Title: Kansas Nut Run - Saturday, June 27
Post by: JC85 on June 14, 2020, 06:16:15 PM
With everything going on, we haven't done a meetup in a while. In two weeks, I have a couple of friends coming down for the weekend, and I'm going to let them run my spare Guzzi for some riding. I'm pretty sure that neither of them have had mountain oysters, before, so I'm thinking that maybe I'll take them down for a bite at the Nut Hut in Altoona. Anybody interested in joining us?

May be able to make that work. Saturday evening? Would probably end up getting a motel room in the area and have a rambling ride both ways. Have only had one overnighter so far this year so that would be a good excuse, especially if the weather cools down a bit.

That sounds good to me. There are a couple of decent hotels just 30 minutes up 169, where I live. And I could introduce you to my favorite mom and pop hole in the wall beer bar.

Do you think it would be OK for a 180 weakling wearing a double knit shirt with the plastic protector in the shirt to show up driving his pick up truck? At my age and condition I'm taking all safety precautions.

TIA,Tex

Turnip, you're more than welcome, no matter how you get here, as you well know. I just spoke to the gal who runs the Prairie Nut Hut. Confirmed that they will be open on that date, at that time, and she went ahead and marked down to expect a group of anywhere from 5-10 people, just in case.

There is an America's Inn in Fredonia. Only about eight miles from the hut.

There are several options for hotels in that area. For anyone who cares to ride back to Chanute (20-30 min ride from the Hut) and make an evening of it, hanging out, chatting, and having a few beers, we have a decent Super 8 and a brand new Holiday Inn Express.

It's a long ride.  Who's staying there?   If we did and overnight.  It's been a long time to be kooked up.

(Still need to be safe from virus.)

My only need is to be at a motel before dark as the T-3 headlight sucks and my night vision isn't what it use to be.

Just an update. Looks like we have a decent number of people coming to this one. Most excellent! The official plan is for everyone to meet at the Prairie Nut Hut in Altoona at 6 pm. After we have a meal and hang out for awhile, people will head back home or to their hotels. For those who are staying in Chanute, a few of us may go out to a local watering hole for a beer, and all are welcome to join. Chill little hole in the wall, run by a nice old couple. The kind of local business that you can't help but love to support. If anyone has any questions, let me know.

I believe they are staying at the Super 8. It's a long walk from there, but I don't plan on getting sloshed, so I can provide transport for people to don't want to ride to and from a bar.

I'll be taking the Trans-America bicycle route from Ash Grove, Mo. and on to Pittsburgh Kan, Chanute and all points in between. Thinking pretty seriously about riding this to Colorado in the early fall. It's all conviently marked by these lovely signs, There's no interstate and takes you by points of interest along the way :thumb:

The route you posted will take you within four miles of my house as you are between Newton and Hesston. If you have any desire you are welcome to spend the night, have guest bed and bath along with a garage to park the bike in.

Thanks John, I saw it went right by Newton, I might have to take you up on that!  that same route runs about 6 miles north of my house, I've ridden it to the east side of Mo. and west to pittsburg ks It's a nice relaxing cruise!

just curious, how many might be staying at the Super 8?   There's a pool there?  Is it a dry country or can we get some beer and ...?

I'm about 30% possible at best.  (tires)  Nothing can get shipped anymore.  Two weeks and no tire from Dallas?

well then it sounds like the pool might make more sense than going to the bar.  Especially if you want to social distance outside.   But  I'm not sure if those Norge saddlebags can haul enough beer & cigars?

oh well, I'd like to hear about it.

I rode a measly 40 miles in the heat.  Came home so exhausted I slept all afternoon. Too stinking hot for me.  :embarassed: I cancelled my reservation. See ya in the fall, hopefully. Have fun.

Don't take this the wrong way but the virus is starting to spike.

Is this diner crowded on Saturday night?  Is there room to stretch out or dine outside ?

Does anyone know if the pool is open at Super 8?

Even if I don't make the trip, others traveling might want this info.   Thanks.

It's a small place, but shouldn't we too terribly crowded. There is also outside seating available, which is what we'll probably go for.

Also concerned about social distancing, etc. Other concern is that we are forecasted to get late night storms here. If we get significant rain I may not be able to ride out due to living three miles off pavement. Will see.

Anyone that may have a motorcycle disadvantage (wind, rain, hail, gloom of night) is cordially invited to drive an automobile.  Even if you don't own a motorcycle.  No one cares.

I may be driving a brown Ford F150.  -or- riding a Harley.    :bike-037:

On another subject, here's the current condition of the license plate wall.  As all ya'all can see, it's mostly empty.  It needs all the help that it can get.  Please give !!!

Sorry to say that Slicer and I can't make it. I went to the eye doctor today and they wanted to know if I'd been doing any traveling. I said I went to my girlfriends, we drank a bottle of wine then we took a trip around the world. Now I need to go back Tuesday and can't travel out of state in the meantime. The Doc said for me to get some sleep and not drink so much and maybe the redness in my eyes would go away. I'm looking for a doc that will give me some respect.

Y'all enjoy a cigar and I'll be thinking about y'all.

Nice little run. It was good to see some Guzzi faces.
The Nut Hut charged me 11 bucks for the cheeseburger that was was only 5.89 on the menu, I didn't question it, since it was about a foot tall.

Then I visited for a while in St Paul with the nice policeman there who gave me a little note about doing 46 in a 35mph zone, or something like that...

That gave me an opportunity to switch my spark plugs from one side to the other since the SP was running poorly.  The St Paul cop offered to help me do it and I enlightened him on the joys of Moto Guzzis. Right plug was wet and black and the head was much cooler than the left head. Left plug was perfect. Ran like a champ the last 60 miles.  I ran through a berserk pack of raccoons in the middle of the highway after it got dark and don't know how i missed them. I was looking for deer and tucked in behind a car and followed slowly on in after that.
