Those are kind of slow and heavy, but solid. Kind of like a Guzzi. ;)
The British nickname for that bike is the "maggot". They are a favorite of dispatch riders, because they last forever, and need little care.

This bike was for sale here two summers ago for $3500 at a used car lot. It was rough but running.

My ownership of both a ‘78 Standard and ‘80 Deluxe (had both at the same time) lasted less than a year. For my generation and younger, I can see why folks want to modify them beyond the ‘let’s cafe everything’ trend. Those bikes got a big ol’ b’dunkadunk sticking up in the air like a female baboon during mating season that just doesn’t fly with contemporary motorcycle aesthetics. I would’ve kept mine had I been in a better financial situation and the garage I’d taken them to would’ve actually worked on them for the 3 months they had them. Still one of the prettiest motors in my eye.

The 1980's Honda CX-500 is indeed a "Japanese Guzzi"...except liquid-cooled... :wink: :thumb:

I’ve had two of the 500 and one 650 of the Honda silver wing twins. I don’t know how much the motors actually have in common with the MG motors but the little Honda twins are bullet proof power house motors for their displacement.

I had a CX500 the first year they came out. Really liked it but I had chronic coolant leak problems. As it cooled down it always dribbled a little. Once up to temperature it was fine, though.

The CX500 was another Honda demonstration they could build "impossible motors." In 1978 everyone thought a production pushrod motorcycle that comfortably ran at 9,000 rpm was impossible. And once again Honda proved them wrong.

You’re definitely right about that Bert. At 70mph the little 500 was tacking 6400 rpm’s and it could go that all day at 55 MPG on cheap grade fuel. When the one year wonder 1983 GL650I came out it was much more tour capable. That motor was completely redesigned from its 500cc predecessor. Too bad it was discontinued after that one year. I’d buy a new one today if Mr Honda would offer one 👍

Not quite, 80 degree v-twin with the head screwed on crooked. First models had cam chain issues. My bothers 1980 model was pretty solid though. Harley took a look at the CX-500 to try to figure out how a push rod twin could survive on a dyno at 11,000 for about forever. :cool:
