Title: Which dipstick to use?
Post by: Harley PHD on October 09, 2020, 07:06:40 PM
I finally got the 1980 V50II running with the 1982 V50 Monza replacement engine.  The dipsticks from the two engines are different.  The Monza dipstick looks like it had been cut down and welded together.  Harpers shows 2 different part numbers for the two motors.  I'm also finding different specs for the oil capacities , from 2l, 2.25l, to 2.5l.

Here is a  picture of the two dipsticks.

    Which one should I use?

My green multi-model shop manual printed 4/83 states 2 liters for V50III , Monza, V50C
I got it cause I traded a V50III for my Spider Sport Fiat w/blown head gskt and my brother bought his wife a V50II
2yrs before I had traded my 80 SP1 for the Spider to the same friend then I got his wifes new bike and he got his Spider back. I had already bought my LM3 and kriss cross the country for 10K break-in. Buying bikes & selling corn & soybeans.
That was 1984
The owners man for V50 III says 2.5 liters

Does Guzziology give you a clue?

Guzziology shows 2 Liters of oil for most small blocks.  I have put in 2 qts and 4 oz (If the marks on side of the oil bottle are close) which should be 2 Liters.  The mark lines up with the dipstick that came with the 82 Monza engine.

I guess someone made the dipstick to be accurate for 2 liters of oil.
