Hi,
I'm Guido and I write from Tuscany in Italy....and sorry for my English.
In 2010 i have bought a Griso 1100 Black and from these moment , i'have addicted...of Mandello "V" Twins! In 2014 with my girlfriend I'have bought an other Guzzi Stelvio 2012 NTX full accesoried , but in 2017 for family economy and the born of my son i decide to sell the Stelvio... :thewife:
....but the fire goes on....and 3 month ago I re-buy a Stelvio MY 08 ... not perfect but rollized at a good price ( :thewife: :thewife: :thewife:).
Obviously the Griso is part of family and i will not sell for anything reason!!
On him I have done some works (head compression & duct polishing , Entire Collector and Exhaust in Titanium by Arrow and Exan , Renforced Friction by Stucchi, Remapping by Agostini Mandello , Air Filter , Flywheel lightened , 8V seat , Head Lamps Led ...
Some Photos:

Now the problems.. :violent1:
During the quarantine i work on Stelvio 08:
- Change ALL OILS , Filter AIR , Filter OIL
- Complete Fork Revision
- Cleaning of airbox and trhottle body (from ispection of airbox)
- New Spark Plug
- Reset TPS
- New Exhaust GPR
- Fixed the problem that some times the motorcycle won't start (Base Relay 4 damaged)
I'm very happy of my Stelvio , but seems to have some problems during the 3500RPM and 4500 RPM like the gasoline is dirty.
I have try to investigate with Guzzidiag and seems to be all ok (injectors, coils, fuel pump). I have try also to isolate spark plug cable for possible dispersions , but with no big resulted..
If I exceed 5000 rpm the motor push strong with not problem... Why?
Coils or/and cables damaged ?
Lambda Sensor?
Gasoline Filter ?
Map ?
Thank you for your Works and for your tips!!

Guido,
Welcome! Those are wonderful Guzzis that you have!
Did the Stelvio have the problem of not running well as you describe before the repairs were made?
The sparkplug caps on that engine are very easy to damage and can cause similar problems.
If it did not have this problem before, go back to the items you worked on and make sure they are correct and secure. No air leaks.
I'm sure that some other forum members will also have good advice for you.
Ciao!

I would also ask if the fuel filter has ever been changed? My 09 Stelvio had a similar hesitation, cured by said filter change. Your English is just fine. Good luck, let us know. :bike-037:
-
No i have not change gasoline filter and dont'know if previous owner change It...
-
Don’t apologise for your English mate..
It’s like a breath of Tuscan air that I should be breathing right now.. Your passion is obvious and I know the guys here will help you.

Guido
Your english is fine and it seems you have a good idea of how to take care of your Stelvio. I am fairly certain the 08 model has a spot in Guzidiag to Reset the Learning Parameters after you do the TPS. This may help but if not easy to do.
Spark plug caps are suspect as well. Keep in touch here and you’ll get it figured out.
Where in italy do you live? Also welcome to WG.

I will try to reset Learning Parameters with Guzzidiag. Yesterday i have ordered Gasoline filter ....but I wolud not dissasemble tank  :undecided:
Cables Spark Plug , i don't think ....but could be (new is very expensive). I have done some test also during the road , moving and touching ...but nothing change

The problem now seems to be worsted.. now when i start the engine seems to be flood when i try to acelerate , with big empty power and problem to maintain the idle. After few second the situation gets better and the egine respond discreetly to the gas command.

Hi Guido,
Welcome to this crazy house of very knowledgeable motorcyclists.
I have one low cost suggestion. Remove the spark plugs and compare the colour. Are they the same? If no, you could use that to your advantage. Exchange the left spark plug cap for the right cap and see if the spark plugs exchange colour also. Then try the same thing for the wires, coils, etc.
Also, your town is beautiful! But I noticed that in the last picture, the old tower in the back looks tilted, almost as if it's falling over. That is unusual, so it might be possible to make a tourist attraction out of it. People could take funny leaning pictures in front of it and it would be a great location for bungee cord jumping. What do you think?

