Title: V7 III oil leak, possibly rear main seal
Post by: jas67 on May 02, 2020, 08:00:18 PM
Much to my dismay, my 2017 V7 III Special marked its territory sometime between parking it yesterday afternoon and this morning.

The oil appears to be coming from between the engine and transmission.

Has anyone else had this problem?
This bike is only 3 years old with 4,400 miles on it.   Any chance Moto Guzzi would help me out on this (I didn't think so)?

Depending upon what oil was used in the trans , some of the (trans oils) will have a bit of rotten egg smell to them .
Give it a wipe and sniff . Unfortunately , either will require separating the motor from the trans and then it's usually pretty obvious .

Are you sure oil didn't drop down from somewhere else?  I thought the typical rear main seal leak only shows up at the bottom between the engine and clutch housing.

On my Quota, it was leaking a decent amount (several spots on the back of the engine), and all that oil dripped out the tiny drain hole on the bottom ... the spots you pics are showing stayed completely dry on my bike.

Have you pulled your airfilter and looked inside the airbox ... dry?  or oil in there?

I've betting it is from something else.
