Title: 5 speed ID
Post by: Turin on June 01, 2020, 09:11:52 PM
I have a 5 speed in my parts stash. the # on top of the case id # is 12.20.02.01.
I think this is for an ambassador? (no clutch arm on the back to ID) I was going to use it on my upcoming project.

Sure it's not a 4 spd? If it's a 5 spd., then wouldn't be for an Ambassador since that model used a 4 spd. 12200201 seems to be a 4 spd. case.

It's an Eldo. Any reason I couldn't use it in a custom frame ?

FWIW I've intermixed a 4 speed and 5 speed trans on my generator cased engine , just keep in mind that I don't believe there
is a 4mm clutch hub made for the 4 speed trans . Clutch cable use is also different .  Peter

A 4 spd. can be used behind any engine that a 5 spd. will fit. IIRC, JB has one bolted up to the EV(?) engine in his V700.

I have a 4 mm spline hub in my V700, purchased from MG Cycle during the short period they offered them. They're still available from Pirner: http://www.moto-guzzi-pirner.de/en/index.html and HMB: https://hmb-guzzi.de/Clutch-hub-Newer-fine-splined_2

^ Good news about the 4mm spline , wasn't an item when I did my conversion , a few years ago for sure .  Peter
The other benefit to the 4 speed was that (on mine anyways) first gear was noticeably lower than on the 5 speed
which I needed with the weight of it .  Peter
