Title: installation - heated grips 2017 Cali 1400 w/pics
Post by: DougG on February 19, 2020, 05:01:25 PM

HI ALL,                                                                                                                     2-19-20
I installed the KOSO Appolo heated grips to my 2017 Cali 1400 Tour.  Here are the steps:

     1) Remove factory grips.  I chose to remove them intact just in case they needed to be re-installed.  Remove the bar weights.  The clutch grip, I simply twisted and pulled until it came off.  The throttle grip, I used a compressor and needle inflator between the grip and the throttle tube - there was no adhesive.  It took about twenty minutes total.

     2)  Install Koso grips on handlebar.  This took some time.  The clutch grip - I used WD40 on the bar and twisted the new grip on - not fun, but it worked.  The throttle grip was another story.  Because of the very tight fit, I needed to take a 1" sanding drum to the inside of the Koso throttle grip to expand the inside diameter slightly.  After a few tries, and more WD40 it eventually worked.  BE CAREFUL THAT THE GRIP WITH WIRING HAS ENOUGH ROOM TO FREELY ROTATE AND DOES NOT BIND.

     3) Remove seat, lift tank and route wiring into position under seat.

     4)  Connect to pre existing plug next to battery.  Here is the pic:

Here is where it gets weird.  This connector is wired to a 15 Amp fuse on the secondary fuse box next to the battery.  HOWEVER, unless I've totally lost my ability to read a schematic or an owner's manual, the secondary fuse box is not correctly depicted.  To avoid a long explanation, the connector is the one DIRECTLY NEXT TO THE ONLY 20 AMP FUSE.  It is backwards when compared to the one in the owner's manual.  It is for "power socket, anti-theft devise, gps, etc.
I bought a socket at the auto store that works perfectly.

I simply crimped the pigtail to the red and black wires of the Koso unit and plugged it in.  Then used heat shrink and black tape as necessary.

     5)  Next, I secured the wires to the handlebar.  The clips (MG p/n 641652...they call them springs) came off after some persuasion but the wires fit nicely back on the handlebars.

I am happy to report that the heated grips worked perfectly.  The control unit and proprietary fuse is on the wiring loom and fits under the tank easily.  Nothing clutters the handlebars.  There is a small button on the clutch grip that cycles through 5 power levels and they get progressively warmer until they max out.  On my first ride I turned them up full (red light), for about ten minutes and then turned them to medium (yellow light) for the rest of the ride.  They were plenty warm.
I have other pics and tips if anyone is interested.  PM me directly.

Be well,
DougG
