Title: I’m riding today!
Post by: Ncdan on December 11, 2020, 10:04:15 AM
Here in middle NC or the Piedmont, its going to be 62 degrees. There will not be many more of these beautiful days until spring. So the good news,  I’m going to lunch with my Harley buds. The negative part is I’m going

I highly recommend a ride today and let all us board members report in tonight if we get the opportunity to ride 👍

Ain't it great! Beautiful day here yesterday and got about 50 miles on the T-3. When one gets days like this in December it almost makes me feel like I have successfully stolen a ride.

The Honda looks good, Dan. Have a great ride.

No riding here today.  I'm working in the shop around my bikes and loving the nice weather, even though I should be in the office doing Christmas cards before it's too late.

It was very mild here yesterday. I took the DR out for a ride in the hills and back roads south of here.  All the fields are brown and the leaves are gone. Nice to have a better view of what is happening in the woods. I decided to stretch the bike out a little, and was doing 80 on a straight stretch. I was thinking I was Godzilla on that quaking thumper until a Gold Wing  passed me very quickly and silently.

I took a ride yesterday here in balmy Wisconsin -- 50 degrees! I took my Italjet, so NGC.

Up here in Wisconsin you'll find a lot of receptiveness to global warming!

I spent most of yesterday inside waiting for a phone call from my nurse.  Finally at 2 PM it came and she conducted the business of
my health until 2:45, at which I was then fret go outside and play.  There were 61 little fahrenheights dancing about and if my legs worked I would have joined them.  So I got on the sidecar rig and began to enjoy the weather my own way.  I only had 2 hours of
daylight and I used it.  61 degrees in central Ill Noise is a rare occasion this time of year. Well Wed.and Thursday were a gift from the
Indians and I appreciated them.  A little Indian summer is always welcome.
 Snow is predicted for Saturday.

Hi Dan,                                                                                                   12-11-20

Yup, went on the road today myself.  You gotta bake while the ovens hot (or in this case, not too frigid).  Bike looks good, you look content.  Ride on...

Be well, stay well,

160 miles yesterday to pick up my Descanso mail and two apple pies in Julian.  Great ride except Ramona-to-Santee on 67 -- just aggressively intense (riding behind dump trucks at 70mph -- no thank you).  Normally I ride the fun Ramona-Barona-Santee route but I was worried about pie integrity (they came out great).

Had every good intention of taking the Griso out this morning for a nice ride.  Checked the tire pressure and put it on the trickle charger the night before.  Got up this morning, the batter charger indication showed a fulled charged battery.  It lied!  The engine barely turned over one revolution and that was it. Showed 11 volts...ugh!  Oh well, now I need another battery.  I have a Peter Egan quote on my garage wall for just such occasions, "There's no such thing as too many motorcycles, just too many batteries."  So true.

Hey my fellow guzxiest I’m back and what a great day and ride. The ole 1000 is such a great ole simple bike. However it would have felt just as good, or better, to have been on the stone. Next beautiful day the Stone will be my next ride.
On the way home I stopped at our neighborhood country store and a feller there had a banjo and guitar. Well, I picked up the banjo and guess what, Yep it was after dark30 when I got home👍
Hey guys, I considered EVERYONE here a buddy so please be safe and enjoy life, it’s really short.

That's why the Himalayan and Van Van are so nice.  They are no tall seat dual sport bikes, nor are they heavy cumbersome adventure bikes.  They are just great for exploration of roads you wouldn't dare go down on a street bike you love.

I believe that riding in lower traction situations makes one a better street rider.

Middle Tennessee if loaded with deserted farm roads, gravel roads, water crossings.  In fact I live one mile south of the Trans America Trail.

All water crossings are dangerous after a rain.  Some are concrete, some have rocks laid down, and some are slimy flint rock bottoms.

Nice TWA, brings back some great memories as I spent a lot of time on dirt.
I totally agree about your take on riding on loose footing creates a better rider. When I went into the training program after being chosen for a motor position we had to demonstrate that we could ride on diff unstable ground. The final test was you had to ride over a curb in both directions. For me it was a simple task on that 78 FLH, I just stood up on the floorboards and hopped over it, turned around and back over onto the street. Me and the instructor is the only ones who didn’t drop the beast the first attempt.

Well, at least you've got all your Duc's in a row.

Yes, it was ride-off if you will.  The fellow with the 848 Sportbike wants to get a 939 Supersport.  So he rode my red one and the white "S" model.  The white bike was the winner since it has Ohlins and quick shifter.   The 848 is great on a track but here it felt heavy, steered like a truck, not a lot of go which was perhaps hurt by a slipping clutch when it got on the cam.  In my case, I'm going to try to dial in my suspension to improve the ride a bit, although it's still better than any bike I've ever owned.

For us that is a normal day with 30 degree change from sunrise to mid afternoon.  A 20 degree change in the high temp comes with every front that pushes through.

Damn good looking trio of Ducatis there!

