I had a 30x50 shop built out back, with 12' high walls and rafters about 15 feet up where I will be installing lights. I want to go with LEDs for efficiency and long life, but in shopping around I have discovered that it's a bitch to buy when you can't see them work. I have already returned one that couldn't cut it; I put it up temporarily to see how many more I would need to light the space adequately. It would have taken at least 30 of them to do the job. Before I go out and do that again, I think it would be wise to see if any of you have had to light a similar space and see what solutions you chose.

I only have a 9 foot ceiling in my 24 x 28 shop but these are the best I have found after using led tubes and fluorescent.

The two 120 watt units are mounted over my tractor so working on it is now a breeze. I keep a tube of sun block handy.

I just replaced the six 4' dual fluorescent lights in my shop with these. They don't have tubes but just a linear array of LEDs. Its very white like 5500-6000 kelvin but is great for shop work.

They come with switches, decent cord length and can be daisy chained.

I bought 8 each 48" LED Elcheapos from Rural King a few years ago for my 24x32 building. I forget how many lumens, kelvins, etc. They do a good job lighting but they interfere with FM radio reception resulting in a slight hum/buzz from the radio. I was told that I should have more closely scrutinized the noise spec for the lamps before I bought them. They're all on one circuit, perhaps I'll try isolating them to determine if the noise is being created by all of them or one defective one. I suspect that if I had spent $80 a piece for fixtures from the electrical supply place I wouldn't have this problem. Oh well.

Have got a couple of these in the garage, in addition to the lights on the fans also installed in the garage.
Screws right into a standard light socket...tons of brands on the market to choose from.

The shop is 20X40 with fairly high ceilings. I scrounged fluorescent fixtures from a church for free (Guzzi content) and had them for years. About 3 or 4 years ago, I decided to join the 20th century :smiley: and replace all the fluorescent bulbs with LEDs. I think they were around $5 each. Yes I had to rewire the fixtures.. and it was worth it. No shadows, etc.
32 tubes. Liked them so well, I did the Guzzi Garage (tm) and the basement in the house. Very inexpensive to operate, too.. (More Guzzi content.)

Chuck, what pin type (?) are the bulbs? Regular type with pins on end that are big/far apart, new tiny pins that are closer together, ? I've got to do my two shops with plenty of 4' flourescent fixtures and can't see buying all new fixtures that will likely be throw away junk once they start to fail. I would rather rewire the ones I have.

Costco lights for me too. My building is seperated into a 24 x 24 section and a 24 x 16 section each has 9 of the Fiet lights. Great lights so far over 2 years now. I was going to refit the flourescents I had but cost would have been greater and I was able to gift the flourescents to a fellow who had helped me with the renovation of my shop area.

They are a direct replacement. Just rewire the fixture. Another good thing is you can ditch the ballast.

Converting fluorescent fixtures to LED is pretty simple. Converted all the fluorescents at our business and all the lights at home.
You must determine if your existing fixture ends (tombstones) are shunted or not. Kits will come with new tombstones.
Plenty of info on the internet. Well worth the effort.
