Title: Jacket Armor Disintegration
Post by: kballowe on December 10, 2020, 02:02:47 PM
I set about removing the armor from my Joe Rocket Hemp jacket, in order to give it a good washing.

Imagine my surprise when I opened the velcro enclosures and dumped out the armor.  The jacket is still in good shape.  Even the zipper.  Always hung up inside the house.

Interesting. I have two Joe Rocket jackets that are at least fifteen years old. I think I bought them not too long after I picked up a new V11S in 03'. I washed them both about two years ago and the armor was fine. Still using both on a regular basis.

You can probably get replacements. Besides you don’t need the armor if you don’t fall off😂😂😂😂

Kev,

That's exactly what happened to the armor in my old Joe Rocket mesh jacket last year that started me on my quest for a new 3-4 strain jacket.

Replace with the real stuff from aerostich. Their armor works.

I sent the pic to Joe Rocket.  They said they were out of stock on the amor, but that I could probably just order it from another source.

And, they gave me the part numbers.

It'll be dark outside soon.  Watch for video

I think that is what they call vault armor.  Pretty cheap stuff.  I've had more than a few crumble like that as they aged.  I got two sets of D3O armor that I switch between cool weather and warm weather jackets.

I'm pretty sure that the "armor" in my Aerostich is T-foam.  Like this:

Easy to work with, cut, and glue.  Worth it to get some and make some replacement armor if you like the jacket.  The above link is a bit pricey.  Do an innerweb search for a better price.  And get the blue stuff.

Is it CE certified?  That D3O armor is amazing stuff.  Pliable when worn in the jacket and then transforms during an impact to protect.

Had a fancy pair of Redwing boots which the soles disintegrated in the same way. Very little actual use, just sitting the closet. Probably polyurethane.

Thanks for the heads up on this subject kb, I went out and checked mine in two of my jackets and found they both use Knox armor. Avilable at Revzilla but I'm sure others sell it too.

I also have some of that.  The difference in quality to the D30 armor is huge.
