Title: Got my just desserts.
Post by: Huzo on January 01, 2021, 05:07:20 AM
I was congratulating myself on the fabulous range achieveable on the V85.
But I took this shot on the side of the highway after running out of fuel 5 km short of the servo.

I had not set out to see if I could get to 500 k and had intended to stop at a known servo at Ouyen, but the GPS asked me to turn 5 k short and I thought I’d get fuel at Manangatang
Upon reaching the place, I was greeted with the sight of a lone bowser covered with spider webs and leaning precariously from what was probably a collision with a B&S ute at some point last century.
Scrawled on the bowser (with every second letter backwards) was the incalculably valuable information that..
“We are closed today, but will probably be open tomorrow...!”
Suitably armed with this news, I bravely headed off with my rapidly dwindling fuel reserves disappearing through the injectors as I lined up into the teeth of a 25 kt headwind.
My mind was imagining the V85 gorging fuel at a rate similar to Concorde on full climb and the inevitable happened....
Silence....
Jeez I’d have gone red if any of my WG detractors had passed by on their 8V gas guzzlers.
I know what I would have said if I was them, after all my bragging.
The shot is legit, Waikerie to Tooleybuc (almost), via Ouyen.
But I really should have put some in... :embarrassed:
An old couple who run a shelter for homeless children, stopped in a Nissan Navara and scarpered into town to procure the necessary petroleum distillate. They were adamant that I should not reimburse them, but excepted my offer to make a donation to their shelter.
They won’t be disappointed.
Hey..! But on a different topic, looked what I bumped into at a set of traffic lights in Swan Hill.

He’s had his for two weeks.
ps..
The spelling mistake was intentional....

Ha, what you will do in the interest of science.
I bet you didn't wait that long before someone came along to give you a lift.

A worthwhile experiment I would say.  I am glad you weren't stranded for very long.

Actually, meeting the couple in the Nissan ended up being a highlight.

Never tempt the Goddess Nemesis.  She frowns upon the effort.

On the plus side, you have proven that removing some black from your bike work out well.

Less black, more silver in 2021.

I didn’t bother to check, because by then the people who helped me had left with the empty tin and I didn’t know if it was 4 or 5 litres.
To tell the truth, I was so glad to have the tank full again, I didn’t even bother to calculate it.
Interestingly, the fuel gauge stopped working for the first half of the replenished tank. The display stayed visible, but the gauge registered zero and the fuel light stayed on.
It’s ok now, I wonder if the float fouled on the inside of the tank at that extremely low level. I have altered the bend in the float arm previously to make the dashboard reading more accurate.
Although I have been extremely low on a few occasions, I have not run the tank dry since my mod and hope not to again..

I’m seriously considering dropping the engine and soda blasting the black off it too.

and on the plus side, if you now have the opportunity to help someone who helps homeless children...good for your karma levels.

No worries R.
I have their permission to pass on their Facebook address..(or whatever you call it), it’s.....
Zac’s Place Inc Australia
I was slightly awry in my description of what they are about. They have established three accomodation centres for people in need who find themselves without viable options..
Still the same sentiment, but they deserve the respect of having their cause accurately represented.