My Ducati 939 SS is the most comfortable motorcycle I own.  The seat is great.  The riding position is similar to the V11 Sport but has more legroom than the V11.  My V11 also very wide & flat aftermarket bars that sometimes get tiring due to long reach.  The bars re perfect on the 939.  I have throttle locks on both bikes.

I've ridden both bikes on long trips.  I rode the V11 to North Carolina to Spineframe Raid, my legs were cramped on the interstate on my way back home and I had to get off and stretch about once an hour. I've got a couple of 400+ mile days and several 300+ mile days on the 939.  Since the range on the 939 is about 150 miles, the fuel light usually glows at 125, I usually get off it every 100 miles or so to stretch and pee anyway.

OTOH, that 848 was a pure sports machine and not very comfortable.  It steered like a truck on the road and I didn't have a chance to know if the engine really kicked.  By contrast, the 939 has a strong midrange and the same horsepower so my bike was a livelier ride as well as more comfy and better street handling.

Like everyone else, Fay and I decided to take advantage of the fine weather (enjoyable, not tolerable or survivable) for a ride.  Today's ride theme (we always have to have a reason) was "Roads within 30 miles of where I've lived for 40 years that we've never been on".   So southwestern Buckingham County, VA it was.

All back roads, there's no other kind here:

(https://photos.smugmug.com/2020-Rough-Creek-ride/i-svr2RtT/0/5df645ff/X4/20201213_150755-X4.jpg) (https://lannisselz.smugmug.com/2020-Rough-Creek-ride/i-svr2RtT/A)

The very avatar of "Hubris", showing a swept-wing jet as the symbol for this grass strip.   Should be a Jenny or a Gypsy Moth:

(https://photos.smugmug.com/2020-Rough-Creek-ride/i-QqKWpqf/0/bb353f07/X4/20201213_150819-X4.jpg) (https://lannisselz.smugmug.com/2020-Rough-Creek-ride/i-QqKWpqf/A)

Countryside that's beautiful to me because I grew up here and am used to it:

(https://photos.smugmug.com/2020-Rough-Creek-ride/i-4g62bHj/0/af999652/X4/20201213_150828-X4.jpg) (https://lannisselz.smugmug.com/2020-Rough-Creek-ride/i-4g62bHj/A)

Here is "Curdsville".  If by any slim chance you've ever read any of George Bagby's humorous lectures, you'll recognize the hometown of "Mozis Addums":

(https://photos.smugmug.com/2020-Rough-Creek-ride/i-wSFt4jG/0/d039925f/X4/20201213_151739-X4.jpg) (https://lannisselz.smugmug.com/2020-Rough-Creek-ride/i-wSFt4jG/A)

Off in the distance you can see what's left of Willis Mountain.   When I were a lad, it was two or three times this tall, but it's made of Kyanite, which they use for furnace refractory material, and they're mining it away.   About another hundred years to go, they say:

(https://photos.smugmug.com/2020-Rough-Creek-ride/i-M3PTCFF/0/c7e34c0e/X4/20201213_152415-X4.jpg) (https://lannisselz.smugmug.com/2020-Rough-Creek-ride/i-M3PTCFF/A)

This is the rock ledge where "Rock Mill" used to stand, back in olden days.

This is me on the Triumph (the Stelvio has been getting all the riding, it was the Triumph's turn) contemplating past history.

Always interesting roads to ride, although that heavy Triumph slipped a couple of times on gravel washes and the ABS chattered in a turn once:

An old place called "Tower Hill" from around 1800, don't think anyone lives there now but it's still being kept up:

And home.   About 190 miles in 3-1/2 hours.   Smoke 'em if you got 'em ....

I was going to say, "I wish I was still young enough to ride bikes like those." But then I looked at your profile and saw where you are two years older than me!  I really need to get in shape.

In the high 50s F in SE Tennessee.  Took the new-to-me V11 out for a short ride.

That looks a lot like the Sequatchie Valley along Hwy. 127?

Yes, but if you read my follow on post, my Ducati is actually more comfortable than my V11 Sport or my EV California.

The very avatar of "Hubris", showing a swept-wing jet as the symbol for this grass strip.   Should be a Jenny or a Gypsy Moth:

Countryside that's beautiful to me because I grew up here and am used to it:

Here is "Curdsville".  If by any slim chance you've ever read any of George Bagby's humorous lectures, you'll recognize the hometown of "Mozis Addums":

Off in the distance you can see what's left of Willis Mountain.   When I were a lad, it was two or three times this tall, but it's made of Kyanite, which they use for furnace refractory material, and they're mining it away.   About another hundred years to go, they say:

This is the rock ledge where "Rock Mill" used to stand, back in olden days.

This is me on the Triumph (the Stelvio has been getting all the riding, it was the Triumph's turn) contemplating past history.

You have an eye for quality and patina, my man!

My Mom bought me that jacket (a Brooks) for my 19th birthday back in 1973.

Here's Fay and I on my first BSA when we were 20; same jacket.

I outgrew it for 43 years and it drifted between my sons until THEY outgrew it, then this year I got it back.

Probably go to my grandson someday ....!
