Title: Cheap sport tourers
Post by: Gliderjohn on June 16, 2020, 10:03:02 PM
Used Norges have to be some of the best deals in the sport touring world. Took a bath buying mine new in 2011 but it was blow money anyway at the time. Just feels weird that I can probably get as much or more money for my T-3 than my Norge.

Many sport tourers seem low now ... like Honda ST1300's and Yamaha FJR's.  Cheap touring to be had.

With the rise of ADV and retro-classic styled bikes, traditional ST bike sales have waned. I think I have at least 11 friends who moved from their FJR's to the Super Tenere's. I rode with a bunch of guys in my unit out in Washington who has FJR's and RT's, when we re-deployed, they all (about 6) traded their ST for either the big Yamaha or BMW ADV bikes.

When I got back into riding in late Winter of this year, I searched high and low for a good deal on an RT; however, they are all still holding value on the used market even in this climate.  Comparably speaking, you can get a Norge or a Trophy for small dollars in comparison.

On my last Europe in 2019, most of the serious Autobahn/Autostrada runners were doing high speed long distances on KTM 1190’s, BMW GS 1200’s and Africa Twins.
I met a Spanish guy on the way to Portugal, he was 190 cm/140kg at least and he jumped on a current BMW 1200 GS.
It looked perfect for him..
Of course there’ll always be lunatics like this bloke at Cessalto, outside of Venice.
He had a torrent of oil coming from the rear main area on that white thing,

soaking the rear tyre, I suggested “prudenza”, but he said there’d be “for sure no problem, I am only going as far as Roma....”

If I could find another BMW R1100RS in nice shape and low miles, I would snatch it up.

My current R1100 RS just turned 89.000 miles. Very little issues, besides a clutch at 60k.

KOF, I know what you mean. Last year I listed my 2012 White Norge with 55,000 miles for $4,000. Not a single reply. Now it has 69,000 miles. No point trying to sell it now. I don't care. There's absolutely nothing wrong with my bike. I would like a bit lighter bike, but when the Norge is underway it eats the miles with the best of them. And she still catches the eyes of some discriminate females.

I’ve heard that ST owners liked the 1100 better that the 1300,  is this true?

I never owned a 1300, but I owned three 1100s and doubt there's a better sport tourer out there for the money. They just eat up the miles, great reliability, decent gas mileage and long range with that big tank.
