Title: bearing question for transmission gurus
Post by: amamet on May 22, 2020, 06:32:50 PM
so im swapping gearbox covers, eldo cover onto g5 transmission for my 73 eldorado.  my question is, should the main shaft bearing in the cover kinda sounds like a skateboard deck (not really that loud but there's is noise) when I spin the main shaft in it? on the g5 cover, if I spin the main shaft its pretty much silent. both covers I have side by side flat on a surface with the mainshaft installed vertically. Not sure if I should worry or not. I can always swap the bearings I guess

bearings should be quiet. If it's making a noise like a skateboard then it's rooted, replace it.

Think how it’ll sound at road speed.  Probly drown out the tappet noise!

The noisy one is completely cleaned (Used kerosene as it was filthy) and has fresh gear oil applied to it. The other from the g5 has old gear oil and wasnt cleaned. I’ve used kerosene to clean steel bearings before with no issue.
