Title: Convert Cut Out
Post by: giusto on August 02, 2020, 07:09:15 AM
Hi

I have a question. My 76 Convert has run and started flawlessly since I put in a Dyna lll Electronic Ignition three years ago. Quick perfect starts every time.

Coming into my drive from a nice ride last week and it cuts out.

No spark at the plugs. I checked the “run switch” as it seems loose...pull it off the bike and clean it up/ retention it.

The bike cranks fine, no spark... is there anyway to check the dyna lll through the Black/white/red wires?

Any ideas on what to isolate ?

Thanks

Frank

Three years, uh? I’ve heard of more problems w Dyna electronic ignitions then w original points.

Probably 5-1

Dyna website has a flow chart for diagnostics and has really good customer services so I’ve heard over the years here

I think it’s common to carry a set up points plate as back up for the dyna if your visiting the world

Good luck, sorry you’re down

I have seen this twice over the years with the Dyna lll. Once on one of my bikes and once on a good friends bike. In both cases it was the Dyna unit that had failed. One was fairly new and the other was several years old. Its not a common thing but it does happen. In both of these cases the unit was replaced with out further trouble.

nice to see you have it trained to break down at home.  :thumb:

I had a Dyna for a while, carried points plate in my saddle bag everywhere I went. Now I just carry it around in my distributor. Easy peasy.

I had the identical fault with my convert only yesterday but by turning the handlebars to the right my bike would run , turned out it was the multi pin plug was loose where it went into the back of the  headlight shell, just a thought.

Hey Ray bear,

When I removed the on/0ff switch We got in the multi plug to remove the switch pins... thought it might be the switch or pinched shorted wires...but no...put the multi back securely.  btw I could use another headlight shell for another Convert I'm putting back together...have one?

I'll be contacting dyna for trouble shooting.

cheers

Does your Convert still have the side stand switch ?

If yes disconnect it and see if your problem disappears.
