Title: 100+ degrees, took a ride anyway!
Post by: JJ on July 07, 2020, 05:09:24 PM
...with my friends / neighbors...down to historic downtown Cottonwood, AZ, but I can tell you, with full-coverage helmets, gear, gloves, boots, etc., and a 100+ degrees.....it was just "TOO FRICKIN' *** HOT*** !!!

This time of year, one needs to get off the street BEFORE 10am in the morning...after that, it's BRUTAL!!

I've become a wuss, a fair-weather rider, mostly limited to 50-85 deg these days. Sad, really.

That dry heat is brutal. I have a mesh jacket that i only use between 75 and 85 f. Maybe up to 90f for short rides. Anything over that I go back to full leather and stop often for water. If not for the full leather you would have to stop even more often for water. The only time this really sucks is when you get stuck in a bunch of stop and go traffic.
JJ you are absolutely right, best to get off the road between about 10 a.m. and 7 p.m.

I put an icepack under my jacket if the temps are over 100 which really helps when waiting at a light.  :bike-037:

In my area the days have been hitting the 90 to 100 degree mark every afternoon for the last month. Yesterday I decided that I needed to just adapt and ride. I got up this morning at just after it got light enough to ride and hit the road. Really felt good for the two hour ride and made it home before things got too uncomfortable. Until this weather pattern changes I am going to follow this plan so I can get some quality time in on the bike. With all of the rallies we were looking forward to going to this year being dropped its the best I can do.

On long hauls in the middle of summer I use a camelback insulated water backpack. Fill it half with ice cubes, and the rest water. Holds over a liter. The over shoulder drinking tube works great even with a full face helmet. Triple digit arid heat I’ll have to refill it every gas stop. Always keep your jacket on, I just made the mistake of taking it off once, that sunburn wasn’t nice!

Here for now when I go out in the morning the air is still cool, but coming back from work in the afternoon we are at a little over 91F... I drive with mesh jacket and a t-shirt under it, but weather is so beautiful that I MUST ride a couple of hours before coming back home.
I HATED 2 months of lockdown...

Just bought a cooling  (hydration) vest from Revzilla for $39. A friend in (HOT) Tucson recommended it. It does the job!! Surprised no one has mentioned it here. Looks to be 110 degrees in a few days.

Relative to the two threads going on about "hot weather" riding, I can vouch for the problems caused by a mesh jacket in 90+ degF weather.

I was riding from home in Virginia up to a camp in Pennsylvania, 250 miles or so, on my '61 BSA A10 650, and it was a 95 or so degree day, humid too.   I was in a mesh jacket, jeans, and a T-shirt.   I had one pint bottle of water with me, which I had drunk at a gas stop at about 125 miles.

I got to the bar-b-q joint where we were meeting for the day, walked slowly in, sat down at the table, looked at everyone, got up, and would have fallen down if I hadn't had a wooden column to hang on to.   I was WAY dehydrated and hadn't felt it coming; I've never "passed out" before, but it was nearer to passing out than has ever happened to me in my life.

And this is where it's good to be around other guys.   If my wife or other women had been there, they'd have been calling the medics, stretching me out on the floor, sirens going, emergency room ... the guys, although they knew I was in bad shape, knew that I'd want anything except a gurney ride, so they helped me to my seat, got me two big glasses of ice water and poured part of one down my jacket and the other into me, got a couple of Snickers bars from the counter, and kind of "held me up" at the table between them (a scene from "Weekend at Bernie's") until I was lucid and self-supporting again, and it worked out, no harm done.

But mesh in hot weather will dry you out almost faster than you can drink water.   You have to be careful with it ....!

When it’s above 90 degrees with humidity here in PA,  the cooling vest will come out and I put it on under my leather jacket cracked open to allow air in. That makes the heat bearable.
Title: Re: 100+ degrees, took a ride anyway!
Post by: JJ on July 08, 2020, 04:24:52 PM
Of course, riding in 100+ degrees in 10-15% humidity is very different from 100+ degrees and 85-95% humidity!!

I have one of those cooling vests that you completely "SOAK" in water, then, wear it.  Out here during "The Forbidden Planet" summer, this will be completely dry in 20-25 minutes!!

One time, several years ago, riding back from the New Mexico State Rally, we stopped in Globe, AZ for gas / water.  I drank one large bottle, and poured the second large bottle over my head and onto my long-sleeve T-shirt, etc.  We took off, and again, the cooling effect was only good for about 20 minutes.

These days, I have tried to AVOID riding during the hottest part of the day, which is about 12 noon-dusk.  Mornings are fine, and again, if you go into the high country, like Flagstaff, which is about 7000 feet, you are better off...

Lannis is correct...dehydrati on can kill you!!

Yes, the weather in the PNW, (Pacific Northwest), is absolutely "magical" for the three months of summer....However, then comes the fall and winter...and it turns to cold, grey, rainy skies for the next 8 months...      There is no utopia for weather...unless you live in California...and sadly, that has it's own issues and baggage...and I am qualified to say because I lived in both places during my career...

Here in the south, mid NC where I live, the only time one can ride without getting the “swamp butt” is in the morning hours. If we do an extended over nighter we are kick stands up at 0600 and down at 1200, eat lunch and off to the hotel pool. Being miserable while riding is not fun!

Supposed to be mid-90s tomorrow, and my ride is from home in Central Virginia, US60 over to Buena Vista, then VA39 through the Goshen Pass to Goshen, then VA42 about 120 miles up through the Shenandoah Valley, then cross over on VA259 to Fulk's Run Gap, then take WV29 and US522 to Cross Junction.

