Title: 4K Mile Original 78 Lemans I For Sale
Post by: Dave Swanson on October 21, 2020, 10:05:24 AM
It doesn't get any more original than this one!  What do you think of the price?!!   This seller always seems to scratch the top of the market, and gets it.

I wouldn't trade my Lemans for it, but it is an interesting bike.

For some reason they tend to get the high end of the going rate, but can't fault them for it.

$26,500 is a LOT of lettuce....

Back in 1980, before I moved from NORCAL to AZ, I sold my '78 850 Le Mans for about $3800.... (Who knew?!?)

LMI that are complete, low miles, good condition--- or very nice correct restorations-- are selling all day around $20k+

I dont see how one that is this original with such low miles would be considered out of range at that price?  Not for me, but I think someone will snap it up?

Should also consider the cost of living in the area of the seller, no? I bet it ain’t Alabama.

Some things, no matter how original, should be changed. For instance, the white plastic fuel banjos.

Correct you are!  It has me thinking that I should paint my velocity stacks gray though!

And in that photo, is that a garden tractor battery I see? You'd think for the $$, something better would be installed.

...And why is the black paint on the tank so shiny?
I predict it won't sell at that price.

Yes...without question...and even when new...it was clearly the WORST seat in motorcycle history...then, after many years...the FOAM gets hard...and it indeed morphs into the 2 x 8 knotty pine board!!

It has me thinking that I should paint my velocity stacks gray though!

You should be able to find gray OEM Dellorto velocity stacks if you look around.  Bevel Heaven has them for PHFs but the color looks off to my eyes.  I notice the gray starter solenoid cover on your bike, many were updated to black over the years.

My original '79 LeMans seat has been pretty good for me since 1987, now with 100K miles showing.  I've done many long days on it and liked it.  Its no harder than it ever was, and pretty soft.  Many other seats are worse for my rear end, for example the stock LM III seat which was was narrower and harder.

This bike has the advantage of being unmolested and low mileage, a good thing, but is otherwise a bit 'rough but restorable' to my eyes.  I've also disliked how people cut off the Italian license plate holder ever since I bought a new replacement for my bike in 1989.

I agree.  It is a bit rough when you consider the asking price.  Putting into a proper state of fettle could be an extensive undertaking.

But then - it does come with the Guzzi shop rag!!  That puts it over the top!

4,000 miles or 40,000 miles its still a 42 year old used bike. If someone is looking for living room art and has money to burn, more power to them but if you want to ride it it still has its marginal suspension and heavy clutch. If this was new in the crate them maybe the price is justified but its not.

That's a lot of $$, but they're in NYC with a hip shop to support.  And holy crap, it has the manual!

I paid circa $15k for a 4300 mile fairly original (save for lightened flywheel, reground cam, a decent repaint and Lafranconis) '78 a couple of years ago.  More than I wanted to pay but there was another guy behind me ready to go and I'd missed on a couple of auction bikes.

It's awfully easy to get into the 20's once you start taking things apart.   For me, it was worth the experience and knowing the exact state of the bike.

If you guys are mad about this LMI, go check the price on the 1993 Magni Sfida 1000 with only 26k KM he just put on his site  :whip2:

I hope he gets his price and the LM I is still a lot less than this Ducati of the same period.

I wonder if he knows that the V7 Sport for which he's asking $19,500.00 is not wearing its original speedo. He exists because his customers have more money than brains knowledge of the bikes they are buying!

I give.  What's wrong about the gauges?  Or do you have prior knowledge of this bike?

The speedo is a Civilian Eldo type because the needle tip comes to a sharper point than the Tach needle.

Also, every V7 Sport I have seen has engine numbers like below.  The V7 Sport on that site neither has the VK or the *________* that I can discern.

Waaay back in the day, I bought a year-old '82 (I think) Harley FXR (tarted up to be a "FXRS Tribute", in current 60s-70s muscle car language).  After I bought it I started reading all the road tests I could find & universally all the testers/evaluators complained about the seat  being very uncomfortable & not up to the relative improvements that model represented overall.  However, I found the seat to be the most comfortable seat I'd ever experienced up to that time.  Seat comfort seems to be a very subjective & personal issue.

The entire issue is pretty irrelevant to me, unfortunately, since I've passed the age where folding my body up to use low bars and rear-set foot controls is an option for anything other than VERY short rides.  Hips & back complain long before my butt does!

I don't get you guys, you should be happy that someone is pushing the price of older bikes up. Le Mans are selling anywhere between $15 and $22k and as said above Ducati of the same era $45k and above. Mind you it's the same on a Ford forum I look at. People complain that the prices of their 60's era cars is not great and 2 low but as soon as someone puts more $ than normal on the car that there trying to sell everyone bags them that the price is to high.

Nobody likes price-gouging. Or over-zealous trend-pricing. Me, I’ll sit with the fellow curmudgeons. True love is acknowledging reality, warts and all.

I think that is one of the prettiest motorcycles out there, but I’d really like to see it in person.  If it were mine I would be unable to keep from addressing the non-use and corrosion issues.  It would be a 30k motorcycle before I knew it and then I would be afraid to ride it. Then I would sell it for $22k.  Repair, rinse repeat.
