Some of you know about Benny , the 26 lb Terrier/ Border Collie cross we more or less adopted about 4 years ago . He was never really a pet , always had his own agenda , part of which was to protect the neighborhood , a job he too seriously , and was pretty effective at performing .
Anyway , about 6 weeks ago he was in decline , so we went to the vet , and after some treatment he recovered , or seemed to . Apparently he had contracted meningitis and the vet missed it since it is so rare in older dogs . We tried everything , unfortunately we just couldn't get in front of it . This morning as 10:00 he crossed over to the other side . We had several minutes to say goodbye , he was already slightly sedated , first time in a week he was pain free . I wrapped him in his blanket and we sat outside watching it rain , he seemed at peace as I held him for the last time , he always enjoyed his lap time .
So long Benny , you will be missed .

Sorry to hear that, brother. It'll be odd talking to you on the phone without you having to pause and holler at him, every few minutes. Glad he's no longer hurting, and best wishes to you.
-
Dusty, I'm so sorry to hear about Benny. I recall the phone calls where Benny was after the mailman, or some other mischief. Felt like I knew him. You gave him a good environment, allowing him his independence, but caring for him when he could no longer care for himself.

Dusty,
So sorry for your loss.

I'm real sorry to hear that, I can relate.

I'm very sorry for your loss of a cherished friend Dusty.
I only take in rescued pups. Every one a treasure. Perhaps another will come your way.
Be well, R3~

So sad; losing a pet is one of life's worst experiences. After losing our 18 year old cat, doubt we will have another??
-
I’m very sorry for your loss Dusty. He sounds like he was a scrappy little fellow, and a friend to you and neighbors. I’ve heard him many times, but regret not meeting him in person.
I’m glad you were able to hold him at the end.

Dusty
never easy, but a good farewell....

Dusty,
Only another pet owner like me fully understands. At least you got to hold him at the end. It is truly sad when they take off and you don't know what happened to them.

That's always tough duty. Being alongside them for the final act of kindness is all they ask for.

Sorry got your loss my friend.

Sorry to hear that Dusty. If the little guy could, he would have thanked you for everything you've done. You gave him a good home and a job to do. RIP little hero
-
Im sorry , Dusty. I dont know what to say. I have a 14 y/o Jack Russell terrier companion that is also in decline, and I will have to face the same thing soon....reading your story about the little Hero sure makes the computer screen get all blurry....
Take care,
Rick.

I lost my best buddy Jake 7 months ago...every time I read about someone losing their pet it's like losing him all over again...I feel your pain, sounds like a great dog.
-
Very sorry for your loss, Dusty...Pets are part of the family...and it is always sad and painful when they go...
R.I.P. Benny and Godspeed...He is in a better place now...
-
I’m so sorry Dusty. It’s a gut wrenching ordeal and you and your family are in our thoughts and prayers.
-
Sorry, Dusty. Dorcia and I have never cried as much as when we buried Ray, and then Radar. Pets *are* special. They teach us about unconditional love..
Have a good trip, Benny. (raising glass)
-
That's a sad story Dusty as it sounds like there was a strong attachment between you two. Benny's pain is over and your grief begins. Give yourself time mate.
-
Condolences here. Totally understand.

I told my pack about Benny, they’re sorry too

Benny was abandoned by a family who moved away from the hood , and for a year he lived under a house across the street . He had a couple of families that put out food , but no real home . It took a month to finally gain his trust , and even then he remained incredibly independent . Before we took him in he ended up at a shelter and was adopted . A week or so later he was back .According to the address tag on his neck he had traveled 6 miles and had to cross several busy streets on his journey back to where he considered home .

Dusty. Try to take some comfort in the clear fact he came back to you. And to your ‘hood. It really was where he wanted to be. Where he figured it was his duty to protect.
There is a special honor in being chosen by such an independent dog. He kinda wanted to die with you when the time came.
This still totally sucks. I’m just saying . . .

So sorry. You went above and beyond for what was a damaged but apparently great little guy. What else can I say but thanks for trying so hard.