Some of the best riding in the country, my favorite roads, and it'll be hot for sure.   I'll start out in the morning in leather, switch to mesh when it gets insupportable, and drink at least 2 quarts of water the last part of the trip.

Not bad if you're prepared!

I lived in Carlsbad, NM for around 10 yrs. We had some temps of 112-114 deg, and I saw people jogging and playing tennis on those days. Hottest I've ridden in was 110 to 113 deg for an hour or two--that was ridiculous.

I lived in Phoenix for 30 years before relocating to Northern Arizona  and as they started doing the summer/winter blend nonsense you could tell the difference in octane and evaporation. Nowadays I run 91 non ethanol in my 73 Charger and the fuel is so thin it presents a whole new learning curve to starting, especially when hot.  Tuning and rejetting the Thermoquad was a must to get it to be reliable,  but doable.
I also run that in the bikes, but they're fuel injected and haven't noticed running problems but evaporation is a big deal.  Spill a little on the ground and it's gone in seconds, not like the old days.

I took a ride this morning and it was bearable then but is forecasted to be 100 today.  I'll sit in cool air.

I remember maybe 10 years ago riding from OKC to Yellville Ark.  Normally a little more than 300 miles.  This trip I met my Texas riding buddies down in Mena.  This made the trip about 500 miles in 100 degree heat.  The last stop was in Harriet Ark, someone offered me some warm orange Gatorade, normally I don't drink it.  I downed the whole bottle in a flash.  When we got to the motel in Yellville, I jumped in the pool despite some leaves floating in it.  It felt good.  Fatigue is an enemy.

First, thanks JJ for the advice.

Paul, I bought the house brand at Cycle Gear for $39.  It's the same one that JJ  posted.

I ran it in the sink at the women's bathroom (don't ask) and took it out the door.  It wasn't soaked by any means.   91 and humid.  They run very tight, so I got a size (or two) bigger.  I think it will be a keeper.  I should've gotten it a lot wetter.  But I could feel it the entire time I rode in it.

HA!  Seriously, that's not considered hot here.  I didn't start to sweat until sitting at the last light, less than half a mile from our driveway, and I think that was due more to the hot-flash ( :thewife: it sucks being an "old lady") than the heat.

As far as keeping cool, those vests work wonders via evaporitave cooling.  When you live somewhere with (usually) low humidity, they are fantastic at keeping you comfortable.  My husband and I don't have the vests but we use Frog Toggs Chilly Pads in the extra large size.  They're a very inexpensive way to keep riding when the weather gets a touch too warm.

No wonder you don't hear about Bigfoot around there.

That's correct...no BIGFOOT's in "The Valley of the Sun"...but maybe in the White Mountains!!

Thanks John!  Have seen some models also with pockets for frozen gel packs...wonder if those would last longer than just plain wetting the garment, but either way, glad to know it's helpful.  I'm just usually covering myself with a bottle of water every hour out in the heat...luckily so far it's been hot but dry here, not much humidity so evaporation is more effective.

When I moved to Phoenix, many years ago, the first thing I did was buy a mesh jacket and mesh pants. I wore the jacket quite a bit but the first time I wore the pants was on a long trip on a very hot day. I was riding a Honda ST1100 that did 300+ miles between  gas stops. It had pretty good airflow but I soon found out I could go 300 miles between gas stops but I had to stop much more often for water.  I never wore the pants again but I did keep the mesh jacket for trips when the temps were under 100 degrees. Any warmer than that and I go back to leather and close it up.

I moved to "The Valley of the Sun" in 1980...we were young...and it was all fun then...the heat...tubing on the Salt River. etc. riding all over the state, etc.   We lived in Mesa, Chandler, north Scottsdale on and off until 2016.    However, then we moved north to Vortex-Land to escape the crowds and the heat and retired in northern AZ, @ 4500 feet above sea level.  No regrets...:thumb:    I believe Yavapai County is where I will take my last breath...and that's OK with me... :thumb:

I thought I'd test ride the chill vest today on the V11 Sport.  I mowed earlier and it doesn't feel so muggy today so the heat feels better to me.  Anyway, my phone says it's 97 degrees with Heat Index of 105.  So it's warm (to me 90 and high humidity + sun feels worse).

Anyway, I dropped the vest in the running faucet in the bathroom sink for a minute or so.  I rode it for about an hour on rural section line roads and some interstate, it felt like wearing a wet t-shirt.  I was wearing a mesh jacket and t-shirt underneath.  (and jeans, boots, gloves, helmet, skull cap and earplugs).

It stayed lukecool the entire time.  When I got my gear off my t-shirt is a little damp around my waist and back.   I'd say it might be an important piece gear to have when riding extended time in warm weather.   Until I do a trip, I won't know for sure.

I went out road cycling last weekend mid afternoon, it was about 104F, but very low humidity so it felt like Phoenix in Houston!  :)

Did only 1 8 mile loop and drank 1.5 liters from my 3 liter camelback - I usually fill it 1/2 way with ice, and then water, then drop a Nuun electrolyte tablet in it for some flavor too.    Thought about doing a 2nd loop, but figured I really should ride much earlier.  Not bad, but to be honest, a little too hot to really enjoy it.

Playing tennis or golf is a bit easier as there's no "wind effect" like when on the motorcycle or bicycle...just like standing in front of a full blast hair dryer...and at least you can stop and grab some shade from time to time!
