Title: Norge Dash Problem?
Post by: jwinwi on June 18, 2020, 09:19:06 AM
Hello All,
Looking at an 08 Norge 2 Valve per Cylinder with 11K miles. Pretty nice shape and has been maintained BUT... Seller reports 'minor lines in display'. Haven't seen pics of this yet but know that these dashes have had problems. Are 'minor lines' the first sign of impending failure?
Saw a thread or two about this but nothing specifically mentions the symptoms that lead to failure. If anyone can point the way to a past thread that includes lines on the display I'd appreciate it.
Also, anyone know what a replacement dash costs these days?
Thank you in advance.

From af1racing.com (but you'd have to check the model year):

Norge dash

Dashboard - 883568 (ex 883344) (ex 977524)
dashboard - 883568 (ex 883344) (ex 977524)
dashboard - 883568 (ex 883344) (ex 977524)

Typically a 5-7 Business Day Lead Time
$1,145.82

These dashes have two types of failures, in the PCB board  and in the LCD display. This seems more like the second kind, but I don't know. Ohiorider tried for some time without success to find a replacement LCD, as I recall. He may have more specific information on the symptom that you describe.

I recommend putting a conformal coating on any new dash, unless the factory has unexpectedly started to do this.

I think that's how my 1200 Sport dash problems started, lines through the LCD.
These would come and go, until finally the whole LCD just went black.

FWIW, there are at least a couple of used Norge dashes on eBay for much less, one even has the user code in the description.

The one I'm looking at is closer to home and half the price of yours.

Yep, but my dash works and the front end is way better than stock.  And you'll know it's history.  But, I get it.  Good luck.

Good luck to you; not a seller's market for bikes right now.

jwinwi -- as 2012 8V Norge rider who has done extensive forum foraging, it is a surety you are looking at a problem Norge, the dash being just one indication (there are others but you haven't shared them with us).  The LCD dash is most likely an owner-related problem, either outside storage and/or wet operation.  Yes the dashes have water intrusion issues but they also have sunlight issues.  In both cases that Norge is lacking TLC which will empty your wallet, steal your time, and diminish your ownership and riding pleasure.  My Norge had at least one previous owner.  One of the first things I did (besides dealer services) was an end-to-end search for hidden correct fasteners to replace the visible incorrect fasteners.  I purchased it with a 4=year warranty but nothing really was warrantable (eg, spark plug caps) so fixed them on my time and dollar.  There always some annoying thing.  The latest (and last because I'm giving the Norge to my nephew as part of downsizing) was replacing and tightening the sidestand bolts.

I bought my Norge because it was gorgeous.  My heart still beats faster every time I look at it.  But buy and ride it wasn't.  Spending the extra $3K for a well-sorted 2014 (the proven late model 8V) will be worth it if your goal is maximum riding pleasure with minimum wrenching.

And if you want a TPX with your Norge I'll mail you the one that came with mine -- one of the first PO's farkles I removed.

This. And when you add in the cost of the new dash and the time it takes to install that $3K will now be $2K?, plus the 14 is a better bike.

BR, Thank you for your response. Looks like I am lucky that  the bike was sold before I could make an offer. Not in a hurry to buy another bike and not sure the next one will be a Norge.
