I have a Givi tank bag with the tank ring that fits over/in place of the gas cap ring.  It works well and doesn't seem to scratch the tank.  If you get the right one you can put a tablet in the clear window to use as a GPS.

Put this under anyplace you attach straps, bags, and such.  You'll experience perfect protection with zero downside.  This stuff is the bomb.

Is that a permanent application, or can it be peeled off after a trip with no adverse effect?

I wear a backpack instead of using a tank bag on the Carbon, mostly because of the stripe.  I only put soft stuff in there like rain gear, water bottles, spare gloves, and feel it provides additional back protection in case of a get off.

I would be concerned with overheating the unit.  Some are smart enough to shut down due to heat.  Some aren't.

I really like the OEM one from Moto Guzzi. Neat, tidy, a good size, with 2 useful side pockets. Has a tank bra that fits to the tank. Not waterproof, and the rain cover that comes with it may not last forever, but a trip to the local motor trimmer solves that. The downside, of course, is that they are not particularly cheap.

Otherwise, check out Wolfman - they have a waterproof one that's quite shallow, with a window on top. Well Mage. I've tried a Kreiga US20 with a tank bra. It's also waterproof, but I find the roll top & no pocket a little limiting. My Special came with a Bagster tank bra (with stripes to match the tank), really protects the tank well, & and Bagster have a few different bag that fit.

While you're looking, you'll have to reject most of the usual offerings, which are designed for the humped insect tanks - you'll want one designed for flat tanks.

I've found the cheaper ones dont necessarily wear all that well, but they are useful to sort out the features the rider finds useful. I prefer a separately accessible window, and one or two separate pockets, and I've found it does not need to be expandable - a small or medium one has enough room so all in there is findable, and doesn't weigh overmuch.

Good luck.

The beauty of the IRC Racers tape is that you can apply/remove with ZERO worry of marks, residue and such.  It also passes UV so if you have it on for an extended time the protected area will age at what ever rate everything else does.  it's not "tape" as you may be thinking but it is a poly product that adheres.

You can use it for one time use or leave it on for as long as needed.  I protected a Tiger 1050 tank for 5 years and when the tape was removed you'd NEVER know it's there.  I protect the front down tubes with this stuff at the start of every season.  keeps the road grit from "polishing" them.
Literally hundreds of uses for this stuff.

Thanks for that information mate!
Very timely as I'm  about to start using a Tank bag again shortly.

If you are hitting Glacier first and heading south to Yellowstone, you MUST take the short side trip toward Great Falls and stop at THE SHONKIN SAG and then a short stop at the Ulm Pishkun (First People's Buffalo Jump State Park)

Two of the best stops in Montana, in a place full of amazing places...

Hi, I have been using the Cortech magnetic tank bag for the last 5 yrs and really like as its well made and it expands to 18 liters (from 12 liters). It has straps to wear as a back pack when you get off the bike. It also has an insert (hole) for your water bladder (allows me to drink while riding on really hot days). Here is the link: https://www.revzilla.com/motorcycle/cortech-super-20-18-liter-magnetic-tank-bag
