Title: Nor’easter
Post by: sdcr on December 15, 2020, 06:21:36 PM
Sometime on Wednesday, we expect to get the first really large snowstorm in the Philly area. We haven’t had one like this in about two years. Weather folks say it may start as an ice storm just south of here in Virginia and the mountains of North Carolina.

Expecting about a foot of snow where I live, and possibly 2 feet, just a few miles west.

It's been snowing here since Sunday (Okla).  Coming from SW, the snow blowing from the east.  Maybe 4 in on the ground,  cold too.

Heck, it was warming in Buffalo than here.

Yup, the inlaws (just west of Philly) said they're supposed to get 18".  Looks like the storm will just barely miss us here in SC.  We're expecting a little ice & some slippery spots by morning but no measurable snow here this time.

The forecast keeps changing but western NJ is slated for up to 2' before it's done Thursday morning. Snowblower and generator are gassed up and ready to go which means we'll get 3" and rain.

Where are you LowRyter?

I left Rochester NY in 1987.  Don't miss it a bit!

I shot for the moon and made a wager with my uncle back home in York, PA that they’ll just get 6” (akin to the infamous Penn State forecast of 199?, when forecasters from the college told everyone we were in for a very big storm, and it... did nothing). He’s betting on 10”. Here in Dover, NH, we’ll certainly get at least those two amounts combined. And the Dirty Goose will be freezing its taillight, huddled inside its bike cover at my front steps.

Here in Connecticut we hoard milk and bread based on a blizzard 30-40 years ago that shut down the state for a week or two

Forecast 11-17” thru thurs noon, blowing hard but not quite blizzard

When the snow total rumors start, i like to keep upping the ante

First you repeat the actual forecast

Then at work you just keep mentioning a higher snow total..

“I just heard 10-12”..

“Forecast says 12-15””...

“Weather.com predicts 15-20”...

“New forecast says 20-26””...

30-42”..

Gets everyone in a frenzy, great fun

End of the day w a scared straight face your talking 8-10 FEET

JJ,

I guess the closest you get to a blowing snow storm, is when one of those hellacious sand storms kicks up. At least the snow eventually melts

No sand / dust storms up here.  That would be the Phoenix area. If we want to see snow, we just drive one hour north to Flagstaff....

Sedona does get a "dusting" of snow every, however....It's nice...no shoveling, just enough to make it feel like winter.  When the sun comes up, it melts in a few days...These photos are from January 2019...

Moved the snowblower to the front of the garage. Made sure it would start, it's a mid 80's Arian's, bought some gas. Wait for the fun to begin. I actually like using the snowblower. Best invention to mankind for those of us who have to deal with snow.

When I was an apprentice there was a gay fellow that worked for the same company I did. His last name was snow. You learned quickly to not say anything about blowing snow, snow blowers, snow balls, stuck in a snow drift or anything with snow in it around a job trailer with a bunch of Fitters in it.

Was that the blizzard of '78?  I remember that one.

I always remember that 78 storm. The milling machine I was working on looked out over that parking lot my Little 74 Subaru DL was parked and I watched it disappear under the snow. That storm convinced me of FWD in the snow, I had a set of bi ply snow tires on front and passed all the big American cars that where stuck, and helped push a few get going. I sometime think that car was better in the snow then my AWD Forester well that is till I but snow's on it.

You all be careful down there... Oddly enough, we here in the Northeast, farther than Boston are more used to this type of event and prepared for it however, not getting hit badly with this storm.

Best,
Rob

About 6 inches so far, supposed to turn to sleet overnight, then back to snow.

Pa. declared  a state of emergency earlier today, so all the bread and milk is gone at the supermarket.

It snowed and I rode.  Probably because In my shape I could fold up the cards and go at any time, and I want to ride as often as I can.  My brother caught - a week or so ago and went to the hospital with pneumonia.  Now since the last 3 or 4 days he has been in the intensive care ward.  So long as I can, I will ride, maybe not far but it's a ride just the same.  I have to use two canes to make it out to the garage but once I am on the rig I still ride it well.  When I get to a destination I unload the wheel chair and go inside to warm up.

I never could figure out why there is the mad rush to the store when a storm is predicted. All you have to do is stock up on powdered and canned milk. Learn how to make hot water biscuits etc

Oh well, when you have an 8 grade education from a one room country school lots of things escape me.

Running to the store to get more saffron, abalone and Kobe beef.

Nice. Probably much the same as mine under different tin. Cub didn’t change frames and transaxles much in their machines. I’m talking about real Cubs here, not the Home Repo ones. Mines a ‘01 2185, hydrostatic, 18hp ohv V-twin Kohler. Plenty of balls to run the blower and the mower. It sounds kinda like Mrs larrys’ long gone V50 II...
We got an honest foot o’ snow today. Lucky we had a couple of cold days before to freeze my gravel driveway. Blowers don’t throw gravel as well as they throw snow...

Ok, I lied...  We got hammered.  An honest seventeen (17) inches...!   Which is a heck of a lot less than many got...

The Cardinal wind chime that I use to show friends from away on fb how much snow we get every storm...  I hangs just off the deck by about six inches to the bottom of the bird.

Like the bonehead that I am, I did not shoot one last mage when I went out to move the snow.  It was dark anyway.

The weather people seemed to really be challenged calling this one, especially near southeast Pa., NJ and Delaware. As late as Wednesday, Philly were forecast 3” to up to 12”. Just east of me, by less than 10 miles, the call was 1”-3”, or just rain. Allentown, and anything west or north, it was 12” up to 36”.
