Title: Tonti Steering Stems
Post by: Turin on November 24, 2020, 10:53:39 PM
Odd question. I have a rebuilt LeMans 1000 front end that I want to attach to a 70's T-3 steering head. the lemans 1000 steering stem is too long for that frame. Will a shortneck steering stem fit the lemans 1000 triple clamps ?

I'm not intersted in a gsxr or honda front end, trying to keep it guzzi.

I think the stem is same diameter.  Compare the bearing sizes?

Why are you doing it.  if its for handlebars i have a 40mm SPIII top yoke for handlebars.

I have a rebuilt set of 40mm lemans 1000 forks and triple clamps that I want to use for my project. I cross referenced the bearings and that matches. What I'm worried about is the diameter of the base of the stem which will need to be pressed into the new lower clamp.

Unlikely that Guzzi would change that size for just one model. I'll bet the stem diameter is the same (at least) for all early Tonti frames if not all big twins.

I also believe they are the same from past research on this, but I'd also like to know 100%. Hopefully someone will pitch in with the "ya, I've done it" response.

I swapped a stem out once before and had no issue with pressing the stem into a replacement lower clamp. Do you know the length of stem you need? I may have one in my stash

Jim, I need the eary tonti 170 mm long stem. That would be great if you have one.

Rather than pressing the stem out, I'd rather heat the lower clamp to 250f and the stem will drop out.
