Title: New Guzzi Owner
Post by: andyals on January 09, 2021, 04:32:16 PM
Hello
I'm new here and new to Moto Guzzi
I've been riding for 40 years, the last 20 of which have been exclusively BMW twins.
I currently have an R NineT.
I've always liked Guzzi's and have been wanting to try the cruiser thing for a while so have just acquired a tidy California 1100 with 20,000 miles.
I'm nervous.
This is new territory for me.
Anyway wanted to say Hi.

Welcome aboard!
It’s a wild ride but nothing to be nervous about.
Good peeps on here with all kinds of help and an occasional chuckler, er uh funny.
Anyway, this forum is very helpful so don’t be shy with questions.

Welcome aboard! In case you didn't know, you need to rev that bitch up a little. I never go to 5th on my Cal-Vin until around 80mph.

Ditto!
If not for the lovely Griso I think I'd be a R9T owner....

Hope you'll enjoy the Cali.
Had one myself, but it was nit the right bike for me.

Why is the “i” in GRiSO, lower case ?
I know there’ll be a reason and I’m not suggesting it’s wrong, most informed guys use it..
I simply don’t know.

IDK either.   Griso was a villainous “Bravo”, the thugs of Arch Villian Don Rodrido in Allesandro Manzoni’s novel “I promissi sposi”.  The betrothed.    An outstanding classic read.  He does kill Rodrigo so he redeems himself somewhat.

ummm...maybe not.

Anyway welcome to the madness and enjoy!!!

Just be careful of the one called Dusty...you will figure out why!!!

Glad to have you with us, andyals!.  Several of us have or have had BMW's so no worries there.  The R nineT caught my eye too, esp that Anniversary Blue.  How about a picture of your bikes, when you get a chance.

And regarding BMW ownership - He that is without sin among you, let him first cast a stone

I currently own a BMW and like it.

Welcome to the board!
I had a CalVin for a couple years and they are great bikes. If you ride it the same way you ride your beemer, hopefully utilizing all five gears as intended, you’ll get around 50 mpg with great Preformance if it’s mapped right and there are great map out there.  I have one that was mapped over time for my Calvin until it was perfect and you would be welcome to try it.

Not to worry, guy. Therapists are somewhat affordable. I always liked the R90's from yesteryear the most. Took a long road trip with an old man who rode one. I remember vividly the quality of the welding in particular, & the paint was impressive. Any speed, all day long. I never got one because the Guzzi California I rode was a sluttier mistress, and I don't think she would have tolerated any sharing. :thewife:

Nice bike! Keep the revs at 4K and above. It’ll pull at lower revs but it’s lugging and hammers the drive line even though it doesn’t seem like it. Third gear is the one I use the most. Welcome!

With 20,000 miles it's probably already been addressed but you should know about the internal fuel pump and filter. The original filter tended to swell and the hoses inside tank would come off the pump and leave you on the side of road with no fuel delivery.
Is the key in gas cap stiff to turn? There's a fix for that too.
Keep the driveline splines greased.

A air head beemer owner on a Guzzi eh
The transition will be fairly painless
Differences
1 You no longer need a special tool to go to the toilet
2 The exhaust note, no it not amplified flatulence
3 That annoying high speed weave, is no longer there
4 Fuel range, its a thing, enjoy.
5 Cool tank badge
6 Maintenance is straight forward and fairly simple
The Cali is a surprise to most, a cruiser that goes, stops and handles, annoys the heck out of the HD tee shirt owners society.
Enjoy
And welcome to the ragged fringe of polite society.

It's on the tank that way, though i've no clue why.

Still trying to find out why they spell it Moto-Gurzi.

They don't even kick you off for asking stupid questions, over and over again.  I know.

Every time I get on my Stelvio or Quota I get a smile on my face.  Ride safely.

I had an 04 EV with the same color scheme without the ox blood seat color and with the black hard bags, an EV touring.
I really liked the Hydro motor!

Nice bikes and welcome!

I was looking hard at the 9RT when I bought my GRiSO.... I only spell it that way because on the Griso Ghetto Forum, the word is automatically changed that way.... ;-) Really like the racer version.  I briefly had a similar RT1100 back in the day (in between a C-10 Concours and an FJR) Wasn't my cup of tea 20 years ago....

As others have said, Guzzi's like (love?) to rev. It's not a harley. I'm not very familiar with that model Guzzi in particular, but many here have them and love them. Couldn't connect to the few I have ridden. Great info here, and a great community as well.

Looks like an 80th Anniversary model with the Poltrona Frau leather:

http://www.motoguzzicalifornia.com/2010/04/ev80/

Being a 2002 model, it may still have the external fuel pump, so the fuel line issue may not apply.  There should be a number stamped on the handlebar mount that shows its build sequence.

Yes I was wondering about the number on the top yoke which is 289.
That's great news.
The dealer didn't advertise it as an anniversary edition but they're
Not a Guzzi agent so likely didn't realise themselves.
Well that's made me feel even better about my purchase.
I'm actually not that keen on the panniers and have just removed them
and was planning to remove the mounting hardware tomorrow.
I feel more inclined to leave it as is now I know this.

I'd say that the 9T is a really good bike.

I've been very happy in my four years with it.

The Racer riding position is like sitting on an ironing board holding onto a broomstick but I kind of like that.

It's an authentic riding experience.