Hi, Mark
I have decide to disassemble tank, change filter gasoline. After I will check coils , cables sparks plug and I will do a deep cleaning of throttle body.
In the afternoon i have done the backup the original map.
The reason of my decision is been ,when i have removed the screws on the pipes connected to the cylnder for conntecting of vacuometer.. the screws was very dirty with a stranger mix like mud/slush and debris...never seen this type of dirt.
The Tower of PISA is very Famous and in reality is been straighten of 4,5° in 20 year....
There is an other tower in PISA not famous...but with the same possibility of jumping (San Michele degli Scalzi)

Pisa is small city , and the very beatiful place for the motorcycle is out of city:

You should be getting all the Problems taken care of with what you are doing. Your home city of Pisa is very beautiful, we were there just this past October and stayed in Poggibonsi - many memories...

Guido, have the original spark plug caps been replaced? The caps with a right angle at the top tend to crack on the bottom of the angle and then arc to ground. On my '09 Stelvio, it resulted in the bike running poorly and it also made the dash do strange things. As a temporary measure, I was able to put some electrical tape on the plug cap until I got the replacements.
Note: It is very likely that this has been taken care of but just in case.
Another thought, You said the bike had been rollerized. Did the ECU get an updated map? Mine did. I don't know what it is though.
Replacing the fuel filter is probably not a bad idea, especially if it has never been done. Getting to it is quite a job as you probably know. A plugged fuel filter would be starving the engine of fuel. Perhaps a look at the spark plugs might be in order. If they are dry it may indicate a lean condition.
Another thought I had was the lambda sensor. Did Guzzi Diag indicate it was working properly? If that is faulty it could cause issues. If I recall, you can turn that off with Guzzi Diag if it has not already been done or tried.

I have already isolate with electrical tape the plug cap with no result.I have try also to remove the plug forcing the start and the same time touching the cylnder , but i have not seen anomaly. The sparg plug caps are originalT

I Have the last map 42Z and i dont'think is a map problem...

Ok , i try to remove the spark plugs and take a photo

When i connect GuzziDiag i have seen the Lambda sensor regulate (in mv) i' dont rember the values , but effectivly disable the sensor is an other test to do , for this i have done a backup of orginal map
Thank you John.

Lovely pictures Guido , keep those coming .Thanks
These guys will help you sort this out .

Your checking has been very through. We will be very interested to know when you find the solution.
On an unrelated note, while you have the body work and fuel tank off, you might consider replacing the alternator belt. It would be the easiest time to do so.

I will try to rescue fuel pump but will not be easy!
The problem is fuel regulator pressure ...that is difficult to find. How is the correct pressure 3,2 bar ? 3,5 Bar ?

If that's a box of assorted connectors from amazon I'd like the part # or the sizes. I need to have some laying around.

Hello Guido,
Just curious if you have made progress with the Stelvio?
John Henry
-
Hi' John , today is arrived the new regulator pressure for the Fuel Pump , from Poland. Tomorrow or in the Weekend I will try to remount all parts.I think , will be necessary after a good carburation with GuzziDiag and vacuum gauge ...
I will post the next steps here. I have checked also the coils and the sparks plugs cables and seems to be ok. I have also rebuild a new female connector of the fuel pump and reapaired the damaged cables.
-
OK .... i'm just finished of remount all!!! :thumb:
I have done a complete diagnosis with GuzziDiag , for alignement throttle body, reset tps and check the stepper motor.
the result after this works was not optimal.... at 4000 rpm at costant gas the engine was gone up and down with strange behavior...
After this i have tried to disable Lambda Sensor.... and now the situation seems to be good for every range of RMP. First of remap in GuzziDiag i have noticed that the signal of Lamba sensor around 4000 rpm had big variations..
Now i have a doubt of all my works on the fuel pump , regulator pressure etc... are very necessary. I certainly found several errors in this mode ...
In the next Days i will try on the road...
Best Regards
-
Sounds like you are making progress. Ride time should tell.
The work you need was necessary no matter...
Mark
-
I thave tried on the road the Stelvio and now the engine is fluid and without gaps of power....seems to be a new motorcycle! I will wait a few days to confirm the results ... but for the moment I'm very Happy!
Thank all
