Title: Small block crank seal. Oil or not?
Post by: SmithSwede on July 04, 2020, 10:52:15 PM
I’m replacing the transmission side engine crankcase seal.   I’m aware that there are some new-fangled PTFE seals that you are NOT supposed to oil.  But I’m assuming my new Guzzi seal is a conventional design, not PTFE, and I should go ahead and smear a light coat of of engine oil in the inner lips of the new seal when installing it.

I have no instructions or warnings that say not to oil it.  What do I do?

This is a 2013 V7 Stone small block.   I got the seal or what the manual calls the “gasket ring” from AF1 in Austin, part number 886365.   That part number replaced GU 04000500.

The seal itself has a felt outer cover on the transmission side.  The other side is labeled, reading clockwise:

Maybe try giving AF1 a call and see what they say about it.

Good luck,
Tom

no idea but "rotatzione sinistra" means left hand rotation.

A very light amount of oil on the lips will prevent the seal from tearing on start up and will go away in short order. Think Q-tip as a swab, a dab on the shaft and on the seal.
