Title: What size is this damper rod hex?
Post by: moparrob on August 22, 2020, 01:49:11 AM
I am going to re-valve my forks on my 2001 Jackal and was wondering if anyone knows what the size of this hex is or if there is a proper tool to hold the rod while loosening the bottom bolt?  Thanks in advance for the help.

In my expierence 1" steel box tube work a treat. I've also used 7/8" or 1" hex nut. Can't remember.

Yes, I have heard that before  but I was hoping to weld up a tool with the proper size bolt head to get a better purchase on the tube if possible.  I will use that if all else fails. Thanks

Not to be a jerk , but what about a simple check with a caliper ?   Peter

If I'm thinking of the right allen, the SOP is to use a rattle gun.

The reason I don't measure it and buy/make the tool is that the bike is presently operational and I want to have the tool in my possession before I start the job. That way my bike will only be out of service for one day.  Valid question though.

That thing looks very similiar to the Suzuki damper I worked on this weekend.  If indeed it takes a 30mm nut, this might work if it is long enough (17 inches)    https://www.ebay.com/itm/Tusk-Fork-Cartridge-Holding-Tool-Fits-Suzuki-DR650SE-1992-1994/333514319028?ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT&_trksid=p2057872.m2749.l2649      (https://i.ebayimg.com/images/g/zesAAOSwkiVeRgwi/s-l1600.jpg)

Yes, I think you are correct.  I went to home depot and matched the 1 inch square tube to the 30mm socket they had for sale. That probably is the correct tool.

It amazes me how little info there is on the net for Guzzi repairs as opposed to, say, a 1973 Honda 750...
