I had tagged this on the end of a marketplace post for "mufflers wanted". No response. So I figured I'd move it into the "general stuff" area.

"if yours has a H pipe installed that's most of the noise. especially if you wear a full face helmet."
Someone please talk to me about the H pipe versus the stock "tumor".
Got my EV with headers straight into fishtails. What a God-Awful racket it made.

(I assume this is the STOCK V11EV Muffler)**
Bought an H pipe from regular dealer and a beautiful pair of stock mufflers** from a good soul on this board.
Sound level is much better than straight fishtail but way louder than my BMW R100RT was with a similar displacement and rated power.
Is it realistic to expect the EV to be near as quiet as the R100RT?
Is there an appreciable difference between the EV run with an H pipe versus the stock tumor (sound or performance)?
Thanks.

I put the H pipe on my 98 EV so long ago that I forgot how the original sounded. They are noisy mechanical beasts. It will never be as quiet as the RT. My airheads were tame little kittens compared to the goose. For me, the EV and Stelvio are more elemental and enjoyable. I don’t Think that the noise is objectionable. Some people use to drive 1/2” steel rods thru the muffler opening to break thru the baffles. Louder and free flowing. If that was done to yours then it would be louder.

Is it possible that the stock mufflers you have now have had baffles drilled out? I drilled mine out shortly after I got my EV and the sound did get noticeably louder. I don't think my EV was ever as quiet as my airhead.

No daylight through my mufflers so I assume baffles are intact.
I ride these machines as (very enjoyable) only transportation. Gave up cars in 2008. The "charm" of an exhaust note disappears after the first 100 miles in a long day (or multi-day) ride.
'87 K100RS was the best sounding machine I owned. But the Geese have far more charm than the BMWs that preceeded them. The sound isn't part of the charm in my world.

the stock colostomy bag is much quieter and gives more torque period. With no H pipe and fishtails I bet it ran like crap. unfortunately on a 1998 it interferes with the transmission oil drain plug so everybody put on H pipes. problem is it is right under your body and with the full face it echoes around in your head. with baffles in the mufflers it's way worse than without them in. added to the noise is the air induction right in front of you and it is much louder than you might think.

That's the info I wanted to hear.
Used tumor on order, and I'll deal with transmission drain when it comes along.
Almost wonder if transmission couldn't be sucked dry with a pump and properly shaped tube passed through the FILL hole?

change it when u install the new C bag with mobil one and forget it for ten years just like on a car. and use a new crush washer, not the time for a drip.

Already running Amsoil 75W90 MT (Manual Transmission) lube. But I like to see the oil once a year to look for impending issues.

I was the starter of that first post, and ya I can bet your setup was loud!! Not sure a Guzzi will ever be as quite as the old airheads. I love the sound, but as you know, it gets old. Im intrested to know how you like it with the center muffler in. Mine does has the aftermarket H pipe, and also aftermarket mufflers. Im going to try the OE mufflers on the H pipe first... If still not right, I might try to find a mid muffler.

FYI here is the post I started a month ago about it.. https://wildguzzi.com/forum/index.php?topic=105681.0
Maybe some ideas there.

Since you already have the answer you were seeking, I'll add one thing. Somewhere along the way Guzzi added a second drain plug on the rear of the gearbox. I don't recall when that began, but if you have that, consider swapping the two plugs around so you can clean off the magnet when you remove the plug. When you install the big crossover, which does have packing material and therefore effectively a third muffler, it is nearly impossible to remove that plug without dropping the exhaust.

Not sure when they started either, but my 02 has the two plugs.

I will trade you a OEM mid muffler for an H pipe if you are interested.

Thanks for the offer but already bought one off eBay for $40 delivered (it's coming from Florida, coincidence or what?).

Yep, both my '01's had both.

I took the H pipe from my SP II and put it on the Cal III for grins.
Slightly louder but it ran slightly better, especially on top end.

I found one cheap also after you posted this. So I have one coming also. Im still hoping to get some OE mufflers also, so I can mix and match till I get the sound I want.

I was under the impression that the "tumor" was just a hollow expansion chamber without any sound deadening materials whatsoever???

There is a pretty serious pre-muffler in there . Said this somewhere , my Jackal with the stock crossover and no mufflers is quieter than the Bassa with the H pipe and Staintunes .

Can I got is for Jackal. It works, but appears to be almost an inch shorter than the unit used in the '98 V11EV.
If you are still looking for a trade I have a sound H pipe I'd gladly trade for your '98 EV resonator.
n3303j at gmail will reach me directly.
Thanks.
