Title: big bore kit head gaskets on eldorado
Post by: amamet on March 24, 2020, 11:15:32 AM
I got in touch with the previous owner regarding information on the 73 eldorado I picked up.  says it has a bike bore kit with iron liners and venolia pistons.  he doesn't know what size though. he replaced the head gaskets as the were butchered by the owner before that did the work.  he mentioned that he used convert head gaskets.  from what I know that shouldn't work as the pushrod hole are slightly off.  am I right?  what should I do for correct head gaskets?  I may try to go get the bike over the weekend.
thx

I did the same thing to my El Dorado ,here's the easy fix use the convert head gaskets assuming that your Big Bore Kit takes it out to 1000 cc ,convert head gaskets will work the only thing you have to do before you put the pushrods in just take a long drift and put it down into the hole where the pushrods go, and move the protruding part of the head gasket about 1/16 of an inch to 1/8 of an inch away from where the center of the pushrod would be ,that way the pushrod will not rub on the gasket material .

I did this to mine and I had over 250,000 miles on the bike when I did it, and when I finally sold the Eldorado and had over 350,000 miles.

I don't know the exact count but it was over 350,000 miles did not have any issues whatsoever

I sure hope they're not 89 mm bore sleeves. All of those I've seen, when the alloy cylinder casting is bored for them, part of the pushrod tunnel is removed, so the sleeve has no metal around it in that spot. That creates a hot spot and the sleeve burns or cracks there.

On one I did for a customer, I used Cometic solid copper head gaskets. https://www.cometic.com/

I just got stock 88 mm gaskets (if it is 88 mm) when i got 88 mm cylinders and the choice (HMB) was limited to 83 and 88, one or the other not some form of bike model option ?
No head gasket shows (850 heads)looking down the tunnels but did have to mill the push rod openings at the 12 : O clock side for clearance but that might have been due to using late model fat push rods and wider spaced '1000 rocker gear in 850 850 / Eldorado heads.

You will soon know when you look down the push rod tunnels.
Two of the original skinny push rods (83 bore / stock rockers) had wear bands / gouges around them from some form of contact.
