Hi all,
Long time listener :laugh:
I dragged a 1994 Cali 1100 carb model home from a local junkyard. Initially I was going to part it out: the 5-speed is worth what I paid. But it's not that bad on its own, 10k miles, title, nice tank and pretty unmolested. Looks like it took a lick on the right rear and the bag mount, taillight and rear fender are a bit beat up.

So, strip it down and get her running as is? Cafe it a little with some older Tonti stuff laying around, or drop the powertrain in an older Tonti frame? Hmmm.

To the OP, the proof will be in the pudding when you take a hard look at the damage on the far side, but if the swing arm/driveshaft and surrounding frame work hasn't been tweaked and is still straight, I think you just bought yourself a very nice motorcycle.
From 20 ft the paint job is beautiful, that front fender alone with the chrome supports looks like a work of art.

FYI, I just sold a five speed gear box for $300 on eBay, it only got one bid..

I know it appeared uncharacteristicall y brusque, but good manners and decorum would have prevented me from enquiring had you purchased the bike in the time honoured manner.
But to say you dragged it home from the junkyard conjured up an image that you reached in with nano seconds to spare and saved the old girl from the crusher...!
I tested the water on the cultural sensitivity angle, because although it would have been ok here in Oz, I’ve learned that there are delicate fringes to foreign cultural fabric sometimes..

Huzo, about $900 of those Oz dollar thingies.
I put a Zadi switch on it yesterday (someone had taped a toggle switch in the ignition switch hole in the dash) and borrowed the battery from my T3 and it spun over with compression and spark. It looks like any 1100 Cali mufflers will fit? Slash cuts gotta go!

Yes any muffler from a late Tonti frame will fit, EV, Stove, jackal etc

You know, Fred, pretty sure I've still got a pair of Bub mufflers, complete with baffles, stamped Cal III in great shape. They're not doing me any good. If they'll fit (?) & make your bike happy, let me know so they can.

Thank you! But I am pretty sure they are different. Cal III and the 93 1000S use the same mufflers, and starting with the 1100 I think there was a change. I'll test-fit a 1000S muffler and see.
Of course, the 1000S has always been a little quiet.... :laugh:

They're yours if you want them, Fred. If you pulled out the baffles, I bet they would sound the same as the empty shark gill shells on my old bike.
These turned up at the shop in Chesnee in a pile of HD take-off stuff. Nobody knows where or when or who they came from, so they came home with me.

That's awful generous man! I think they might fit the Cali. The Cal 3/1000S mufflers are "S29" and the Cal 1100/Jackal mufflers are "S3060", but the mount lines up. The S29 is just shorter:

Yes a title is on the way. It may be marked "salvage" but I can get a tag. When I strip the stuff off and assess, I may get back to you on the racks.

Looks like the bleed nipple broke off and they jammed that in to get the rest of it out. :tongue:

The first shot is on the side of the road where the owner had come to a stop..
He said “it made a funny noise and wouldn’t go...”
I put it into low gear on the centrestand and spun the back wheel by hand...!
The bike had been for sale for 4 grand prior to the gearbox spline letting go, so I loaned him my abacus and deducted what it WOUKD cost him to get a replacement ‘box and new clutch, factored in with 20 hrs workshop time and we came up with..
4,000-3,000=1,000
and the rest as they say, is history.
The whole thing took 5 minutes.
Old mate Baz spent $1,400 on it and this is it now..

I made some room in the shop and took a closer look and stripped off the bashed up stuff (taillight and bag racks). A little rubber-mallet work got the rear fender straight and I think everything left like the frame and backrest/rack are un-bent. The bike didn't have a center stand so I bolted one on from an 850T temporarily (it's too short for anything but smooth flat surfaces and a worn 130/80 17 rear tire.)
Both fenders need a little touch-up work and the side covers a little repair to where they attach, but the tank was very nice.

Has anyone come up with an elegant replacement for the stock taillight and turn signals? Every bit of that is plastic and the mount on the fender is weird.

I got nothing on the turn signals; but before I replaced the tail light bracket on the Cal Vin, with a new and improved oem, I looked at some of the alternatives, that others have used successfully.
I've never seen one up close so I can't speak to quality, (available for $30? on amazon) but these Duo Lamps for model T's, A's etc look pretty nice, imho.

My Cal was an insurance total. I bought it in 2001 for $1500. It needed a back fender and taillight. It's a keeper...

Sweet! How is it attached to the fender? Did you trim off the little "box" the OEM taillight fits onto?

thanks. I left the 'shelf' on the fender, but removed to the two posts that the OEM light slipped over, which left two clean holes.
I then fab'd a license plate/light mount and used the two new holes to mount two. Grolsch washers included to act as dampners. I aslo painted the can black and left the ring chrome so it's the same as the headlight. I think it's a good solution for these bikes. If you decide to go OEM, I have the original light cluster I may be interested in selling, although the brand new OEM from MG Cycle seems pretty reasonable.

That looks like it but says it's for 1998-forward. 100% plastic! I think I am going to modify an early CEV steel mount and add a plate with three holes similar to what kidsmoke did to fit the three grommets that hold that plastic thing onto the fender. That way I can use a semi-round tail light a la T3, etc. I might add a tag plate to tie to the lower hole in the fender for a little more support.

I dropped the sump and there is evidence this poor bike was loved at one time: the golden hose clamp was there, in metric even:

I cleaned it all up and put in a new oil and UFI filter (part of a stash of bits that came with the Sparklehorse G5 Police) and bled the brakes and both systems pumped up firm.
I got her running but there are a few issues: The tach doesn't work, the headlight doesn't work (even tho the bulb does work), the idiot lights don't work and the bike isn't charging. The blinkers, horn and instrument lights do work. One of the little relays was a little warm to the touch so I shut her off.
Via search it appears the tachs are not robust, nor those little relays. I have a wiring diagram and a multimeter so hours of fun coming up.
Also, the little rubber connectors from the carbs to the tubes connected to the airbox seem too short, and the PO had wrapped those connections in tape. Yuck. Any magic to getting the carbs sealed to the runners?

For the electrics not working. I'd start with a full set of new relays, one good place to get them is dpguzzi.com (Pyro Dan). Maybe check the connections to the ignition switch too.

Thank you. I'll order a set of relays. These are the original Seimens. I put a new Zadi ignition switch but I'll double check the connections. The wire colors didn't exactly match my diagram.
The safety yellow stand :laugh: is just one I had laying around. I have a Cal III stand around here somewhere that should be closer to the right height.

I borrowed the ignition switch off the Cal 3 carcass and noted the wire colors (which match the Cali 1100) and connected it, and one of the spade terminals on the brand new Zadi switch pushed its way up into the switch. Could have been an issue, but not the only one.
Clearly at least one relay is fubared. I played around with them today and swapped the one that gets hot from socket to another. Bike now charges the battery, headlight works and the oil and charge lights work (and go off when I start it!) and even the tach works! With a full set of good ones from Dan P it should be pretty much back to full function.

A bunch but never had a California of any kind except for this one and a roller Cal 3, and none with these little relays!
I am building a hot rod with a LeMans 1000 motor and a T5 frame. I've also had a 91 LeMans 1000, an SP1000 and a Quota. I miss the SP and the LeMans.

Needs a little trim piece to cover the hardware but it's secure.
Turn signals are just some aftermarkets I had laying around. I'll try to get the factory versions to attach with a much-shortened stem. But I'm legal for now.
