At the WSPD we rode year around and the only time we were allowed to have the option not to ride was when the temperature was below 32 degrees F. The reason for that is obvious, water freezes and the city didn’t want the civil liability of a crash. The 82-82 Honda CB900C was our choice of patrol bike as we had just ended a 60 year affair with HD.
The Honda was equipped with Vetter Windjammers with leg lowers. The ole windjammer was a work horse and tough as nails. We chose them over hondaline because they were much more sturdy and tough. The Aerodynamic on the jammer was great. The only air and water that got to us was from the underside, around the forks.
One of the guys designed a vinyl insert to go down into the front end of the fairing and Velcro in. We had a local upholstery shop to

make us one from the pattern we furnish. After getting it and putting it in we realize we had omitted the majority of the unwanted air, thus putting the rider in a complete pocket of still air, thus making the cold weather riding much more tolerable.
I was able to come up with the pattern and had a local upholstery shop to make me one. After putting it in the Vetter on my CB1000C I remember just how much that combination kept the cold wind and elements off a rider.
If anyone here may have a Vetter and interested in one of these wind blockers PM me and I’ll see about getting you one for a fare price.

Great pictures and story. My only experience with a Windjammer was prying it off my G5 and hauling it to the dump. I felt a little guilty.

Yeah, nobody seems to want them. I had one that I took off an Eldorado for a guy. I think I got $50 pus shipping for it on fleabay. Cost $60 to ship it...

Yea I know they are not popular these days as their time has come and gone. However there are maybe still a few of us old guys who are comfortable with living in the past and holds on to the things we know from experience that works well.

I've never had a Vetter fairing...in 1982 or 3 my first Guzzi (a G5) came with a Shoei, I think it was? Only- the mounts were flimsy, so they eventually developed stress cracks and the whole thing came off on Florida highway.

I loved my Yamaha factory "Windjammer" style fairing that came on my XS750. It was ABS plastic so not as durable as I had hoped. Loved not being pelted by beach sand or love bugs while riding.

I bought two bike that also included Windjammers. The only person I found that would take them was the garbageman. Even then they had to be cut up small enough to fit in the green dumpster so he couldn't see them.
While there may be a few folks that want them we've never crossed paths.

I had a Windjammer with lowers on my KZ900 back in the day, at the time I thought it wasn't bad looking, now I cringe thinking about it,lol. But it was very high quality and extremely effective.
The factory Yamaha fairing on my XS1100 was a bit nicer looking (at least the same color) but no where near the same quality, developed cracks around the support frame.

I don't understand the Windjammer dissing that followed. They are a quality product and hardly the fashion equivalent of bell bottom pants and disco music. What's the beef about them?
I didn't see the lowers mentioned above in the photo, but even Calis came with lowers and they seem like a good idea for cold weather. The insert for a Windjammer seems like a good idea too.

The one problem I had in rain was that water collected along the inside edge of the fairing and blew back on my knees and ran down into the engineering boots I wore for riding; a long ride in rain would fill them up.

I have a nice Windjammer V that I bought from a fellow who had had it on a Convert and thought the mounts would fit my Cali, but unfortunately they do not so I may fit it to my Triumph America instead. It came with the radio/speakers option, but that is quite heavy so I think the tunes will have to stay home.

In 1978, I bought a 1978 BMW R100/7 which I still have....it was stolen once (robbers went to jail), nearly stolen a second time but I captured the bike back and still have it....only brand new bike I have bought over the years. Anyway, it came from the US importer with a Luftmeister fairing and bags....the next year they came with the factory fairing. The Luftmeisters were color matched, pinstriped etc to match the bike. I have always liked it and it is very similar to the Windjammer and very effective. BTW, Dan, you could buy an insert from Luftmeister which looked very much like the one you designed....you are right....they were very effective.

I had an Avon fairing on my R75/5 that I moved to the R90. It took a whole day to install. Forks and exhaust had to come off. Head light and turn signals had to come off and be installed on the fairing with an add on harness. To top it off the hardware was a mixture of metric and Whitworth. It was a great fairing. The only part of me that would get wet in a Colorado shower was the top of my thighs. I took it off when I moved to California, just too hot. It was a good looking fairing.

The picture posted was made in the summer months so the lowers were removed. It only took a few minutes to install the lowers and the Vinyl inserts, carried in the tail trunk, were added as the temps varied. Here’s a picture of how the bikes looked full dressed but the faring and lowers would have been all white. This is my 83 CB1000C dressed in all Vetter equipment.

Have you been to his web site? Lots of interesting history there. Too bad Craig does not sell replacement windshields anymore; the company that does is quite pricey. I may try my hand at making my own if/when I get the old Yamaha 305 out of the barn again.

Phil, check the web site as there are several companies that offers a standard or tall replacement for around the price as any other windshield, 120-150.00 bucks

OK, I'll look again. That's about the price I remembered from several years ago, but I thought when I looked for S1000 replacements they were more in the $350 range. The Vetter web site has this notice, "Reluctantly, we inform you that we will no longer be offering replacement windshields in our home country. For US windshields, check out Chrome World." and Just now I could not get the link to Chrome World to come up.

I've been hunting for a Windjammer for my Police Eldorado for years. Word on the street is I need one with "mouse ears" or cut outs to clear the engine guards.

Great price for a Windjammer in case something happen to mine, but the one I need is for an S1000 Fairing. It is just slightly curved across the bottom. Maybe one of these could be trimmed to fit if they are wide enough.

Ok, I got ya Phil, you were talking about the S1000 model. I have never even seen the S1000 model but I really like the concept. Sorry, I thought you were talking about the basic windjammers. Sorry I mis spoke.

No Problem - still good information. i see some generic ones on eBay 16" and 17" wide for $40 that might be made to fit. I'll have to measure the width of the S1000. When I was in college I worked in a hospital machine shop where we built research equipment and had a lot of plexiglas and I made one for it there. Unfortunately that one was the victim of catching a little air off the end of a raised back road iron bridge when I came down in a crown of gravel and washed out. Cost me a broken shoulder and a week in the hospital too.

I must admit I had never saw a Vetter S1000 fairing before your post and picture. That design looks like it might have been one of the most effective fairings ever designed. I’d love to have one mounted on my Stone, color matched.

Most riders that have utilized the Vetter (windjammer) acknowledge they are the most effective wind and elements protection they have ever ridden behind. It always helps to have owned one and actually have used it as we have, to appreciate the fairings quality and effectiveness 👍

Put some Convert Crash guards on your Cali and those mounts should work. I have Convert crash guards on 01 California EV. I've also got the Jammer and the mounts, so someday I hope to have it on the EV.
So the Convert crash bars will just bolt onto a Cali? That would be a simple solution if so.

No rad the insert works the same with or without the lowers attached to the fairing.
Here’s a couple pictures that may shed some light on his it works. Over the years we used them in the service bikes and logged tens of thousands of miles, We never had one to slip out or even need any further attention after they were installed for the season.

Those KZ1000 were totally work horses. They were rough around the edges, buzzy and stiff but unstoppable!
They were a cut above the Honda’s but the ole CB900C did good for what they were.
