Those beasts are closer to giant rats , than pigs! I had a neighbor that would set out watermelon rinds to attract/feed them in his front yard. They are not at all friendly to  domestic dogs,as their arch enemy is the  wily coyote. They  have very poor visual acuity, but can be vicious!
  No bueno!

Send them to China as pork!

Thats funny, John! My brother in law took one down during archery season a few years back, and he brought it home to my Grandma to prepare, and cook. She had prepared many smaller pigs for roasting whole in a pit, years ago when she lived in Cuba. She said the javelina was definitely "different" than those. Even though she used juniper berries, plus a bunch of other seasonings, that sucker came out very "gamey", albeit tender. I think they have some kind of musk gland on their back that has to be carefully excised. I cant remember if grandma did that.. :azn:

pork chops at your door.

Except they are not pigs, or hogs...they are collared "PECCARY" and are from Central America, more related to Hippos and Giraffe's than the larger European Boar HOGS seen in Texas and Georgia.

I hear they can be eaten...but no thanks!

Nicknamed "skunk" pigs because of the aforementioned gland.  They are small to call them pigs would insult wild pigs.  We get the wild boars out here that average 300lbs./each and have nasty tusks.  Very dangerous just like the wild pigs in the Southern Continental U.S..

That was great! I miss seeing the little boogers. Used to visit daily when I worked in far Scottsdale. Stinky but cute, especially the little ones.

The little ones are called "REDS", and like most baby animals, they are indeed cute...but then grow up to be rather "nappy!"

I think South Texas "Javelinas" are considerably a different breed that will eat you first.

Hunted at night with OO buck and high powered handguns.  And get as many before they eat your dogs or you.

You are referring to what are called Piney Woods Rooters , a 300 lb evil tempered cross between European Boars and Feral hogs . Yeah , they will eat you , your dog , your cat , and bite chunks out of your motorbike after all that .

...and they are NOT Javelina's..but rather wild European Boars (aka, Feral HOGS)...and yes, they are quite "nappy!!"

Javelinas are generally harmless. They have poor eyesight and are easily startled. People and dogs get hurt when they catch the little guys by surprise. I've heard countless stories about people I new leaving their garage door open and coming back to a whole family of Javelina sniffing around.

I got to hand feed one once. Snatched a gluten free biscuit from a guy I worked with and waved it at a group of them as a joke at the restaurant patio. One came up and took it, gently and ran off. made my week.  Turns out a woman in the neighborhood was giving them dogfood.  Shame on her.

Wrong or not, they are referred to as Javelinas in some places.

I understand your precise use of the term but I've also known folks that hunted them that used the term differently.

White-tail bucks have an evil gland that will ruin the meat if not properly dressed, too, but people who know how to do it can avoid it.

There are BOUND to be folks that eat these tasty-looking things without skunking up the meat, even if they aren't pigs.   Probably more like eating a groundhog, but nothing wrong with that - they're probably "clean eaters", don't eat carrion and such, so they should taste good if done right?

I don't know a thing about them but I'll bet there are people who do.

If you call a Piney Woods Rooter a Javelina while hanging with the boys from Shepard Texas , they will laugh loudly and question your intelligence

So when was the Piney Woods in South Texas?  I have no idea where Shepard TX is.

But it looks like the State of Texas agrees with you guys.   https://tpwd.texas.gov/landwater/land/habitats/trans_pecos/big_game/javelina/

The South end of the Big Thicket goes pretty far South . What is called a Razorback in Arkansas is the same critter , although some of what we call these animals are more European Boar , and some are more related to domestic hogs . There probably are very few 50/50 mixes . In the end it doesn't matter , they will kill and eat you given the chance , we are nothing more than dinner to them . A Javelina is more like a Raccoon , don't threaten them they will usually just go about their own business .

Javelina just means Javelin in espanol.. and yes, that's what people call them all over the South West including parts of texas.. no, it's not a wild pig/boar/hog

there was a short video of one running thru a strip-mall type area recently, I'll see if I can search it up

No one is arguing that a Javelina isn't a Javelina , only that they are NOT a Razorback , or a Piney Woods Rooter , or what some call a European/Russian Boar . Those last 3 are hogs , and are evil aggressive critters .

You are correct...and "the Javelin" refers to their very sharp tusks!

That video of the speeding Javelina is a beauty!  They can run pretty fast as demonstrated!!

Got stopped in Big Bend National Park by a javelina road block.  They would not give way. No amount of yelling engine revving  horn honking or rushing with bike could get the to move.

Was just about to brave the rocks and cactus thorns to go overland when Park Ranger showed up and herded them out of the way with his truck.

Said it happened all the time because people would feed them, so they milled around in the road till some hapless tourist would come by and feed the lunch.