Sorry Dusty. Always a loss when they leave us. They become part of you while they are here.
-
Dusty, Sorry to hear that sad news, there's nothing quite like the hole in your heart that a good dog leaves.
Glad that Benny was able to walk proudly for his final years, while he took care of you and your kingdom.
Thanks for sharing

So sorry to read this, and our thoughts are with you, Dusty. We've been there, too.

Sorry for the loss of your buddy. If there is one thing I.ve learned in life is that both people and pets will never forget the kindness of a stranger , or a loved one. I firmly believe that when we pass to the other side we can then look after the ones we love from another dimension. You have lost good friend, temporarily, you will meet again, you also just gained another guardian angle. Dave

Place a hand over your heart. Feel the beat? That's Benny's tail wagging.

About 3 years back very early one morning Benny was agitating to go out , alternating between barking at the front door and jumping on my chest . Drag up out of bed and open the door , Benny makes a beeline for the house across the street , recently vacated by a woman and her son , two people he was close with . In his mind they were only temporarily not home , and were still under his protection . After pulling on some jammies I step out to keep an eye on him just in time to witness him chase a guy across the street and into a driveway next door , cornering his prey between a fence and an out building , half circling him growling and barking . Maybe 10 seconds later a cop comes from the same direction Benny had chased the guy from . He was laughing at the situation , apparently as he pulled up behind the house in response to a prowler call he witnessed all 26 lbs of Benny fury attacking the guy , pulling him by the leg backwards out of a window the bad guy had broken to gain access to the house then chase him out of the yard and then contain him until back up arrived . No idea how Benny knew the bad guy was even in his friend's yard , maybe he heard something .

Should have called him Benny the wonder dog or Rinn Tin Tin??
When I was still single, I lived in a not so nice Springfield 'hood, I was laid up on the couch watching "The Fly" with my trusty Standard Schnauzer Ike. Suddenly he went APES#*t barking at the window to the south. I got up and looked and someone had tossed a molotov cocktail on the porch of the vacant house next door. Later I found out the contractor and the owner had a payment "conflict"
I'm a firm believer that dogs are smarter than some give them credit for. Ike probably kept that house from burning to the ground. It's a nicely remolded home now that was built by a Frisco exec. in the early 40's

Benny the Wonder Dog! :thumb: Feisty little character.
Sorry to hear that Bennie has departed Dusty. We only ever had one dog, and the pain that comes with the loss seems to be every bit as hard as losing a human friend.
My sincere condolences.

Sorry for your loss Dusty.

Sorry Dusty,we know how you feel. Our old lab passed this year after 12 years and we miss him more than we imagined we would.Hope we can make it to Kansas in May. Tom andDeb.

I think the feelings we have for our dog is only surpassed by their feelings for us. They will live past their time just to be with us. I’m sorry for your loss Dusty, it is some consolation that he was able to find you and you were able to provide a home and a good life for him. He belongs to the ages now. Maybe another will find you although Bennie is a hard act to follow. Thanks for telling us about him, Best regards

A member of the family...very sorry to hear he’s gone. Sounds like he had a great life and the end came fairly quickly, so a life well-lived for sure.
I believe there is a place where there’s a never ending stream of mailmen to bark at, balls to chase and other dogs to play with...and where a couple of my best friends were waiting to say hello when he arrived.
I’m sure we’d all enjoy some pictures when you feel comfortable sharing.

Sorry for your loss, Dusty. In the 45 years that we have been married, we have had about 10 dogs, all rescues. We have had to say goodbye to them all. Never easy, but our lives were so much better for sharing the time with them. Our last one was a Bennie also.
-
I am so sorry for the loss of your buddy Benny Dusty. Cherish the time that yo had with him. I know you will.
All the best,
Rob
-
Our sincerest condolences. Benny must have been the 'background soundtrack' I heard on some of our conversations. It's a hard thing.

Yes . He wasn't the best pet , simply too independent , but there is this . Yesterday I walked the neighborhood tossing mini candy bars to the kids . Lots of questions about where he has been , "we haven't seen him in several days , is he alright?" One teenage girl who is developmentally challenged that Benny had taken under his umbrella started crying when I told her he is gone . The whole neighborhood is in mourning over the loss of the guardian . While often times our relationship was a battle of wills , he brought joy with him.
