added to regular and premium.

My traveling bikes have some required regular and some premium. The regular ones were much less stressful when in off the beaten path locations. When on a air cooled high compression bike in hot weather I can't help but think about it, along with having filled up with old premium and suffered through poor running until refilling.

My R1200GS is my only bike that recommends medium/high octane but will adjust timing if it senses any knocking, according to the owners manual. Says it will run all the way down to 78 octane, although with reduced power. I mostly just run regular 87 in it..

I own a 98 EV 1100, and a 2 valve 2007 Norge 1200,they will both ping especially in hot weather if I don't use premium fuel. But the 2012 Stelvio NTX runs beautifully on the cheapest fuel I can find.I don't know the reason why but I sure like that 8 valve engine .The fact that I dont have to be fussy about the fuel I put in it is a bonus. :thumb:
