Post by: Kiwi_Roy on April 12, 2020, 10:41:29 PM
Inspired by this picture of my 3 Uncles

I don't know where our Dad was but here is his bike

Dad shows up a bit later at El Alamein.

Last time I was back in NZ we thought we would do a 3 Brothers group shot.

Ok Roy, now that we have a bit of background info about at least you and Kev, could you name and shame in order, the three of you in that photo please?

I should be able to flick it on to Dave R.

Those are great family pictures.  I wish we had something like that in our family, but we've got no biking tradition at all until I came along.  Motorcycles were by gum MOTORCYCLES in them days .....

Always respected the ability of the Commonwealth soldiers to fight in shorts!   If I were the enemy, it would make me wonder "What ELSE can these guys do?"   Not to mention the Highlanders ....

     Amazing photos and history.

The closest my family came to motorcycles was the retelling(many times, lol) the story of a close family friend who came home from the front in WW2 injured, not from battle, but from an accident on his dispatch/courier motorcycle.

Bikes were sometimes disparagingly referred to as "murdercycles" in my household, obviously not yours.  :thumb:

     Tks for sharing

Roy beat you to it Kev, but thanks anyway.  Will flick it to Dave's email.  He's locked down away at the moment and don't know whether he can access it from where he is.  Cheers.

BTW, the Harley our Father is riding rightfully belongs to the South African Army, Dad just figured he should "borrow it"
You can see here the plate fits right in the sequence.

He used to tell the story how the Sth African Army got a fright one night and moved out leaving anything that wasn't mobile behind, he repatriated several Harleys.

I think the NZ Army used British bikes but at the end of the war they took a large delivery of Indians too late to go into action. When I was growing up It was possible to purchase a war surplus Indian brand new in a crate, of course we never did.

Wasn't their warehouse burnt out and the remaining bikes went up in smoke ?
I was thinking Valentines in Hamilton but could be wrong.
